    • Samsung’s next Unpacked event will take place on July 26.
    • The launch will be hosted in Seoul, Korea, which would be a first for the company’s foldable phones.
    • Samsung is also expected to launch the Galaxy Tab S9 and Galaxy Watch 6 series at the event.

Samsung has finally announced the exact date for its second Unpacked launch event of the year. On July 26, Samsung will unfold the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in Seoul, Korea. Samsung has held Galaxy Unpacked events here before, but never for foldable phones. Samsung says it chose the location because it is “a place where traditional culture and futuristic visions intersect to inspire global trends and game-changing innovation.”

    • A new leak has provided details on the Nothing Phone 2’s camera and display.
    • The Nothing Phone 2 will reportedly have a 50MP Sony IMX890 main sensor, a 50MP Samsung JN1 ultrawide sensor, and a 32MP Sony IMX615 selfie camera.
    • The display is said to be a 120Hz panel with a resolution of 1080×2412.

Earlier this morning, we reported on leaked marketing images of the Nothing Phone 2. Although it provided a good look at the front, back, and side of the device, no information came with the images. But a new leak has remedied that, delivering new details about the handset.

Trusted tipster Kamila Wojciechowska recently posted a thread on Twitter dishing out some of the specs of the Phone 2. Specifically, Wojciechowska revealed what we can expect for the camera and the display.

From specs to pricing relaunched Galaxy S21 FE details leak

    • More apparent details about the relaunched Galaxy S21 FE have appeared online.
    • The phone is expected to be re-released in India with a Snapdragon chip.
    • The leak also points to a recommended price tag in the market.

We first heard last week that Samsung would relaunch the Galaxy S21 FE in India, bringing a Snapdragon chipset to the market instead of the Exynos chipset. The Korean brand has since confirmed the so-called Galaxy S21 FE 2023 via its own website, and we now seem to have specs and features as well.

The list of specs and features comes via an apparent internal training document obtained by The Tech Outlook (h/t: Slash Leaks). And those expecting any major upgrades outside of the Snapdragon 888 chipset might be disappointed.

    • The company also has a Pro Plus variant with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

The nubia REDMAGIC gaming phones are often the most powerful smartphones in a given year, owing to top-flight internals and fantastic cooling features. Now, the company has launched the REDMAGIC 8S Pro, and this looks like the most powerful smartphone of 2023.

The brand confirmed last week that the new phone is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Leading Version, which is virtually identical to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy SoC seen in the Galaxy S23 series. That means you’re getting a peak 3.36GHz CPU clock speed and 719MHz GPU speed, compared to the standard chip’s 3.2GHz and 680MHz respectively.

5 best N64 emulators for Android

    0

The Nintendo 64 was in a class all on its own. It featured some legendary games such as Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, 007 Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Pokemon Stadium. Now, thanks to emulators, you can play those classics on your Android devices. Let’s take a quick look at the best N64 emulators for Android.

Before we start, it’s worth noting that many of these use the Mupen64 open-source project as a base, so there isn’t much of a difference between them aside from some unique features and perhaps a bit more stability with different sets of games. You can use any of them and get essentially the same emulation experience. The main differences are in the UI and extra features.

The best N64 emulators for Android

    1. ClassicBoy Pro
    2. Lemuroid
    3. Mupen64Plus FZ
    4. RetroArch
    5. Super64Plus

    ClassicBoy Pro

    Price: Free / $5.99
    ClassicBoy Pro screenshot 2022

ClassicBoy is one of the better multi-system emulators. It supports the NES, SNES, SNK NeoGeo, most Game Boy systems up through Advance, Playstation, and Nintendo 64. Each platform has its own set of features, along with a set that works on all of them. Some of those features include save/load states, gesture controls, sensor support, and more. The N64 emulator portion worked well in our testing. This is the spiritual successor to the original ClassicBoy, and the developer seems to be improving it all the time, so this should work out to be a great N64 emulator in the long run.

    Lemuroid

    Price: Free
    Lemuroid screenshot 2023

Lemuroid is another all-in-one style emulator. It supports over a dozen systems through the use of cores. Basically, you download the emulator, install the core, and Lemuroid can play that system. It emulates the Nintendo 64 pretty well, and it’s one of the few N64 emulators on Android that gets regular updates. Some of the emulator features include auto-saving, gamepad support, fast-forward support, cloud syncing, and local multiplayer support. There is a bit of a learning curve with this one, but otherwise, it works pretty well.

    Mupen64Plus FZ

Price: Free / Up to $9.99
    M64Plus FZ Emulator screenshot 2022

Mupen64Plus FZ is one of the newer N64 emulators, but it’s not easy to use. The app includes tons of files, video profiles, and other stuff. Some games work with some profile setups, while others don’t. Most games do work on this one, but it will require some playing around. The developer has a good guide linked up in the Google Play description to help. Otherwise, the emulator features various plugins, the usual emulator stuff, and more.

    RetroArch

    Price: Free
    RetroArch screenshot 2023

RetroArch is one of the best N64 emulators on Android, and it also supports a ton of different systems. Like other multi-console emulators, you need to download cores that work as system emulators. For newbies to emulation, it’s a little difficult to use. However, it works great once you get used to it. It can auto-scan for save files, save and load states, remap controls, load cheat codes, and a lot more. It’s also entirely free and open-source. There’s a lot that RetroArch can do, it just may take a bit of time and effort to get everything working.

    Super64Plus

    Price: Free (with ads)
    Super64 Plus screenshot 2023

Super64Plus isn’t our favorite, but it’s a decent Android Nintendo 64 emulator. It does the basics, including opening and running N64 games, saving your game, on-screen controller customization, and hardware controller support. There are also some video plugins and other features to help you in case a ROM isn’t running quite right. The developer seems responsive to people posting issues on Google Play. The only downside is this emulator hasn’t seen an update since 2021 as of this writing, so hopefully the developer is still working on it.

Twitter opens up about those pesky new tweet-reading limits on the platform

    • Twitter has clarified its latest move to impose limits on the platform.
    • The company says any advance notice to users about the limits would have prompted bad actors and bots to evade detection.
    • The platform says that the rate limits affect only a small percentage of users and have had a minimal effect on advertising.

Elon Musk shocked users last week when he announced “temporary” limits to the number of tweets they could read on the platform. Unregistered users were also blocked from viewing tweets. While some argued that the company is simply attempting to cut costs, Twitter has now published a blog post further clarifying the reason behind its sudden and highly unpopular move.

The 10 best Chrome extensions of 2023

    0
Google Chrome logo stock photo 2
Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

The Google Chrome browser has literally thousands of extensions available, and they can do everything from blocking ads to improving your productivity. These are software programs that add new features or functionality to your Chrome browser. They’re usually free to use and readily available in the Chrome Web Store. Whether you’re a seasoned Chrome user or you’re just getting started, we’ve rounded up 10 of the best Chrome extensions currently available.

Best, in this context, is very subjective. The vast majority of extensions are specific to certain tasks, and most users would have no need for them, but some people would use that extension almost exclusively. It’s all about personal preference and need. For example, I have half a dozen extensions that relate specifically to my role at Android Authority, but they’re unlikely to enhance your life much. Similarly, the Google Translate extension is one of the most used ones, but mainly by people who need to translate between languages on a frequent basis.

Motorola Razr series hits India hints at standard Razr price in US

    • Motorola has brought its latest Razr foldable phones to India.
    • The standard model starts at ~$732 in the region.
    • This could hint at an aggressive price for the vanilla variant in the US.

Motorola launched the 2023 Razr series in the US last week, consisting of the standard Razr and the more capable Razr Plus. We got a $999 price tag for the Plus variant, but the company didn’t dish out US pricing for the standard model. Now, the new phones have launched in India, and the Indian pricing might give us a hint of what to expect for the standard variant in the US.

Motorola launched the Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra (as they’re known outside the US) in India yesterday, and the phones start at Rs 59,999 (~$732) and Rs 89,999 (~$1,098) respectively.

In this guide, we explain what a T-Mobile MVNO is, why you might want to consider one, and finally, we take a brief look at the best carriers on T-Mobile’s network.

Verizon is known for its extensive LTE network, which is the largest in the United States. It also offers one of the fastest 5G networks as well. There’s a lot to like about Big Red, but the price isn’t one of the reasons. Verizon is one of the most expensive carriers in the United States, but the good news is you don’t have to pay their premium. A Verizon MVNO uses the same network but can cost significantly less.

In this article, we explain what a Verizon MVNO is, as well as the pros and cons. Afterward, we’ll take a closer look at the best carriers on Verizon’s network.

Pixel 4-style hands-free gestures could come to another phone brand

Google Pixel 4 Motion Sense Soli radar music control
    • An upcoming Xiaomi device could gain hands-free gesture functionality.
    • This would allow you to control media playback and much more without touching the screen.
    • The feature would come years after Samsung and Google offered their own hands-free capabilities.

2013’s Samsung Galaxy S4 was one of the first phones to offer hovering functionality, allowing you to hold your hand over the screen and interact with the phone without actually touching the screen. Google followed up with its Motion Sense feature on 2019’s Pixel 4 series, and it looks like we can now add another OEM to the list.

MIUI Polska writer Kacper Skrzypek discovered an image (seen below) and references to a Xiaomi device with a 3D ToF camera. Skrzypek reports that this is probably a tablet and claims the 3D ToF sensor will enable a variety of features.

Apple could finally switch all AirPods to USB-C starting with AirPods Pro

    • Apple could finally bring USB-C to the charging case of the AirPods Pro this year, alongside the USB-C shift on the iPhone 15.
    • The AirPods and AirPods Max will also get USB-C but with “future generations.”
    • Apple could also be exploring more health features, like including a temperature sensor on future models.

Apple’s AirPods are one of the company’s most successful products, generating billions of dollars annually and popularizing TWS earbuds. With the impending shift of the iPhone 15 to USB-C, Apple could also explore shifting the AirPods lineup to USB-C, starting with the AirPods Pro. The company is also exploring adding health-related features to the AirPods.

According to reliable Apple leaker Mark Gurman, Apple could finally yield to the shift to USB-C. First on the list for its hearables are the AirPods Pro, which could finally get a USB-C charging case as part of its refresh this year.

Fed up of rubbish headphone presets? This free app cured my frustration

    0

There’s no better feeling than splashing out on a new pair of earbuds and being caught off-guard by how great they sound. Generally speaking, good-sounding headphones are ready to spin your favorite record straight out of the box. However, those seeking to tweak their audio can do so within their headphones’ companion app, and many users will find that presets help bring specific elements of music to life. On the other hand, audiophiles likely want the ability to customize their sound to perfection. The problem is that most headphone companion apps don’t offer flexible audio customization. If presets miss the mark, you’re stuck with a soundscape that you can’t adjust and are not fully happy with.

Thankfully, it isn’t all doom and gloom. If greater audio control is what you’re after, look no further than third-party EQ apps. There’s an increasing amount of free and paid-for equalizers to choose from nowadays. In addition to varying prices, equalizer apps don’t all play the same. Some EQs are simple and user-friendly, while others are intricate and aimed at audiophiles. With all this in mind, let’s discuss the pros and cons of using equalizers and look at some popular third-party EQ apps.

I love my ASUS ROG Ally but you shouldnt buy one (yet)

    0

I didn’t need to buy an ASUS ROG Ally. I already have a desktop gaming PC that’s more than powerful enough for my needs, and my portable gaming needs are largely covered by the Nintendo Switch and a handful of mobile games. Heck, I don’t even plan on using it outside of the house.

But there’s something magical about laying down on the sofa after the kids have gone to bed and chiseling away at my bountiful backlog of PC games. It’s a luxury that for me is absolutely worth it, but I’d still hesitate to recommend the ROG Ally to anyone who’s on the fence. Let me explain why.

Twitter becomes first social media network to limit how many posts users can see

    • Twitter has imposed limits on how many posts users can see.
    • Most users can only view 1,000 posts daily, while Twitter Blue subscribers can view 10,000 posts daily.
    • This move aims to address “extreme levels of data scraping” and “system manipulation.”

When discussing social media apps, we usually envision an app service designed to pull you into doom-scrolling on your phone for hours. Social media networks want you to spend all of your hours on them, so they can learn more about what you like and use that to serve you with targeted ads and thus make money. Twitter, unironically, has become the first social media network that has placed a hard limit on how many posts you can see in a day before you get locked out of the site.

Forget the Pixels Magic Eraser I now use Photoshops AI instead

How far can you, or rather, should you push an image through editing? It’s a bit of a philosophical debate that I’ve previously dabbled in and ranted against. But the fact of the matter is AI is everywhere and is a critical part of modern computational photography. Increasingly though, AI is becoming a part of the post-photography experience too. And Google is leading the charge here. Two years ago, the company introduced Magic Eraser with the Pixel 6. The seemingly magical object removal experience made it a cinch to eliminate errant objects, people, and more with a single tap.

But removing objects is just one aspect of photo editing. Google’s upcoming Magic Editor promises a whole lot more. This year, at Google I/O, the company debuted a slew of upgrades to the built-in photo editor app on Pixel hardware. The updated app promises to use a combination of generative AI and semantic segmentation to ease up experiences like moving objects around within a frame, resizing them, changing the color of the sky, and more.

The Zenfone 10 makes me miss Googles Nexus series

    Opinion post by
    Robert Triggs

I might be showing my age here; like many Android enthusiasts, I have a particular soft spot for the long-departed Nexus series (and Google Play edition devices, if you remember those?). Yes, it’s been nearly seven years since the Nexus 6P, and the series was plagued with more issues than paying customers should have to shoulder. Still, the series produced a unique blend of hardware and software that, when it worked, was greater than the sum of its parts.

Having spent some very enjoyable time with the ASUS Zenfone 10 and Google’s Pixel 7 series, I can’t help but pine for another supergroup outing that shows off the best of what Android can be. That might sound strange, given that Pixel hardware is by far the best it’s ever been, and ASUS runs virtually stock Android on its handset. But hear me out.

HUAWEI Watch Ultimate review: Should you buy it?

HUAWEI Watch Ultimate review: At a glance

    • What is it? The HUAWEI Watch Ultimate is a HarmonyOS-based smartwatch with 10ATM/100m water resistance. It is specifically designed to serve as a dive computer for scuba diving and freediving. It works best when paired with a HUAWEI smartphone but is also compatible with other Android phones and iPhones.
    • What is the price? The HUAWEI Watch Ultimate price is £699/€749 for the Expedition Black model or £799/€899 for Voyage Blue. The two versions are identical except for bezel style and watch strap (the Voyage Blue model includes a titanium bracelet). While it wasn’t officially released in the US, you can pay a little extra for the international version on Amazon.
    • Where can you buy it? The HUAWEI Watch Ultimate is available via Amazon, the HUAWEI website, and select retailers. It went on sale on April 3, 2023.
    • How did we test it? For this HUAWEI Watch Ultimate review, I wore it as my sole smartwatch for a month. The unit was supplied by HUAWEI.
    • Is it worth it? You should buy the HUAWEI Watch Ultimate if you’re specifically looking for an all-in-one dive computer and smartwatch. It’s a good basic-to-intermediate dive computer and a premium smartwatch offering with the usual HUAWEI caveats. For casual divers, it means you won’t need a separate watch and dive computer. Advanced divers, however, will likely want more advanced features like air integration.

Dont have a Twitter account? Then Twitter is now off-limits for you

    • It’s now impossible to view tweets or use the platform at all if you’re not logged into an account.
    • Previously, the public had at least limited access to Twitter.
    • It’s unclear if this is intentional or just a mishap.

If you try to view a tweet without having a Twitter account or logging into your existing account, you may have noticed something has changed. It appears the social media platform is now blocking unregistered users.

Since undergoing new management, Twitter has seen numerous changes over the months. The latest change seems to be making it impossible for outsiders to use the platform at all. Members at Android Authority have been able to replicate this issue on both desktop and mobile.

Its time to say goodbye to this long-running podcast app

    • Stitcher is shutting down on August 29.
    • The podcasting service will no longer be available beyond this date.
    • SiriusXM, Stitcher’s owner, is due to integrate podcasts into its subscription business.

There is no shortage of podcasting apps, especially now that Spotify and Google Podcasts are part of the field. However, there will soon be one less option for users. Popular app and podcasting service Stitcher is officially shutting down in August.

According to its FAQ page, the move is part of owner SiriusXM’s plan to incorporate podcasts into its larger subscription business. Users are promised an “all-new listening experience later this year” with the service. Notably, Stitcher Premium subscriptions are no longer available, while existing users can request refunds through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

    • Google has scrapped its plans for next-gen augmented reality glasses.
    • The company has decided to pivot to developing software platforms for AR instead.
    • Google employees were reportedly frustrated with leaders continually changing the strategy for the project.

Currently, there’s an augmented reality (AR) hardware arms race brewing between Samsung, Apple, and Meta. At one time, Google was also a part of that race, as it worked on a product called Project Iris. But it appears Google has now bowed out of that race after canceling the project.

Details about Project Iris first emerged in a report from The Verge in January 2022. The device was described as an AR device resembling a pair of ski goggles. However, that particular device happened to be a separate AR project in partnership with Samsung — which was announced earlier this year. The real Project Iris was instead a series of products resembling a pair of glasses.

Googles Nearby Share can now send files to your sleeping devices

    0
    • Nearby Share, Android’s equivalent to AirDrop, continues to receive updates from Google.
    • The latest change lets you share files and text to your devices even when their screens are off.
    • Google hasn’t announced this change, but we recently noticed it on our devices.

A lot of people are still not aware that Android has an equivalent to AirDrop called Nearby Share, and that’s a shame because it only keeps getting better and better. Earlier this year, the sharing service added support for Windows, enabling you to share files between your Android device and your PC. Now, the service appears to have quietly rolled out a nifty quality-of-life improvement that’ll make sharing even more convenient between your devices: the ability to send things to your devices even when their screens are off.

When you previously opened Nearby Share on a sender device, only devices whose screens were on and unlocked could appear in the list of devices you could send to. This was done to save battery life, as devices have to periodically broadcast their availability over Bluetooth in order to appear as a receiver target in Nearby Share. That’s not a big deal when the screen is on and the phone is unlocked, as the battery drain from periodic Bluetooth scans is negligible compared to other battery guzzlers like the screen itself or the modem. However, when the screen is off, it’s generally best to throttle scans or services to maximize battery life, and that’s what Google did with Nearby Share for the longest time.
