  • Google Pixel Fold allegedly spotted in the wild for the first time

    • A Reddit user claims they saw a Google employee with a Pixel Fold while on a train.
    • The user described the device as dark blue or black, thin bezels on the outside, and thin.
    • If this is the Pixel Fold, it would be the first time the phone was seen in the wild.

When products are in development, it’s not uncommon for employees to test those prototypes outside of the company. It’s a great way to evaluate the device in a real-world setting, find flaws, and discover areas that could use improvement. Of course, this opens up the risk of eagle-eyed individuals catching an early glimpse of your hardware. It appears Google may have just suffered this consequence with its upcoming Pixel Fold.

The highly anticipated Google Pixel Fold may have just been seen in the wild for the very first time. A user on Reddit who was riding on the A Train in New York City says they saw a Google employee on the same train as them. That Google employee was apparently “doing everything he can to cover up.” The Reddit user says the employee was holding a foldable phone that they believe it was a Pixel Fold.

    • Once you upload a picture, the tool will translate the words in the photo to your desired language.
    • The tool uses the same technology as the AR Translate feature for Google Lens.

Google has made a helpful change to Google Translate. The web version of the tool can now convert text from images into your desired language.

When you go to the Google Translate website, you’ll see a row of tabs near the top of the page. If you have used the tool before, you may notice that there’s a new tab among the group. This new tab is the Images tab.

Android 14 will allow you to use camera and screen flashes for notifications

Credit: C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
    • Android 14 notifications can now sync with flashes from the camera or display.
    • The controls appear within the Accessibility settings.
    • You can even change the color of screen notifications, although not on a per-app basis.

Back in the day, the best Android phones had notification lights. These RGB spots would flash or pulse when you had a notification. You could even change the lights, so you knew what kind of notification was waiting for you just by looking at it. For example, you could have a blue pulsing light for Facebook Messenger and a white flashing light for emails.

Over time, the notification LED vanished as display bezels got too slim to house them. With Android 14 notifications, though, it looks like you’ll be able to at least somewhat replicate the functionality of a notification LED on any Android phone (h/t Mishaal Rahman).

This phone received 7 straight years of software updates, besting even Samsung

    • The Fairphone 2 just received its final software update.
    • This means the device received seven years of continuous software support.
    • The phone rides off into the sunset on Android 10, but started with Android 5 Lollipop.

In the world of Android, Samsung is the best top-ten OEM regarding Android support commitments. The company offers four Android upgrades and five years of security patches for most of its devices — including mid-rangers. This is a better commitment than even Google provides to Pixel phones.

However, even Samsung can’t compete with Fairphone. Today, that company issued the final update to the Fairphone 2, which launched way back in 2015. When it debuted, the phone had Android 5 Lollipop. It reached end-of-life status with Android 10 over seven years later and with 43 updates under its belt.

    • The Korean brand previously used a custom CPU in its own chips from 2016 to 2020.

Samsung has decided to skip Exynos processors for its Galaxy S23 phones this year, and it’s believed that the company is working on an in-house processor for launch in 2025.

Now, Korea’s Pulse News reports that Samsung Electronics is going a step further and has organized a team to develop a custom CPU core, citing multiple sources. It’s also believed that the firm has recruited a former AMD employee who was responsible for CPU development to lead this new team.

I retrofitted my blinds to make them smart, and it’s been awesome

I recently retrofitted my rented house with a few smart home products from SwitchBot. It’s been revolutionary using SwitchBot’s various tools, including its mechanized button-pushing SwitchBot Bot, infrared blasts from the Hub Mini, temperature control through the Meter Plus, and saving floor space with the LED Strip Light. However, at the time, I could not test out the newest product in the company’s smart home portfolio: the SwitchBot Blind Tilt.

This new device snaps onto your pre-existing “dumb” blinds and makes them smart by allowing you to control the tilt of the panels remotely, which is ideal if you can’t install or don’t want the expense of smart blinds. SwitchBot was kind enough to send me a set of Blind Tilts to try out.

Bluetooth provides us with a huge range of features, from connecting peripherals to streaming music to wireless earbuds. The standard is poised to become even more useful thanks to Auracast audio broadcasting capabilities.

While not strictly brand new (the technology was announced in 2022), we spent some ears-on time with Aurcast at MWC 2023. Based on our experience, broadcast capabilities are set to reshape how we think about Bluetooth audio.

Should you get a robot vacuum, or a smart stand-up vac?

I recently had the chance to review the Roborock Dyad Pro, my first smart vacuum that isn’t a robot. That concept might be unfamiliar to some people, so prompted by others at Android Authority, I’m sharing my experiences with both cleaning options — weighing their pros and cons for people who’ve tried one or neither.

Let’s clear things up immediately: a robot vacuum is capable of fully autonomous cleaning, or at least operating without being directly guided by your hands. Control is handled through a mobile app, or if you’ve got one, a smart speaker or display. Some robots come with docks that automatically empty debris into a bin, or even change out dirty water if the robot has mopping functions.

Android 15 goes cold and creamy for its dessert-themed code name

    0
An Android robot outside a Google building.
    • Android 15’s dessert-themed code name has dropped.
    • The next major OS update after Android 14 is known internally as Vanilla Ice Cream.
    • The code name was found in the AOSP as a series of code changes.

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been a month since Google released the first Developer Preview of Android 14. As such, there’s a good chance that most of the people reading this have not had the opportunity to try out Android 14 yet. Despite the fact that Google is still working on the next major OS update, it’s already looking ahead and has given Android 14’s successor the codename Vanilla Ice Cream.

If you’ve been keeping up with the history of Android, then you know the OS is usually accompanied by a code name. You also likely know that Google has a penchant for giving its code names a dessert theme. For example, version 1.5 was known as Cupcake, the following update was called Donut, and version 2.0 was named Eclair.
