OnePlus 11 series: What we know so far, what we want to see (Updated: Dec. 19)

    0
Update: December 19, 2022 (2:27 PM ET): We’ve added additional information about the official global launch date for the OnePlus 11.

Original article: Originally, we saw a very regular smartphone release schedule from OnePlus. There was a standard flagship phone in the first half of the year and a “T” upgrade in the second half. At this point, though, things are way more confusing. In 2023, we can’t even be sure there will be a OnePlus 11 Pro, even though we’ve seen a new Pro phone every year since the OnePlus 7 Pro back in 2019.

Regardless of the company’s ever-more-confusing portfolio, the OnePlus 11 Pro could end up being one of the better phones from the brand. But what should we expect and what do we want to see? Here’s what we know and our wishlist for the OnePlus 11 Pro.

LG’s Magic Remote is what finally got me to leave Roku behind

    0

Credit: C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

This past summer, my partner and I moved across the country from Connecticut to California. We elected not to move our ten-year-old television, figuring this was as good a reason as any to get a fancy new upgrade. After a bunch of research, we landed on the LG C1 — a 65-inch OLED TV with a 4K resolution.

Previously, we had been using a Roku Ultra as our media streamer because our old 1080p TV (also an LG model) had no “smarts” baked in. Considering the Roku Ultra supports 4K streams, my initial plan was to simply use the Roku with the new TV. However, that plan changed as soon as I used the LG Magic Remote for the first time.

This week, Google announced that Matter was rolling out to several of its speakers, smart displays, and routers. The smart home protocol, which has been in the works for several years, aims to unify different platforms like Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, and more under one roof, ensuring interoperability and easy setup. In short, Matter is the ultimate smart home dream, but the reality may be filled with disappointing limitations… for now.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is Android Authority’s pick for best wearable of 2022

    0

If we were to identify a single trend in the wearables market of 2022, it would be something along the lines of “bigger and better.” Rather than a stream of significant software innovation, many companies turned to their tried and true formulas, then dialed it up. We had Pros, Pluses, and an Ultra, all with beefed-up specs, added durability, and rounded-out feature sets.

For many, evolution over revolution paid off. But what was the very best wearable of the year? Our editorial and reviews teams chose one device as Android Authority’s Editor’s Choice winner for the best wearable of 2022 (plus four that came close).

The Whoop 4.0 convinced me I don’t need a screen on my fitness tracker

    0

I will be the first to admit I was dubious about the Whoop 4.0. In short, a fitness tracker without a screen sounds a lot like a glorified bracelet. However, after nearly a month strapped into Whoop’s ecosystem, I humbly admit I’m changing my tune. The Whoop 4.0 hasn’t only convinced me a screen isn’t necessary, it has me questioning if I want to go back at all.

    Whoop 4.0
About this article: I tested the Whoop 4.0 for over three weeks. The unit was provided by Whoop, but Whoop had no say in the direction or published content.

That machines will steal our jobs has been a common fear stemming back to the industrial revolution. We’ve long assumed that to be an inevitable truth for repetitive, manual, labor-intensive jobs. However, as writers or creative individuals, we tend to think that our professions sit well protected in a relatively safe domain. So when DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT were released this year, the potential repercussions of AI hit a bit closer to home.

DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT have brought up fears of computers replacing humans, but the reality is a bit more nuanced.

While DALL-E’s AI-initiated art proved to be an exciting experiment in derived creativity, ChatGPT takes it further. The AI and machine learning-based language model can script human-like content while pulling from a database of information that vastly supersedes human capabilities. Welp. Guess the computers finally came for my job?

Oppo Find N2 hands-on impressions: A sign of things to come

    0

Oppo’s Find N2 is the company’s second commercially available swipe at the foldable phone-tablet form factor. However, like the original Find N, it’s still only available in China (for the time being), and our admittedly brief time spent with the unit so far has been spent overcoming a few obstacles in the handset’s Chinese software. Still, there are plenty of interesting things to talk about with the Find N2 already.

Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, Oppo opts for a compact form factor. Closed, the handset measures just 132.2mm x 72.6mm, considerably shorter and only slighter wider than its main rival. It’s thinner and lighter too, dropping the weight by 42g down to 233g, and it’s 1.3mm slimmer when closed compared to the first Find N. The net result is a non-flip foldable that finally feels comfortable to carry in my pocket and use in one hand. You’ll have no trouble reaching the upper or lower portions of the front screen here.

Images of the base Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus have emerged online. The unsourced photos, posted to Slashleaks, show dummy units of the handsets, which are nonfunctional versions of the devices.

    • The ThinkPhone branding seems to be connected to Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops.
    • The ThinkPhone could have high-end specs.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Lenovo took a ThinkPad laptop and turned it into a phone? We haven’t either, but now we know thanks to a leak that has revealed the Motorola ThinkPhone and its specs.

As you may know, Motorola is a part of Lenovo. The company best known for its laptops acquired Motorola back in 2014, but the two brands have remained mostly separate from each other. But it looks like that status quo is going to change in the near future.

Will Valve make a Steam Deck 2 or a ‘Pro’ model? Now we know the answer

    • Steam Deck designers Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffais took part in an interview to reveal what’s in store for the handheld gaming PC.
    • The designers confirmed there are plans for a next-gen Steam Deck, but a “Pro” model is unlikely, for now.
    • The two also say the Steam Deck may never be “stable” like a traditional console, Valve wants to make another Steam controller, and more.

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nearly 11 months since the Steam Deck was released. Although the impressive handheld gaming PC isn’t that old yet, many have wondered if the system would get a next-gen follow-up. We now have the answer to that and a few other questions.

Steam Deck designers Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffais participated in an interview with The Verge. During the interview, the designers confirmed that there will be a Steam Deck 2, describing the handheld as a “multi-generational product.”

Exclusive: Android 13 is coming to Nothing Phone 1 — here’s why it took so long

    0

As I sat down to chat with Carl Pei about some news related to Nothing OS — the software powering his company’s Nothing Phone 1 — I was surprised by how he opened up the conversation. He told me a story about one of the early hires on Nothing’s software engineering team. After a disappointing interview with the developer, Pei told his team, “Please do not hire this person.” However, the team informed Pei that this was the only person who applied, and they needed to bite the bullet. After one day of work, the developer quit, telling Nothing he got a better job elsewhere.

“The worst engineer didn’t even want to work two days for our company,” Pei says with an exhausted laugh.

    • Google has announced that it is enabling Matter on a variety of Google products.
    • The new standard will make it easier to customize your smart home with other brands.
    • Google plans to enable Matter on more devices in 2023.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced the launch of Matter back in early November. Now we’re starting to see the fruits of that launch as Google announces Matter is coming to Google Nest devices, Android, and Google Home.

If you haven’t been keeping tabs on the latest developments in the smart home industry, Matter is a smart home interoperability standard that was developed in collaboration with Samsung, Amazon, Google, Apple, and hundreds of other companies under the CSA. Matter aims to fix the connectivity challenges between the large variety of smart home devices on the market. The idea is to make it easier for consumers to purchase whatever brand of smart home device they want and have it work seamlessly with the rest of their smart home ecosystem.

The Oppo Find N instantly attracted attention upon its reveal earlier this year, showing a more compact take on the Galaxy Fold-style form factor. Now, Oppo has returned with a sequel, while also teasing a brand-new foldable.

The Oppo Find N2 is a follow-up to the Find N as you’d expect, bringing a number of design-related improvements for starters. Oppo said the new foldable weighs 43 grams less than the original Find N, and was actually slightly lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The firm also claimed that the Find N2 is 1.3mm thinner than the original device when opened.

Google explains how it works its AI magic to label speakers in Pixel Recorder

    • Google has published a blog post detailing what went into creating the new Speaker Labels feature on Tensor-powered Pixels.
    • Google also revealed that it’s working to make the feature less power-hungry.

Google recently added Speaker Labels to the super helpful Pixel Recorder app. The feature automatically recognizes different speakers in a recording and assigns them unique labels in the transcript. Users can then assign speaker names to those labels. It sounds so simple. But Recorder’s on-device solution for labeling speakers had a lot of thought and work go into it.

What is the Oura Ring? Here’s everything you need to know

    0

There are scant alternatives for those who don’t want a fitness tracker or smartwatch to keep tabs on their health. Screenless trackers have bit the dust, while health-tracking earbuds are only useful during activity. Smart rings are seemingly the only viable and practical alternative. The most recognizable brand in this segment is Finnish firm Oura, largely thanks to the Oura Ring.

Now a third-generation product, the Ring initially focused on sleep tracking but has grown to survey more health metrics than ever before. If you fancy the idea of a smart ring that monitors your body without fuss, read on to learn everything about the Oura Ring.

    • Motorola has confirmed which of its phones will be getting the Android 13 update.
    • The company has since doubled the list of phones that will receive Android 13.

Update: December 14, 2022 (12:54 AM ET): A Motorola support agent has confirmed on the company forum that Android 13 is now coming to at least 20 devices. You can view the full list over here.

Original article: August 19, 2022 (12:49 PM ET): Google’s Android 13 update went live earlier this week with Pixel handsets getting first dibs. While not available yet for most other Android devices (outside of Oppo devices), it soon will be and manufacturers are getting prepared. Among those manufacturers, Motorola has stepped up and confirmed a list of devices that will receive the awaited update.

As discovered by GSMArena, on Motorola’s security updates page, you can click on the “Select your product” tab, and below you will see the company’s product family. When you click on a specific product from here, some of the devices will have “Next OS” listed in the details.  Currently, there appear to be 10 devices in total that will get the Android 13 treatment including:

    • Motorola Edge (2022)
    • Motorola Edge Plus (2022)
    • Motorola Edge 30
    • Motorola Edge 30 Pro
    • Moto G Stylus 5G 202
    • Moto G 5G 2022
    • Moto G82 5G
    • Moto G62 5G
    • Moto G42
    • Moto G32

At the moment, there are no available dates that tell us when to expect Android 13 to come to these devices. However, when the day comes, the update will bring a few interesting additions like a revamped Material You design, native Bluetooth LE audio support, and a number of security and privacy updates. To see the full list of features the update offers, check out our Android 13 features page.

The holidays are upon us, and Christmas is only days away. The shopping lines are only getting longer. Not to mention being around people still isn’t the safest and the stress of finding the right gift for all your loved ones. And there’s a chance they might not even like what you picked! Maybe it’s time to make things easier for everyone and go for some of the best digital gifts you can hand out this Christmas.

Options are plentiful. There’s plenty on offer, from music and movie subscriptions to gift cards or gaming services. And you can get it all from a computer, smartphone, or tablet. Likewise, Apple gift cards can be used for anything Apple offers. This includes devices, apps, Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, iTunes, Apple One, iCloud, Books, and more.

Another very versatile option is the Amazon gift card. It can be used to buy products from the popular online retailer, but the balance can also be used for buying Kindle books, paying for an Amazon Music Unlimited subscription, getting apps from the Amazon App Store, or even paying for Amazon Prime.
