  • The Amazfit Falcon flirts with premium watch territory

The Amazfit Falcon is a very attractive device. For an Amazfit wearable, it also comes at a relatively high price. Whether the watch piques your interest or not, one thing is clear: Amazfit is extending its reach in the smartwatch space.

The company quite literally sent the Amazfit T-rex into space, and the Falcon boasts even better specs. But while the premium tier may be a new market space for Amazfit, it’s certainly not uncharted territory. The Falcon’s highlights and features are very familiar and merely inch the brand toward competitors like Garmin.

Step aside emulation, I restored my old Nintendo instead

As a twelve-year-old, my first brush with modern console gaming was with Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance SP. It wasn’t the first video game I’d played, but growing up in India, it was rare to have access to the latest and greatest consoles.

The Game Boy Advance introduced me to a new world of power-ups courtesy of Super Mario, epic storytelling via Final Fantasy IV, my own quest to be the very best thanks to Pokémon, and hundreds of hours of entertainment spent strategizing my next move in Advance Wars. However, as life goes, somewhere along the line, my childhood companion got left behind for bigger and shinier things.

Retrofitting my rented home with SwitchBot smart home tools has been a lifesaver

Credit: C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

In the summer of 2022, I moved across the United States from Connecticut to California. I landed in a small, two-bedroom rental house. The house itself was built by the owner as a pandemic-era project. Since it is brand new construction and I am his first tenant, he is (understandably) pretty protective of the house when it comes to modifications, care, and cleanliness.

While this isn’t really a problem for me, it does damper my smart home ambitions a bit. Because of how the house is designed — combined with the landlord’s watchful eye — I can’t modify much about it. Even hanging up art requires a specific set of tools and nails to minimize wall damage. Granted, most smart home stuff doesn’t require extensive household modifications, but some products do. Additionally, investing in products specific to this house is a waste of money because I likely wouldn’t need them wherever I end up next.

Microsoft hasn’t released a new Android device since 2021’s Surface Duo 2, but a new report may have shed some light on the company’s future plans.

Windows Central reported that Microsoft ditched the dual-screen design of previous Surface Duo devices in favor of developing a Surface Duo 3 with a folding display (akin to the Galaxy Z Fold line). Furthermore, the outlet’s sources assert that the company plans to release a more conventional slab-type smartphone akin to other handsets.

I took Sony’s best pocket camera on vacation and regretted it

From Sony to Xiaomi, smartphone brands are increasingly dabbling in one-inch camera sensor hardware. But as someone that doesn’t buy flagship smartphones, I had resigned to accept that it would be years before the technology would trickle down to my pocket. That is until I realized I could skip the wait and buy a more capable point-and-shoot camera instead. The Sony ZV-1, for instance, uses the same one-inch sensor as the cutting-edge $1,799 Xperia Pro-I and costs less than half as much.

If you look at Sony’s marketing for the ZV-1, it’s clearly aimed at aspiring content creators and videographers. But it’s equally capable in non-video modes too. Sony packs the same one-inch sensor in the photography-focused RX100. In other words, even though it lacks some auxiliary features like an electronic viewfinder, pop-up flash, and mode dial, the ZV-1 still has the same capable imaging hardware.

The Amazon Echo Studio’s big update makes it one of the best smart speakers

    0

Usually, what you hear is what you get when you buy a smart speaker. Software updates may add refinements and support for new formats and services, but overall sound quality tends to remain unchanged. After all, why would you put out anything less than what your speaker is capable of when you’re trying to impress buyers?

We liked the Echo Studio when Amazon first launched it in 2019. Towards the end of 2022, however, the company began rolling out a firmware update with big promises: better midrange clarity, deeper bass, and improved separation in the soundstage, even for music without spatial audio support.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

    0

Welcome to the 468th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week.

    • Sony is working on a monitoring app for its Android TVs. The monitor app works to prevent piracy. It would basically block sideloading of apps known to show pirated content. You can read more at the link, but here’s hoping it doesn’t interfere with normal sideloading.
    • YouTube is testing live TV with a small subset of its users. It lets you view live TV for free with advertising support. The service should compete with Tubi, Pluto TV, and Roku. All of those services also offer free live TV. We expect it to roll out later this year.
    • Google updated its official clock app this week. The new clock app makes it easier to create a custom alarm. It records a sound right from the app and gives you the tools to make it an alarm sound. It’s not a huge update, but it makes the app more useful.
    • Google Podcasts is not having a good time. Recently, it stopped showing up in Google Search results, and it’s being minimized in other areas. A Google spokesperson said these changes are normal. It doesn’t spell good news for Google Podcasts.
    • Google Stadia officially died this week. We wrote a eulogy for the service, so we won’t go into huge detail here. Google also launched a tool to convert a Stadia controller to a regular Bluetooth controller but warns that it removes Wi-Fi functionality. Hit the links to learn more. Goodbye, Google Stadia.

That meant leaving my own lofty apartment near Beirut to look for a small rental on the outskirts of Paris and letting go of a lot of the creature comforts that I’d gotten used to in my previous life, including two very awesome smart home devices: Somfy smart blinds and the Nuki smart lock and intercom system.

The return of in-person events has landed me in several new cities over the past year. From a stop in Chicago with Motorola to a week in Las Vegas for CES, I’ve had plenty of chances to explore. As the de facto runner of the Android Authority team, that almost always means lacing up a reliable pair of shoes and getting out for some miles. However, my internal compass is about as bad as they come, so I’ve had to rely on some help to see the sights. My running app, Strava, and specifically its maps, has become my go-to navigator when I’m on the road.

    • The threat AI products, like ChatGPT, has prompted Google to jumpstart development on AI products.
    • Google is reported to have over 20 AI products it plans to unveil this year.
    • Some of the products will be for developers and others for consumers

When ChatGPT started gaining popularity, reports came out that Google saw the product as a major threat to its business. In response to this threat, it seems Google is ramping up its AI development and could have over 20 AI projects ready to be unveiled this year.

According to a report from The New York Times, Larry Page and Sergey Brin — the founders of Google — have conducted several meetings with company executives about ChatGPT and the danger it poses to its Search business. This is a notable development given the two have mostly taken a hands-off approach with the company since 2019, allowing CEO Sundar Pichai to take the reins.

OnePlus’ 2022 flagship phones offered different charging speeds globally versus the US, with global models delivering higher wattages than devices in the US. For example, the OnePlus 10 Pro offered 80W wired charging speeds globally, but topped out at 65W in the US. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 10T offered 150W globally but 125W speeds in the US.

Now, frequent tipster Max Jambor has claimed on Twitter that this trend could continue for the OnePlus 11. More specifically, Jambor asserts that the US model will offer 80W SuperVOOC charging versus 100W SuperVOOC charging globally.

Best free streaming services: FreeVee, PlutoTV, Peacock, and more

Everyone knows that person who really seems to love TV. Maybe they used to spend several hundred a month on cable TV, or maybe they are the kind that collects subscription services like pokemon. I used to be one of those folks. If you can think of a mainline streaming service, I had it. I even paid for a few niche series like Crunchyroll. Then the pandemic happened, inflation got bad, and I found myself entering a new level of frugality. This meant dropping several streaming services, as well as cutting to ad-supported tiers.  That’s why I really appreciate the fairly recent rise of decent free streaming services.

While none of these free services are perfect, they are a great way to supplement broadcast TV, paid streaming, or cable. There are literally dozens of options out there, but not all free streaming services are created equal. Here’s a look at the very best free streaming services, as well as some general advice on what to expect.

☕ Hey there! I’ve been contemplating the purchase of a bicycle for a long time now, just so I can get somewhat active again. I thought about an exercise bike too, but why go there when you can get fresh air, I guess? Nevertheless, today’s edition covers major Samsung Galaxy S23 leaks, Apple’s new HomePod, and more.

Samsung is set to announce its latest Galaxy S flagship at Unpacked on February 1. Expect three different models, just like last year. For those that need the refresher, that means you can expect the Samsung Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and S23 Ultra. We already know a fair deal about what to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S23 family, including the Galaxy S23 colors we can expect. If leaked press renders and other rumors are accurate, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series will launch in the following four colors: Phantom Black, Cotton Flower, Misty Lilac, and Botanic Green. Remember these are not official names and are subject to change.

Samsung Galaxy S23 colors: More consistency across the models this time?

RIP Google Stadia, the gaming service aimed at no one

    Opinion post by
    Joe Hindy

Google Stadia captured the imagination of millions of people when it debuted in closed beta in 2018. When it launched publicly in 2019, it offered some unique features and truly excellent ideas. However, with a poor understanding of the current gaming market, Stadia never took off the way Google hoped, and the company shut it down today, January 18th, 2023.

So, as we did with the demise of Google Plus and Google Hangouts, we’re going to take a look at why Google Stadia failed, what it could’ve done better, and what positive impacts it left on the gaming industry.

Google Podcasts has stopped appearing in Search results

    0
    • Google search is no longer displaying play buttons on podcasts linking to Google Podcasts.
    • The ability to listen to podcasts directly from Search results is now gone.
    • The Google Podcasts app hasn’t been updated in months.

Google is known for killing off many of its products. In fact, it’s shutting one down today — Stadia. And it looks like Google Podcasts could be headed in the same direction soon.

Google introduced the Google Podcasts app back in 2018. The neat thing about the app is it allowed listeners to look up and listen to individual podcast episodes straight from Search. It also let you continue the same episode on various devices from the app or Search.

How to update your Stadia controller and connect it to a PC, Mac, and more

    0

Stadia’s January 18 shutdown may be a bit of a bitter event, but the situation is not all doom and gloom for customers. Users are getting refunds for everything, and Google has decided to unlock Bluetooth support for the controller, essentially turning it into one of the best gamepads around.

This means you’ll be able to enjoy playing games using the stadia controller on other platforms, wirelessly. This brings life back to the controller you paid good money for. Ready to upgrade? Let’s tell you everything there is to know about the process.

    • Apple was the number one smartphone brand for Q4 2022, according to Canalys.
    • Samsung took the top spot for 2022 as a whole, though.

It seemed like a rather tough year for the global smartphone market in 2022, with several quarters resulting in major declines across the board. Now, tracking firm Canalys has dished out results for Q4 2022 and the full year.

Canalys reported that shipments declined by 17% in Q4 2022 alone and by 11% for the year. In fact, the firm said the Q4 drop was the worst performance for the smartphone market in over a decade.

Galaxy S23 series could see big price hike, but don’t jump to conclusions yet

    • A leak suggests the Samsung Galaxy S23 prices could be higher than in previous years.
    • The leak is based on Australian pricing, which appears to be increasing.
    • Leaked pricing isn’t super reliable, especially in other countries, so take this news with a grain of salt.

For the past two years, the Galaxy S phones have landed at predictable prices. The vanilla model has been $799, the Plus model has been $999, and the Ultra model has been $1,199. It’s been that way since 2021.

However, a new rumor (via 9to5Google) suggests that might not be the case when it comes to Samsung Galaxy S23 prices. The rumor suggests that pricing could go up significantly, actually.
