Who needs iMessage? Google brings a ton of upgrades to Messages on Android.

    • Google is rolling out a whole slew of updates for its Google Messages app.
    • The ability to reply to specific messages in a chain, SMS reactions, and message reminders are just some of the highlights.
    • All users will see these updates, but they will roll out incrementally over the coming weeks.

Google has been on a tear recently with attacks on Apple’s iMessage. The company is pointing out how incompatibilities between iMessage and rich-content services (RCS) messaging make life difficult for everyone, Android and iPhone users alike. However, the company hasn’t just been shaming Apple — it’s also actively making its own messaging app better.

Today, Google announced a slew of updates for the Google Messages app. There are a few headlining features and then some smaller ones. Combined, though, there are nine new additions to the toolbox, many of which are genuinely useful.

    • A tipster says Motorola plans to launch two Razr phones in 2023.
    • We don’t know if both phones would be clamshells or if Motorola is planning to launch a Galaxy Z Fold-style device.

It’s been a minute since Motorola launched the 2022 Razr in China. The powerful phone still hasn’t made it to the global market, but word has it that it might be stepping out of the orient pretty soon. While Motorola may have lost this year’s foldable race to Samsung by simply limiting the availability of the new Razr, it looks like the company may have plans to double down on foldables next year.

    • Google has announced Android 13 Go Edition for low-end smartphones.
    • The update brings Material You, notification permissions, and the Discover screen.
    • This Android Go update requires 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.

Google first launched Android Go back in 2017, being a lighter, less resource-intensive version of Android for low-end smartphones. The platform has been updated over the years in line with the mainline version of Android, and Google has now announced Android 13 Go Edition.

As the name implies, Android 13 Go Edition brings a number of Android 13 features to the table. For one, we’ve got the Material You design language for the first time, complete with the ability to extract colors from a wallpaper to use as your phone’s system colors. In saying so, users are limited to four color schemes to choose from versus 16 in Android 13.

    • Sony has been attempting to get regulators to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

As Microsoft tries its best to convince regulators to let its acquisition of Activision Blizzard go through, the company quietly revealed that it’s in the process of building an Xbox mobile gaming store.

At the beginning of this year, Microsoft announced its intention of acquiring Activision Blizzard. Since then, regulators from around the world have been looking into the $68.7 billion deal. Although some of those regulators have already given their approval for the acquisition, the deal has caught on a snag with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

When a white-collar criminal angers the wrong people, he moves his family to the Ozarks to start fresh, while not exactly leaving his criminal past behind. Fossil smartwatches start getting Wear OS 3 update with some major omissions

    0

Fossil Gen 6 app drawer on table

Fossil is now rolling out the Wear OS 3 update for its Gen 6 smartwatches. The company announced the transition to the newer Wear OS platform in a long-winded Reddit post, where it lists the benefits and challenges of the new software.

Unlike the Pixel Watch, which comes with Wear OS 3.5, Fossil is equipping its Gen 6 smartwatches with Wear OS 3.2. The company says that is the latest version available to it, like any other brand that has Qualcomm Wear 4100/4100 Plus wearables.

Fossil further explained that Wear OS is also built on versions of Android and that Wear OS 3 takes its devices from Android 9 to Android 11.

Regardless of the older version, Fossil’s Gen 6 watches will gain Google’s latest Wear Health Services and companion app components. The smartwatches will see a new user interface with improved readability and elements from Google’s Material You design. Users will also have access to more third-party Wear OS apps available via the Google Play Store.

Another bit of good news is that Fossil’s Wear OS smartwatches will now work with its own app. Previously, users had no option but to use Google’s app.

    What’s missing?

While all the above upgrades are great, Fossil’s Wear OS 3 software has a few glaring omissions. For one, you won’t have access to Google Assistant. The company says Google has not made it available to any Qualcomm 4100-based watches. In the meantime, Fossil has collaborated with Amazon to bring Alexa to its Wear OS watches.

Secondly, there’s no Google Fit — an app that came preloaded onto all Wear OS 2 smartwatches. According to Fossil, the app hasn’t been updated to support the latest Wear Health Services. Meanwhile, the smartwatches will continue supporting Google Fit data syncing via Fossil’s phone app.

The Fitbit app remains a Pixel Watch exclusive for now. Fossil writes it is eager to see the app come to its watches in the future, but for now, the only option users have is to use the company’s own Wellness app or some other third-party app.

Lastly, iOS users won’t be able to use Google Wallet at launch. They also don’t get support for Google Maps.

If you own a Fossil Gen 6 smartwatch and want to update to the latest Wear OS 3 software, you can go into your watch settings and check for system updates that started rolling out on October 17.

Google’s Pixel 7 series is powered by the Tensor G2 processor, and it doesn’t seem like a massive upgrade over the original Tensor chipset when looking at the CPU and GPU.

We compared the Tensor G2 to its predecessor and rival chipsets in a benchmark article last week, but also asked readers whether Google nailed the new processor. Here’s how you answered this question.

    • The Android TV OS 12 update brings privacy tweaks and more.

Google launched the Chromecast with Google TV HD earlier this year, offering Android TV OS 12 out of the box. Owners of the 4K Chromecast with Google TV were still stuck on Android TV OS 10, though. Fortunately, that’s changing now.

    • Apple is reportedly following in the Pixel Tablet’s footsteps with a dock for the iPad.
    • This accessory would transform the iPad into a smart home hub of sorts.

Google shed more light on the Pixel Tablet earlier this month, confirming that its 2023 tablet can effectively turn into a smart display with the aid of a dock. Now, it turns out that Apple could copy this approach for future iPads.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning a similar concept for iPads next year, allowing users to turn the tablet into a smart hub and smart speaker. This would be accomplished via a dock that Apple could sell separately.

Samsung created the Galaxy Tab A series to offer buyers a cheaper alternative to their higher-end devices. Find out if it’s the tablet for you in Android Authority‘s Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite review.

Tested: Has Apple shrugged off its reputation for poor battery life?

Apple has often ridden a fine line balancing powerhouse and “optimal” specs for years now, and nowhere has it been more apparent than in battery sizes. However, as you can guess, high-end computing and small battery sizes do not correlate to excellent battery life, and the iPhone has cultivated a bit of a reputation for delivering sub-par longevity.

Macro photography has quickly become a hot addition for smartphone manufacturers looking to spice up their camera credentials on budget and mid-range options. A dedicated macro lens is an easy and cheap way to bump up the number of cameras on the spec sheet, it adds an extra imaging dimension to camera-focused smartphones, and it makes for a good marketing talking point.

Lite apps should be available everywhere and to everyone

Facebook Messenger Lite on phone stock photo 1
    Opinion post by
    Joe Hindy

“Lite” apps have been available for years now, but they took off with Android Go — an initiative to make cheaper, low-end phones for people in low-income countries. Part of the initiative was the development of lightweight apps that work well on phones with low RAM and low CPU power. It could’ve been a cut-and-dry benefit for everybody with an Android phone. Unfortunately, developers decided to be evasive about it.

Nowadays, many lite apps are only available in select countries or regions. More only work on midrange or low-end devices. There isn’t a lot of rhyme or reason to it, especially when the option to let everyone use an app is as simple as ticking a few boxes on the Google Play developer dashboard. It’s not the hottest or most controversial hot take, but lite apps are good, and they should be available to everyone.

WhatsApp will support 1,024 participants per group
In case you love WhatsApp groups but feel that the main problem with them is that they just can't get large enough - good news! The service is currently working on adding support for up to 1,024 participants for each group. If that doesn't sound hellish to you, then you'll be happy to know that you should expect this feature to roll out to everyone soon. Currently, it's in beta testing, with some beta testers seeing it, while most aren't. Previously, WhatsApp added support for 512-member groups back in June, and now this has been upped even further to twice that. If you have the latest beta for either Android or iOS you should eventually get this feature. If you're not part of WhatsApp's beta testing, then rest assured that this will eventually make it to all users - though, with it being WhatsApp, it could take months. We are at least on the right track, however.. #WhatsAppNews #WhatsAppUpdate #TechnologyNews Increases Group Size To 1024 Participants https://youtu.be/aoyjmMauIk8
