    • Pixel 7 and 6 owners are reporting battery drain and overheating issues.
    • The issues appear to be linked to June’s security patch.
    • It appears some users have been spared from the problem.

Last week, Google finally released the June security patch for Pixel 7 and 6 devices. While it’s better late than never, it appears the update may be causing issues for some owners.

As spotted by 9to5Google, hundreds of Pixel users have been flocking to a new Reddit thread. The thread is full of reports claiming that both the Pixel 7 and 6 series is experiencing battery drain and overheating issues after updating to the June 2023 security patch. It also adds “The select text option isn’t working and a lot more bugs.”

    • There were reportedly five times the number of false 911 calls than average in Coffee County, Tennessee during Bonaroo.
    • The iPhone’s Crash Detection feature is blamed for the sudden increase in false alarms.
    • It appears Bonaroo attendees were dancing hard enough to set off the feature.

When Apple revealed the iPhone 14, it also introduced a new emergency feature for Apple devices called Crash Detection. Since then, there have been a number of incidents involving false alarms due to the feature. The most recent incident appears to have caused some chaos for a county in Tennessee.

This weekend more than 80,000 people attended the annual music festival known as Bonaroo. As this event went on, local emergency responders were spammed by false 911 calls, as reported by WKRN.

The best Steam Deck docks in 2023

    0

The Steam Deck may be superior to the Nintendo Switch in some ways, but one definite advantage to the Switch is that it ships with a dock. If you want to connect a Steam Deck to your TV or even transform it into a desktop PC, check out some of our top dock picks below.

    The best Steam Deck docks

While the Steam Deck can technically connect to just about any USB-C hub, something dock-worthy supplies enough power to sustain and recharge the handheld, and at least one video output for connecting to a TV or monitor. You’ll need multiple USB ports for peripherals. For desktop use you’ll probably want a model with a stand, as well as an Ethernet port for rock-solid network performance.

You can now get the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and Buds 2 Pro in new Pokémon cases

    • Samsung has launched three new Pokémon Packs for the Galaxy Buds 2 and the Buds 2 Pro.
    • These are themed around Ditto, Jigglypuff, and Snorlax, including the earbuds, designed cases focusing on the Pokémon, and matching stickers.
    • They are available only in South Korea, with no word on global availability.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are great earbuds for their price ranges. While we’re looking forward to the Galaxy Buds 3 launching in a few weeks, Samsung has launched three new Pokémon cases for the Galaxy Buds 2 and Buds 2 Pro in South Korea.

The three new Pokémon cases for the earbuds are Ditto, Jigglypuff, and Snorlax (via Sammobile). Of these, only Ditto is the full Pokémon thanks to its smaller (and conveniently flexible) design, while the other two are just heads. Obviously, if you know your Pokémon well, you’d understand that carrying a full Snorlax shape in your pockets would be rather inconvenient.

The best smartphone cameras have several different approaches to zoom these days. For example, Samsung is content to offer dual zoom cameras (3x and 10x), Google offering a single 5x camera, while several other brands stick to 2x to 3.5x tele cameras.

After several weeks of using the HUAWEI P60 Pro, I realized that I’d love to see this particular telephoto camera experience on more smartphones. Allow me to explain why.

If rumors are to be believed, we’re about a month away from the Galaxy Watch 6’s launch. And we’re also a month away from me watching Samsung’s keynote with a bit of jealousy because as much as I want to love this watch, it isn’t for me. The reason is simple: Samsung keeps locking some of its watch features to its own phones and, as a multi-phone (and specifically Pixel) user, I would be missing out on several crucial features if I bought this watch.

I say this with the resignation of a smartwatch fan who got a Galaxy Watch 4 in 2021 and loved how it mixed the best of Samsung with the best of Google and Wear OS. It took a few months and updates, but having access to both Bixby and Google Assistant or Samsung Pay and Google Wallet was neat. So was the ability to install Gboard and Google Messages on the watch to have a uniform experience with my phones.

These are the 12 features I love most about iOS 17

    Dhruv Bhutani

Apple’s glimpse at the future with its first AR/VR headset, the Vision Pro, might have stolen the show at WWDC. But for most users, like me, the software upgrades heading later this year over to the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch will be far more meaningful. Unlike last year when it debuted a series of visual changes to the interface with iOS 16, Apple’s iOS 17 rollout is seemingly focused on feature parity with the best Android phones and bridging the gap with a series of additions that long-time users have requested.

Of course, like any self-respecting geek, I practically jumped onto the iOS 17 beta as soon as it was available. I’ve been putting all the newly available features through the wringer ever since. Early impressions suggest that iOS 17 doesn’t have everything I was hoping for, especially the much-rumored side-loading support. However, there’s a lot to be excited about still. Here are the top iOS 17 features that have me excited for the public release of Apple’s latest software.

5 Android apps you shouldnt miss this week Android Apps Weekly

    0

Welcome to the 489th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

    • WhatsApp had a few different announcements this week. The first is a new feature that automatically silences calls from unknown contacts to help reduce spam calls. Second, the app is getting Meta Quest support in an update coming soon. Finally, Google fixed a bug on the Android Privacy Dashboard that was erroneously suggesting that WhatsApp was listening to its users. Hit each link to learn more.
    • Gannet, the largest publisher in the US, is taking Google to court over its digital advertising tech. The lawsuit alleges that Google has a monopoly in the advertising space. Google responded by saying that there are tons of options in the advertising, but that they choose Google because it’s simply the best service available. We’ll see how this turns out.
    • Spotify is getting closer and closer to releasing its Hi-Fi subscripti on tier. The new Supremium tier is debuting later this year according to Spotify. We don’t much about it yet, including its exact release date or cost. However, we do know that it’ll include a Hi-Fi audio option along with some other perks.
    • YouTube TV is working on ways to present ads during breaks in programming that previously didn’t feature ads. The ads show during the previously free “Zen” moments. We think that defeats the purpose of a Zen moment, but Google disagrees. This is being tested among a small selection of users right now. In happier news, Google is expanding YouTube TV’s multiview streams to include business, news, weather, and other options.
    • The Reddit protest is more or less over. The subreddit we focused on, r/Android, is back, albeit in a restricted mode. Most other subreddits are also back up and running as of this writing. Many others remain in a restricted or private mode as well. The mods at r/Android are asking the community what they should do moving forward, as are the mods in many other communities. It’s another step in the process, so we’ll see how it turns out.

7 things the Google Pixel Tablet does better than my iPad Air

I’m not here to tell you that the new Google Pixel Tablet is better than an iPad. Putting aside the Android versus iOS/iPadOS discussion, Apple has clearly had a headstart in the tablet space and put in the effort to maintain a consistently solid strategy across more than a decade, while Google tried and stopped and changed directions so many times. Apple has had 13 years to refine its tablet OS and attract third-party app developers to get to where it is today with the iPad — miles ahead. So the comparison between the two isn’t even logical.

Still, having used the Pixel Tablet for over a week now, I can say that Google positively surprised me a few times. There are little features here and there that make some aspects of the experience on the Pixel Tablet better than on my iPad Air. Let’s explore them together.

What is a 0.5 selfie and how can you create one?

    0
Pixel 7 Pro selfie with rear camera through viewfinder edited
Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

Are you following the latest trends on social media? A new one has arrived. Maybe you’ve noticed some interesting selfies lately, showing odd proportions like long arms, more prominent foreheads, and what may seem like overall distorted perspectives. We’re here to tell you all about what is a 0.5 selfie and how to create your very own.

    What is a 0.5 selfie?

A 0.5 selfie is pronounced as a “point five selfie” and is simply a photo shot with an ultrawide angle camera. Such ultrawide angle lenses have curved glass, allowing images to cover a wider visibility. As a result, the image will be morphed, extending and changing the look of how things look, especially closer to the edges. This is why 0.5 selfies usually show super long arms; these are commonly along the photo’s edges. This effect is similar to what a fisheye lens does, but undertoned.

Now the UK is warning Android users over accidental emergency calls

    • UK police have warned against Android’s Emergency SOS feature.
    • The feature has resulted in a sharp rise in accidental emergency service calls.
    • The warning comes after similar warnings around the world.

Several Android OEMs offer Emergency SOS on their phones, allowing you to quickly tap the power button five times to call emergency services. This has unfortunately resulted in a sharp rise in the number of unnecessary emergency calls in some countries, and now the UK has raised the alarm.

The BBC reports (h/t: Mishaal Rahman) that the National Police Chiefs Council of the UK has warned against Emergency SOS functionality on Android devices. The feature has been available on Android since Android 12.

NFC payments are about to become faster easier and truly contactless

    • The NFC Forum has laid down a roadmap that outlines five key initiatives through 2028.
    • The outline offers a glimpse at the future of NFC technology.
    • One of the initiatives is to increase the range of NFC connections by four to six times the current distance.

Have you ever noticed that contactless payments aren’t exactly contactless? Since near-field communication (NFC) technology works at such a short distance, you often end up having to touch your device with another device. But that status quo could change in the next few years.

The NFC Forum — a group founded by Sony, NXP Semiconductors, and Nokia in 2004 to improve NFC — has revealed a roadmap for NFC technology that extends from now to 2028. This roadmap — created by representatives from Apple, Google, and more — outlines five key initiatives for the direction of the technology over the next two to five years. One of those initiatives is to increase the range of NFC connections.

iOS 16.5.1 fixes critical iMessage security flaw you should update immediately!

    • Apple is rolling out critical security updates to iOS 15 and iOS 16, patching an iMessage flaw that was used to plant spyware on iPhones.
    • The exploit was used on iPhones running iOS 15.7 and earlier. iOS 16 had other changes that protected it from this cyberattack.
    • iPhone and iPad users are recommended to update their devices immediately.

Apple prides itself on the security and privacy provided by iPhones, and to a good extent, we do agree that it is better than Android. However, iPhones are relatively secure, and not absolutely secure. The proof for this assertion lies with the new iOS 16.5.1 update that is rolling out to iPhones, bringing an urgent fix for a critical iMessage security flaw. If you own an iPhone, we strongly recommend updating your phone right away.

Apple is rolling out iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1 to users. The primary fix mentioned in the changelog is a fix for an issue that prevented charging with the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter.

Not a sports fan? YouTube TV tests new multiview stream combos just for you.

    • YouTube TV is expanding its multiview streams beyond sports.
    • A select number of users can choose between business, news, weather, and other multiview streams.
    • The feature is gradually rolling out over the summer.

There’s nothing worse than deciding between two live events you want to watch. This is especially true for sports enthusiasts. YouTube TV had somewhat lessened this impact when it debuted its multiview feature for basketball fans in March. Now, it’s expanding this feature beyond sports.

A select number of users can pick “up to five” brand new multiview streams from their YouTube TV home screens to view business, news, sports, weather, and Deportes content side-by-side. These options will be available all day, every day. While this does give users more choice, there are several limitations. For now, YouTube TV pre-selects which streams can be viewed alongside each other — users can’t mix and match. Additionally, the feature is still limited to streaming devices and TVs.

    • Microsoft plans to raise the price of the Xbox Series X in select regions.
    • Xbox Game Pass will also get a little more expensive.
    • New members will see the price hike for Game Pass on July 6.
    • Monthly recurring subscribers won’t see the change until August 13.

Back in October, head of Xbox Phil Spencer warned that we could see price hikes for Xbox products in 2023. Unfortunately, it looks like that day is almost here as Microsoft plans to raise prices soon.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft will be raising the price of the Xbox Series X on August 1. If you live in the US, Japan, Chile, Brazil, or Colombia, the console will stay the same price. However, the cost will be bumped up everywhere else.

The Vision Pros clunky battery may be why Apple didnt show off fitness apps

    • A new report claims that Apple’s Vision Pro has fitness features.
    • Apple may have been working with Nike to create workouts.
    • Former employees say Apple may have hesitated to show off the Vision Pro’s fitness features because of the clunky external battery.

It may not seem like to those who haven’t tried, but VR can be a pretty good way to work out. However, when Apple showed off its Vision Pro headset at WWDC, fitness seemed to be missing from the list of potential uses of the device. A new report claims there may have been a reason why the feature didn’t appear at the show.

Although Apple did allow WWDC attendees to try out a meditation app on the Vision Pro, the company mostly avoided demonstrating the Vision Pro’s potential as a fitness device. This wasn’t because Apple thinks its device shouldn’t be used this way, but rather Apple may not have been ready to show off this capability.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series offers what are likely to be among the best phones in 2023. The Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra are outstanding handsets, but they are not for everyone. Luckily, you can still download the Samsung Galaxy S23 wallpapers and use them on any other device.

All three versions of the Galaxy S23 series come with the same wallpapers, featuring an orb in different colors. These are made to match the available colors of the devices, which are Green, Phantom Black, Lavender, and Cream. And all four available wallpapers come in both blurry and clear versions.

Apple takes a page from Samsung patents Gear VR-like headset for the iPhone

    • Apple secured a patent for a new head-mounted display.
    • The patent describes a goggle-like accessory that encases an iPhone or iPad.
    • The device is reminiscent of Samsung’s retired Gear VR headset.

It appears Apple is going all in on mixed reality technology. In addition to the recently announced Vision Pro, it’s believed the Cupertino firm is working on a more affordable version of the device. But that may not be the only headset the company is working on, according to a new patent.

As discovered by ZDNET, Apple secured a new patent this week. The patent in question shows a head-mounted display (HMD) style accessory capable of housing an iPhone or iPad. Reportedly, the device would be able to operate like an iPhone or iPad-powered mixed-reality headset.

The spot where YouTube TV gives you a break from ads is now getting ads

    • Google appears to be testing a new way to show YouTube TV ads.
    • Ads are appearing during the previously ad-free “Zen” moments.
    • It is likely Google is just testing this for now, as only select users see the advertisements.

If you’re a YouTube TV subscriber, you likely have seen a “Zen” moment at some point. These are peaceful video clips that play in a spot where you’d usually be seeing an advertisement if you were watching that particular program on traditional cable. It’s a nice break from the deluge of ads you’ll usually get during a show.

However, it appears Google is trying to make these ad-free moments a new place to put YouTube TV ads. According to users on Reddit, some people are seeing text-based ads overlayed on top of the Zen video clips. In the image above, shared by a Redditor, you can see the logo for Progressive on top of the usual Zen clip.

Garmin Epix Pro review: Should you buy it?

    0

Garmin Epix Pro review: At a glance

    • What is it? The Epix Pro is the half-step successor of the Epix Gen 2. Not quite an Epix 3 but boasting major upgrades, the device is referred to as the Epix Pro, or the Epix Pro (Gen 2). A welcome update to one of Garmin’s top smartwatch families with AMOLED displays, the Epix Pro series brings three unique case sizes to the lineup. Each packs a powerful heart rate sensor, multiband GNSS, a built-in LED flashlight, and advanced training tools.
    • What is the price? Garmin Epix Pro models start at $899 for a 42mm or 44mm model and $999 for the largest 51mm option. Sapphire editions cost an additional $100 across the lineup.
    • Where can you buy it? The Garmin Epix Pro is available now from Garmin and Amazon.
    • How did we test it? I tested the 42mm Garmin Epix Pro (standard edition) for one week. The review unit was supplied by Garmin.
    • Is it worth it? There is a lot to like about the upgrades on what was already one of Garmin’s top watches. Anyone intimidated by the line’s historic 47mm profile can finally hit check out on an Epix Pro that’s built for smaller wrists. Likewise, anyone hankering for an oversized wearable can now snag a 51mm option. Across the series, all three models offer a beautiful display, virtually flawless GPS and heart rate tracking, and tons of useful training features. The Epix is pricey for sure, but the hardware is fantastic and the company’s commitment to supporting its devices makes the price tag an easier pill to swallow.

To the joy of petite and wide-wristed users everywhere, the Epix Pro is now available in three sizes: 42mm, 47mm, and 51mm. As when Garmin added a second size to its Instinct 2 lineup, I gratefully tip my hat to the company for more inclusive offerings.

This year hasn’t been great for Android so far. In two recent reports, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) showed that more people than ever are jumping ship from Android to iOS. The agency says that most of these folks — about 53% — leave because of “prior phone problems.” In other words, the users weren’t happy with their Android phone’s performance in some way and decided iOS would be a better fit.

In other regions of tech, this kind of conclusion can make sense. For example, a Garmin smartwatch will be vastly superior for hardcore runners than something like a Fitbit. However, a Fitbit would likely be better for someone who isn’t an athlete but wants to keep tabs on their overall health. Experiencing any device on either of these platforms and deciding you’d rather be in a different ecosystem does not mean the original platform sucks: it just means it isn’t a good fit for your needs.

We can’t talk about the best wireless earbuds or best headphones on the market today without mentioning Sony. The company has found a winning formula and churned one success after the other with its WH and WF series. Two things have stopped me from trying its products so far, though: I prefer over-ear headphones that wrap more tightly around the head and collapse into a more portable form factor, and I simply can’t use its earbuds because they’re too big. But the upcoming Sony WF-1000XM5 could change that thanks to their smaller form factor which promises better comfort.
