    • Google has announced that it will support the RISC-V architecture.
    • This is an alternative computing architecture to Arm, which powers virtually all smartphones.

Android only supports two computing architectures right now, namely Arm and x86. The former architecture is used in chips powering smartphones, most tablets, smartwatches, and TV boxes. Meanwhile, the x86 architecture is used in chips that power most PCs.

A new architecture dubbed RISC-V has been gaining steam in recent years, and now Google has finally announced that Android will indeed support it (h/t: Ars Technica).

Have you ever noticed the padlock symbol in your web browser’s address bar? Most websites, including the one you’re reading this article on, use SSL certificates to establish a secure connection. The padlock icon offers a visual indication that the website has a valid SSL certificate installed. It also signals that any information you enter on the website is fully encrypted in transit. In other words, nobody can eavesdrop on your connection and steal sensitive data like your password or credit card details.

But what exactly are SSL certificates, how do they work, and can anyone get one? Here’s everything you need to know.

    • The Wireless Power Consortium has announced the new Qi2 standard for wireless charging of devices, replacing the current Qi standard.
    • Apple’s MagSafe wireless tech will be the basis for the new Qi2 standard.
    • Smartphones and other devices utilizing the Qi2 standard will launch by the end of 2023.

The Qi wireless charging standard has been around for supporting smartphones and other devices for 15 years, launching in 2008. Today, as part of CES 2023, the Wireless Power Consortium announced that Qi would be going away, replaced by the new Qi2 standard.

In its press release, Paul Struhsaker, executive director of the Wireless Power Consortium, stated that consumers and retailers were both confused about the current Qi standard. Specifically, some didn’t know the difference between a device that was truly Qi Certified and one that was not but claimed to work with Qi devices. He stated that will change with Qi2, saying, “Qi2 will be the global standard for wireless charging and provide consumers and retailers with that assurance.”

However, some of them stick out more than others. Here are the best car games for Android. Beware, though, that most development in car games goes to racing games. Samsung reveals the massive 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9 gaming monitor for CES 2023

    • Samsung announced some new PC monitors for CES 2023, including the 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9.
    • The curved monitor will have an aspect ratio of 32:9 and is the equivalent of two UHD displays on one screen.
    • Samsung has yet to announce release dates or prices for any of the new monitors.

Samsung is kicking off its CES 2023 announcements a bit early today with the reveal of several new PC monitors. The biggest new entry is the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 gaming PC monitor. This huge 1000R curved 57-inch display has an 8K 7,680×2,160 resolution screen with a 32:9 aspect ratio. That means owners will get the equivalent of two UHD screens on one display. By contrast, the Samsung Odyssey Ark monitor that launched in 2022 was “only” 55 inches and “only” had 4K resolution support.

The min-LED screen on the Odyssey Neo G9 will also have a Matte Display to reduce annoying light reflections while playing your favorite PC or console games. It will also have a 240Hz refresh rate for a smoother look for games that support that high rate. Finally, the monitor will have DisplayPort 2.1 support, which transfers data twice as fast compared to the older DisplayPort 2.1 tech.

As an adult with ADHD, Bluetooth trackers are a massive game-changer for me

Credit: Luke Pollack / Android Authority

To the absolute shock of nobody who has ever met me, I have been living with ADHD for my entire existence. If you don’t know what ADHD is, Psychiatry.org has a great guide on it. The short of it is I have trouble focusing on just one thing at a time and I spend a lot of time in my own head because what’s going on upstairs is a lot more interesting than reality. When your mind is moving a million miles per hour, it gets easy to get distracted. One of the side effects of this is that I lose things pretty easily. There are days when I’ll lose my wallet, phone, keys, and even my laptop all in the same 24-hour period. Yes, sadly, I said laptop.

In the past, I had a handy solution to this problem: After thirty minutes or so of wandering around looking at the ceiling, I’d ask my wife to find the missing items for me. She loved that, as you’d imagine. Nowadays, I turn to a more elegant solution, Bluetooth trackers.

In the past, I had a handy solution to this problem: After thirty minutes or so of wandering around looking at the ceiling, I’d ask my wife to find the missing items for me. She loved that, as you’d imagine. Nowadays, I turn to a more elegant solution, Bluetooth trackers.

My tech resolution for 2023 is to smarten up my home

Ah! The good ol’ smart home renovation. A task I’ve put off for a really, really long time. Being a tech journalist, smart home gadgets are naturally appealing to me. I’ve had plenty of them come in for review over the years, be it cheap home security cameras from the likes of Xiaomi, smart speakers from Amazon, Philips Hue and other smart lights, and so on.

Dark Sky is officially dead. Here are the best alternatives

    0

Dark Sky shut down its doors on Android a couple of years ago after Apple purchased the app. The company then removed it from the Apple App Store back in September of 2022. As of January 1st, 2023, Dark Sky is shut down for good. That means the API goes down, the app will cease to function, and it’ll no longer be available anywhere. It’s a sad day since we quite liked Dark Sky when it was on Android. Now, it’s time to shop for alternatives. Here are the best Dark Sky alternatives you can get on iOS and Android.

To douse your hopes a little bit, it’s important to note that there is no weather app quite like Dark Sky. It’s probably why Apple bought the app, because it was truly unique in its space.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

    0

Welcome to the 465th Android Apps Weekly and the final edition in 2022. Happy new years, and here are the big headlines from the last week:

    • We asked our readers how well Google did this year. You all told us that you thought Google did pretty well this year, both in terms of hardware and software. Regarding stats, 48% of you said that Google had a good year, while only about 5% thought the year was a total failure. You can hit the link to see the more granular stats.
    • We also asked our readers when they sideloaded an app on Android last. Over 40% of our readers have sideloaded an app within the last month, and only about 15% have never sideloaded an app at all. We found that interesting since the common narrative is that sideloading is rare. Apparently, we have some rare readers.
    • Our own Adam Birney attempted to use Google Translate on a trip with some mixed results. For example, some of the traveler-friendly features don’t work offline. Adam outlined his experience with the various features working or not working, and you can read it at the link above.
    • Google is worried about Search. The number of AI tools and their surging popularity have the company a little on edge. Reportedly, the situation is a code red at Google. The worry is that AI responses give such tight answers that people won’t click on advertising links anymore, which would cause Google to lose a lot of money. Hit the link to keep reading, and we’ll keep monitoring to see what happens.
    • As per the norm, we have rounded up the best new Android apps, best new Android games, and most controversial apps and games from the last year. You can hit any of the links to check out our selections. Overall, there are 50 apps and games to scroll through, along with ten more controversial apps and games. It was a pretty exciting year with some interesting launches.

5 things we want to see from Samsung in 2023

Samsung is saying goodbye to what has been a reasonably successful year for the Korean brand. The Galaxy S22 series built on the sales momentum of its predecessors, the company’s latest foldables delivered significant growth over 2021’s devices, and it fared better than most rivals when it came to weathering a declining global market.

We already have a pretty good idea about how the upcoming flagship Galaxy S23 series is shaping up, but there are still plenty of ways for Samsung to improve matters next year, though. So here are our thoughts on how the company can make 2023 better than 2022.

reWASD is the best controller software you’re not using

The average PC gamer likely has one controller they use for certain games. They connect that controller to their PC, launch a game, and then play. There’s not much extra thought put into it. However, if you’ve ever wondered what you could be doing with your controller and how you could make an experience specifically tailored to the games you play and the way you game, then let me introduce you to reWASD.

If you’ve never heard of reWASD, I’m not surprised. The company is relatively small in the gaming world — the reWASD subreddit only has 625 members as of writing. However, I have absolutely no clue why that is the case. I took a chance on the app earlier this year, and now I wonder how I ever lived without it.

New ones that hit the marketplace always claim to be better than the others, with features that often cause you to yawn out loud. But right now, we are going through a stage where artificial intelligence is running the show. Whether it’s writing your essays, souping up your smartphone camera, or controlling Terminator robots through Skynet, AI seems to be the flavor of the year. The newest one is called Lensa AI, which is already causing some controversy. Let’s cut through the marketing speak and see if Lensa is worth using and paying for.

How to download and install the Google Play Store

    0

The Google Play Store gets frequent updates, which is great news. The not-so-great news is that it can take weeks, or for some people even longer, to get the latest iteration. The basic functionality never changes, so being stuck on an older version isn’t all that bad. However, we understand the urge to get the latest and greatest version on your device. Looking to update Google Play Store on your device? Here’s how.

Please note that this is just for downloading and installing the Google Play Store on Google Android devices. For non-Google Android devices, such as the Amazon Fire Tablet, you’ll need to install Google Account Manager, Google Services Framework, and Google Play Services, as well as the Play Store in that order.

Samsung Galaxy A34 could come in four funky colors

    • The Samsung Galaxy A34 colors just leaked.
    • If the rumor pans out, it could come in Lime, Silver, Graphite, and Violet colors.
    • The overall design of the phone appears to line up with the rumored style of the Galaxy S23 series.

Samsung is sometimes hit-and-miss with the colors it offers with its smartphones. Usually, the company plays it safe with a few neutral colors, but also throws in one wild color for folks who like a little variety.

Thanks to a leak, we now have an idea of what to expect with the Samsung Galaxy A34 colors. In a bit of a change-up for Samsung, it appears the Galaxy A34 could come in one neutral color and three funky colors.

10 best Android lock screen apps and lock screen replacement apps

    0

The Android lock screen has evolved many times over the years. There have been various slide-to-unlock methods and OEMs have always put their own spin on things. As it turns out, there are also a lot of lock screen apps in the Play Store that can do even more. These days, we usually recommend people just use a fingerprint scanner to bypass the lock screen altogether. It’s okay if you don’t want to do that, though. Here are the best lock screen apps for Android.

It’s important to note that lock screen apps are a bit of a dying breed. Most biometric unlock methods bypass the lock screen entirely, and a lot of people don’t even look at it anymore aside from maybe checking a notification or the time. Plus, nearly all Android phones come with always-on displays by default, a feature that used to require an app.

High-end flagship devices grab most of the headlines each year, but we spend just as much time with budget phones here at Android Authority. Looking back, 2022 might go down as the year that the budget and mid-range markets grew up. Both segments are as hot as ever, primarily thanks to the steps taken to close the gap on premium devices.

Google, for example, brought its flagship Tensor processor to the Pixel 6a, OnePlus leans into speedy charging better than almost anyone, and Samsung keeps offering better software commitments at all levels. However, there’s still much more that the modestly priced market can do. Here are five things we want to see from budget phones in 2023.

Xiaomi announced the Redmi K60 series earlier this week, bringing some affordable flagship-level phones to China. We’re expecting at least one of these devices to land outside China and get a name change, and a trusted source has now shed apparent details.

MIUI Polska writer Kacper Skrzypek tweeted that the Redmi K60 will be called the Poco F5 Pro when it comes to global markets. Skrzypek didn’t reveal any additional details such as target markets, but we’re guessing that the phone will arrive in the likes of Europe and India. This would nevertheless be the first Poco F Pro model since 2020’s Poco F2 Pro.
