  • Every serious hiker should have something like the Garmin InReach Mini 2

If you’re like me, you love the outdoors. I spend the bulk of my weekends out hiking and backpacking. With my recent move to the Bay Area, I’m having a blast exploring all new trails with very different terrains when compared to my former location on the East Coast. A tech product that’s been helping me get acclimated to these new spots is the Garmin InReach Mini 2, which has become indispensable in my gear bag.

I first learned about the InReach Mini 2 at a Garmin-sponsored event earlier this year. I was impressed with it but thought it kind of took the fun out of hiking. Half the appeal of hiking is to “unplug,” as it were, and the InReach system keeps you connected no matter where you are.

Google’s new Pixel ecosystem should look to Samsung for inspiration

From taking an ECG reading to measuring your blood pressure, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup can do a lot more than most other Wear OS devices. But there’s a big catch — you can’t use these features without a Samsung smartphone. This isn’t just a one-off; it’s the same story everywhere you look in Samsung’s ecosystem.

Take Samsung’s Buds, for instance. Features like 360 Audio and the proprietary Scalable audio codec are exclusive to Samsung smartphones. The list extends to software too — Samsung Pay no longer works on third-party Android smartphones, and you can’t track down a SmartTag on non-Galaxy devices either.

Too many of you sleep with your phone, and it’s bad for your health

    0
Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus back on bed face down

According to the results of our recent poll, more than half of you sleep with your phone in bed with you at least some of the time. Of those who responded “No,” some still cited that they leave their phone on a nightstand nearby or beside the bed. Well, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but neither case is good for your health. Whether you are an adult or an adolescent, there’s plenty of research to support not having your phone anywhere near your bed.

Now, I know I’m not your mom. I can’t tell you what to do with your life, nor would I want to. But I can bring some peer-reviewed research to your attention which you will then have to consider and decide what to do with. If you are experiencing difficulties falling asleep, have insomnia, or can’t stay awake during the day, solid data suggests your phone may be the reason why.

Spooky season has arrived, and with it comes a new batch of new Halloween streaming shows and movies to watch. While horror films and series are released at all times of the year, it seems like the Halloween time period is becoming a more popular place to launch this kind of new content. This year we have, among other things, a sequel to a beloved family-friendly Halloween classic, along with a revival of a popular horror film franchise and a new take on a classic Anne Rice novel. Even the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting into the season with an all-new horror special.

I rode an electric bike to work, and here’s what I learned

    0
Adam standing with XP 2.0 electric bike under trees
Credit: Adam Birney / Android Authority

After having a blast riding electric scooters all summer, I wanted to try my hand at riding an electric bike. Not only are e-bikes more sturdy and noticeable for riding in between traffic, but they can also carry more cargo. While I still have fun riding electric scooters, they are a leisurely activity that doesn’t require much physical effort. I figured an e-bike would bring a healthy balance to my riding with the benefit of exercise and rest when needed. Was it all it was cracked up to be? Here’s what I learned from riding an electric bike.

    Getting to know an e-bike

I tested the Lectric XP 2.0, featured in our buyer’s guide as the go-to starter electric bike. The e-bike arrived fully assembled out of the box; all I needed to do was inflate the tires and wait for the battery to charge fully. On first impression, it’s a chunky machine, bigger than my usual bicycle, but it is foldable to help save space when storing. Still, the 64lbs of steel are a bit heavy to haul up a flight of stairs.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

    0

Welcome to the 452nd edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

    • We wished Firefox a happy birthday this week. The famous browser turned 20 years old on September 23rd. Hit the link to check out what we had to say about it.
    • We also rounded up the best new Android apps and games from the last month. Loyal subscribers and readers already know about all of these since we covered them, but you can hit the links to check those out as well.
    • Google Search is adding a new Forums & Discussions feature in the near future. The new function will troll sites like Reddit or official product forums for answers to questions you search for. Google announced the change after it learned that a lot of people just tack on the word “Reddit” to Google Searches to avoid websites and go straight to forums instead.
    • Intel is working on a new app for Android and Windows PCs. The app would work similarly to Microsoft’s Your Phone app, where you can connect your Android and Windows devices together. It’s expected to launch with the 12th Gen Intel systems in 2023.
    • Google quietly expanded Game Dashboard to more devices this week. It’s only for a few extra Pixel devices, but it is a step forward. We believe the Game Dashboard is coming to non-Google devices sometime in the future, but for now, it’s nice to see it rolling out to more phones.
    • Google Wallet was throwing some errors this last week. The app told folks that their phone was running uncertified software. That’s usually nomenclature for when an app thinks your phone is rooted. It’s almost certainly Google’s safety systems overreacting, and the issue should be fixed soon if it hasn’t been already.

Forget Dynamic Island, Android should pinch iOS 16’s Focus features

    Robert Triggs

Move over Dynamic Island, there’s a way more useful feature tucked away in Apple’s latest iPhone that should be grabbing the headlines. I’m talking about Focus and its new customizable lock and home screen options. After spending a week with the iPhone 14, I’m convinced this is the feature Android should aim to emulate instead. And the sooner the better.

For a little background, Focus was introduced with iOS 15, allowing you to choose when to receive alerts and notifications, from whom, and from which apps, depending on the chosen Focus profile. Of course, Android phones have granular Do Not Disturb options too, with app, call, and contact exceptions, along with focus options embedded in Digital Wellbeing. However, Focus’ multiple profiles are right at your fingertips and more customizable, allowing you to manage personal time, work, workouts, sleep, or whatever else is currently occupying your mind’s eye.

Yesterday, Google sent a shockwave through the gaming world by announcing the Google Stadia shutdown. The cloud gaming company — which is only three years old — will terminate its service on January 18, 2023.

Apparently, Google made this decision very quickly. Industry reports suggest Google didn’t alert Stadia employees until minutes before the public announcement. To make matters worse, we’ve heard tell that Google didn’t at all notify third-party developers working on future Stadia titles. Those folks found out at the same time we all did.

    • Another source has now claimed that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will have a 200MP camera.
    • This comes after two sources made the claim earlier this year.

We got a first apparent look at the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra earlier this week thanks to leaked renders, but we’ve also seen plenty of leaks related to the phone’s specs. One claim that’s popped up a couple of times is that the Ultra model will have a 200MP camera, and another source has now made this assertion.

Dutch outlet Galaxy Club has now claimed that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will indeed have a 200MP main camera, citing “information that has reached us.” It didn’t have any info on the specific sensor used, though.

    • Intel is working on an app that will allow Android and iOS users to connect their phones to Windows PCs.
    • The app will allow your PC to do everything from making calls to receiving notifications.
    • Intel expects the app to launch on 12th Gen Evo systems from Acer, HP, and Lenovo PCs this holiday season and will expand to 13th Gen Mobile processors and Evo designs in 2023.

Have you ever wished that your computer and phone could work seamlessly together? There are some solutions out there like Microsoft’s Phone Link, but they are severely limited. Intel is currently working on a more comprehensive solution that will work whether you have an Android or iOS phone.

After purchasing the company behind Screenovate and Dell Mobile Connect, Intel has reworked and optimized the software to create what the company calls Intel Unison. According to Windows Central, Intel Unison connects with your handset and allows you to do just about anything on your computer that you can do on your phone. This means you have the ability to make calls, send texts, transfer files, receive notifications, and more all from your PC.

    • It appears Samsung is going for a more minimalist look in 2023.

Earlier today, we got our first look at what Samsung’s design ethos could look like in 2023. The source of that insight was some renders of the Galaxy S23 Plus shared by Steve Hemmerstoffer.

Now, from that same source (via Digit.in), we have our first look at what the regular Samsung Galaxy S23 could look like. As one would expect, the Galaxy S23 looks a lot like the Galaxy S23 Plus but is just smaller overall.
