Spotify Connect is the reason I won’t switch to another music platform

Ten years after it was first introduced, Spotify Connect is just as magical as it was on day one. A simple feature on paper, Connect transforms the Spotify app on any device into a universal remote for your entire Spotify experience. And it works seamlessly no matter what I’m using, so much so that even if I wanted to switch music services now, I couldn’t. Once I got hooked on the simplicity of Connect, I just couldn’t imagine going without it.

See, for the past three years, I’ve had a YouTube Premium subscription, which gives me access to YouTube Music too, but I’ve been paying for a separate Spotify Premium plan on top of that. Why? Because each time I think of moving services, I start listing all the reasons I shouldn’t: my personal library, the playlists I follow, all the Eurovision fans who create National Finals playlists for other fans, Spotify’s ubiquity across multiple platforms, and on top of it all, Spotify Connect.

In the world of cameras, a 23-24mm lens is considered very wide — not ultrawide, but still quite wide. Most photographers often gravitate towards the 40mm or narrower lenses, unless they specialize in landscape photography. There’s a reason for that.

50mm is the equivalent of human sight. Plus, you often can’t come close enough to many subjects you want to snap a pic of — be it people, pets, buildings, or nature — and even if you did, you risk a lot of distortion. Stepping away and focusing with your eyes or zooming in with your camera lets you take a more detailed and less distorted photo. It also gives you more freedom in framing the pic as you wish while getting rid of distracting elements. In contrast, you can’t hide much in a wider photo.

I tried Beeper to consolidate my messaging apps and realized that’s a bad idea

In 2020, Eric Migicovsky — the co-founder of Pebble, one of the early smartwatch companies — announced the creation of the Beeper app. In a lengthy blog post, Migicovsky explained how Beeper would “bridge all our chat networks into one client.” In other words, he wanted to ease our suffering from the overwhelming number of messaging apps we use by bringing them all together into one hub. Later, Migicovsky also promised the ability for Beeper users to use iMessage on Android, which is considered the holy grail of messaging app experiences.

Once Beeper started gaining some steam, I signed up for the waitlist. It took over a year (407 days, to be specific), but I finally gained access to the service, which is still in beta. Excitedly, I set it up, all the while thinking, “This is going to solve all my messaging problems!”

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 493rd edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

• Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, told MKBHD on Threads that he believes Android is better than iOS this week. This sparked a pretty big debate that was pretty entertaining to read. You can learn more about it at the link, but it seems some folks still can’t decide which one is better.
• YouTube Premium prices have gone up again. The changes affect a range of plans. Individual YouTube Premium plans cost $2 more than they used to. The annual plan jumped from $119.99 to $139.99. Student plans also got a price bump from $6.99 to $7.99 per month. Finally, YouTube Music Premium is going from $9.99 to $10.99 monthly. The only plan that doesn’t seem affected is the family plan, which received a price bump earlier this year.
• Netflix ramped up its removal of password-sharing this week. The restrictions are rolling out worldwide with subscribers receiving emails to let them know the change is happening. In addition, Netflix also removed its Basic tier in the US and the UK, so if you want to subscribe to avoid password sharing, it’ll now be more expensive.
• Google is testing an AI bot to write news articles. That’s a pretty big deal, especially for people who work at websites like this one. Google intends for it to assist journalists in writing news stories, and it’s been presented to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and News Corp. This is a hit-or-miss kind of thing, as AI bots still get a lot of things wrong. However, it’s still a step toward higher AI integration.
• Speaking of steps toward AI, details of Apple’s foray into the AI space leaked this week. It’s called Apple GPT, and Apple is working on it internally. Outside of being confirmed to actually exist, we don’t know much about Apple GPT. It uses an LLM platform based on Google JAX, and calls their own implementation AJAX, which is pretty adorable. The only plan that doesn’t seem affected is the family plan, which received a price bump earlier this year.
• Netflix ramped up its removal of password-sharing this week. The restrictions are rolling out worldwide with subscribers receiving emails to let them know the change is happening. In addition, Netflix also removed its Basic tier in the US and the UK, so if you want to subscribe to avoid password sharing, it’ll now be more expensive.
• Google is testing an AI bot to write news articles. That’s a pretty big deal, especially for people who work at websites like this one. Google intends for it to assist journalists in writing news stories, and it’s been presented to The New York Times, The Washington Post, and News Corp. This is a hit-or-miss kind of thing, as AI bots still get a lot of things wrong. However, it’s still a step toward higher AI integration.
• Speaking of steps toward AI, details of Apple’s foray into the AI space leaked this week. It’s called Apple GPT, and Apple is working on it internally. Outside of being confirmed to actually exist, we don’t know much about Apple GPT. It uses an LLM platform based on Google JAX, and calls their own implementation AJAX, which is pretty adorable. I love Android, but I prefer it more on tablets than phones

Although I knew that Android on tablets has come a long way in the past couple of years, I didn’t expect to fall in love with it so much that I’d think it’s better than Android on phones. But that’s exactly what happened when I started using the Pixel Tablet. Looking past the Pixel aspect of this particular tablet, Android as a whole feels more polished on larger screens now. Not just compared to a couple of years ago (which, ha, did that even count?), but also compared to the same modern experience on Android phones.

I know that may be a bit controversial to say, especially considering Android’s fraught history with tablets, but hear me out. Everything I want to do on my phone is simpler, smoother, and better on tablets. Yes, obviously, it’s the larger screen factor, but it’s also how Android has adapted to it.

The Samsung Galaxy Ring should copy (or improve) these features from Oura

When it comes to my loyalty and finger-based wearables, Oura has, as they say, put a ring on it. The Oura Ring 3 does a lot of things really well while taking up very little space or brain power. This laser machine magically fixes green lines on OLED phone displays
