A few days back, OnePlus launched the Oneplus 11 with 80W fast wired charging. Being a flagship device, one would have expected the phone to carry wireless charging support too. However, it skipped the feature, and the company explained users won’t really miss it because the wired solution is fast enough. So we asked our readers if they are okay giving up on wireless charging if their phones support fast wired charging speeds, even though the former offers more flexibility. Here’s how they voted in our poll.

    • This is in line with a previous tease by OnePlus.
    • The device apparently has a higher resolution screen than the Oppo Find N2.

    • A tipster has outlined how Indian Android devices could differ from global markets.
    • Smartphone makers would apparently only need to install the Play Store.
    • Phones in India could let users choose a default search engine on setup too.

Google has been forced to make a raft of changes to Android in India after a ruling by the country’s competition watchdog. Now, it looks like a leaker has uncovered a major change to Android’s licensing terms in the market.

Tipster and code sleuth Kuba Wojciechowski claimed to have obtained access to Google documentation that shows how Android phones in India could differ from global devices.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 revisited: The good and the bad six months later

    0

Smartphone screen sizes have increased dramatically over the years, to the point small phones are now a rarity. For me, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is the perfect compromise if you’re looking for something less massive. Essentially you get a large 6.8-inch display but in a form factor that folds in half for easier pocketability.

We generally had only good things to say in our initial Galaxy Z Flip 4 review, though nothing is perfect. Half a year later, is the Galaxy Z Flip 4 still holding up well? In this revisited Galaxy Z Flip 4 review we’ll be reexamining Samsung’s foldable flagship, especially now that new 2023 flagships have arrived.

The Pixel 7 Pro is my ultimate phone camera for concerts

Lights on, amp unplugged, stage empty. I get up with a wide grin on my face, still euphoric from the concert I just attended and the music I listened to. I start putting on my jacket when a hand taps me on the shoulder. I turn around; the person apologizes and asks me about my phone because they were impressed by the photos and videos I was able to capture. So we launch into a lengthy conversation about my Google Pixel 7 Pro and how excellent it is for concert photography and videography.

This hasn’t just happened once or twice, but at least a dozen times if we count both the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro — though the latter has gotten more attention. And the reasons are many, including the Pixel 7 Pro’s high-quality zoom, night performance, and ability to freeze a moment in time. But let’s back up a bit.

The best Bluetooth headphones can be ruined by a simple, elusive setting

    0
OnePlus Buds Pro pairing with OnePlus 9 Pro
    Opinion post by
    Thomas Triggs

While the majority of us are well acquainted with Bluetooth audio, not so many of us are aware of Bluetooth audio codecs. They dictate the quality, connection stability, and power usage of the data conversation between any two wireless devices. All A2DP-enabled devices — i.e. any modern phone or headphones — host the SBC audio codec by default. However, LC3 / LE Audio looks to replace this imminently and some Bluetooth 5.2-capable devices already offer LE (Low Energy) audio. While this relatively new technology takes time to roll out en masse, there are a plethora of high-quality audio codecs users can already take advantage of today.

Audio codecs dictate the quality, stability, and power use of a headphone's Bluetooth connection. But they're hide-and-seek champions on Android.

That said, we’re not always shown our audio codec choices in a user-friendly way. For example, I recently paired my Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds with my OnePlus 9 Pro. Without receiving any notifications, I assumed my devices would pair via the highest-quality connection available. After digging around in my phone’s settings, I realized they were in fact paired over the basic SBC codec. This connection offers up to 320Kbps of transfer speeds, but it loses a lot of audio data and quality in the process. Considering Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro are capable of streaming 250Kbps of AAC quality audio, this isn’t what I’d hoped for.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

    0

Welcome to the 472nd edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

    • Samsung’s Camera Assist got an update this week. It’s also available for more Samsung devices. Camera Assist is a Good Lock feature, and it gives you more options for photo post-processing than its predecessor. One such feature is the option to change how softening works. The update is available now for select Samsung phones.
    • Microsoft announced official Xbox support on Google Home. The support lets you control the console from the Google Home app and even gives you touch controls for navigation and media controls. Those with the February update on their Xbox consoles can use the feature now.
    • Google Photos had a bit of an issue this week. It entirely broke on iOS devices. The issue caused crashes on version 16.3.1. Google rushed another update that fixed the issue, so it’s all good for now. It wasn’t the biggest deal and only lasted for a day or two, but it was big news this week.
    • We asked our readers if they would consider switching to Bing. As it turns out, plenty of our readers said they would switch to Bing under certain conditions. Roughly one-third of our audience says they would switch to try out the ChatGPT integration, and another 23% said they would anyway. That’s over 50% of our readership, which is higher than we expected. Hit the link to see the full data.
    • Word around the water cooler is that Google employees are unhappy with Bard and Sundar Pichai. The reasoning is that Bard was rushed to market, and that’s why it didn’t perform very well. They also blame Pichai for the rush, which caused all kinds of negative press. It’s the latest rub in the Google Bard controversy, and we suspect there will be more.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro revisited: The good and the bad six months later

    0

At the risk of ruining the punch line, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is still every bit the winner it seemed at launch. The premium wearable’s refined build, extended battery life, and full suite of Google tools deliver one of the best smartwatch experiences available. We even named the watch our pick for the best wearable of the year at the end of 2022.

However, while Samsung continues to ride the wave of its Wear OS 3 success, a number of competitors are also making moves. Meanwhile, some changes we’d hoped to see hit the device via software updates haven’t arrived. How well does the self-proclaimed pro hold up six months later? I tried Google Photos’ printing service: Great prices, unmatched convenience

I haven’t printed photos since I got my first digital camera around the mid-2000s. The ability to snap and save, and snap and save, without wasting precious paper or accumulating hundreds of blurry prints from every birthday and picnic, was a game-changer. Up until December 2022, I had never even considered the idea of printing a digital photo, convinced that I preferred the diversity of the Google Photos album feature on my Google Nest Hub.

But something changed in the last month. Call it nostalgia, personalization, or a subconscious influence from my sister-in-law, the end result is that I found myself looking at photo frames on Amazon and Ikea and pondering what would work well in my small apartment. In my defense, my husband and I had been renting this fully-furnished place for a year, and we needed it to feel like it was “ours” more than a random Airbnb we slept in.

This isn’t anything new, as we saw basic takes on this feature in the early 2010s. But Google and Samsung have both launched new-generation modes in the last couple of years, in the form of Magic Eraser and Object Eraser respectively.

According to Google, personal/free Google accounts will get a migration prompt starting on March 6, 2023. If you don’t accept the prompt, Google says it will automatically migrate you over sometime in Q2.

    • The Samsung Galaxy S23 phones have a new feature called Samsung Message Guard.
    • It screens incoming images on Samsung Messages as well as Google Messages for malware.
    • The feature will eventually work with third-party messaging apps too.

Messaging apps are notorious playgrounds for hackers that target vulnerable people with malware hidden in videos, links, and images. Opening these files can compromise your personal data and can even give bad actors access to your devices. To protect against such threats, the new Galaxy S23 series comes with a feature called Samsung Message Guard.

Global streaming giant Netflix has announced its intentions to crack down on password sharing, making it harder to log into a friend’s account to save money. But some are wondering what that means exactly. Wasn’t password sharing always against Netflix’s rules? Does this mean you can split the cost of a subscription with your roommate? How will Netflix stop password sharing if you’re allowed to use your account on different devices and in different places?

This is all a lot simpler than it sounds, but there are a lot of moving parts, so we’ve gone ahead and broken down how this all works, and more importantly, how it will affect you and your Netflix experience. If you’re not already a Netflix subscriber, you can hit the link below to sign up and check it out.
