Specs and images of Samsung’s XR headset prototype have leaked

    • A prototype of Samsung’s upcoming XR headset has leaked, giving us a good look at one possible version scheduled to launch in 2024.
    • The prototype has four tracking cameras, dual RGB cameras for color passthrough, and a depth sensor. It also does not rely on any controllers.
    • With its XR headset, Samsung could target a price range of $1,000-$2,000. However, some reports suggest that this prototype has been canceled in favor of a better product.

Samsung has had a few tries in the AR-VR space, with devices like the Samsung Gear VR once considered one of the best mobile VR headsets. Samsung has ambitions of taking this one step forward with extended reality (XR), with the company officially announcing it is working on a Samsung XR headset at Samsung Unpacked in February 2023. Now, a prototype of the Samsung XR headset has leaked, and we have our first look at the device.

Chinese news website Vrtuoluo posted the specs and images of a Samsung XR headset prototype, but the site has since deleted its report. You can still find the content on Web Archive, though.

You’re looking at a similar design here, albeit with a slightly larger OLED screen (1.74 inches versus 1.64 inches). The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s new 3x camera could address a key Ultra weakness

    • Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra will reportedly offer “good” 5x zoom quality.
    • This is due to the previously rumored 50MP 3x tele camera, a leaker claimed.
    • This would address a key weakness of Galaxy Ultra phones if confirmed.

A leaker claimed last week that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will gain a 3x 50MP telephoto camera, representing a major resolution improvement over the current 10MP 3x tele camera. Now, the same source has more details on this new camera.

Leaker Ice Universe claimed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that this new 50MP telephoto camera has a 0.7-micron pixel size and a 1/2.52-inch sensor size. This, therefore, isn’t the largest sensor by any stretch, being slightly bigger than the Pixel 7 Pro’s 48MP 5x periscope lens but falling well short of 50MP main cameras seen on the likes of the base Galaxy S23. It sounds like all these pixels will be put to good use, though.

    • Code within Oxygen OS/Color OS indicates that OPPO is working on a new Holo Audio feature.
    • This feature lets you play multiple audio sources simultaneously in spatial audio and further allows you to place the audio sources in the 3D audio space around you.

OPPO’s Color OS skin powers not only OPPO smartphones but also Realme and even OnePlus smartphones (Oxygen OS uses Color OS as its base). Consequently, features announced for Color OS end up on many devices that are popular around the world. We’ve spotted a new feature that is coming to Color OS. Potentially called Holo Audio, this new feature could allow you to place multiple sound sources around you in spatial audio.

We’ve been enjoying the Oxygen OS 14 beta release based on Android 14 on our OnePlus 11. While the changes on the surface are not as many, the build contains clues to some features that could make their way to future OPPO, Realme, and OnePlus devices.

Apple is rumored to launch the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 next month, but users hoping for substantial changes will be disappointed. Instead, a new leak indicates that Apple has a more significant upgrade planned for the Apple Watch X, the nickname for the tenth-anniversary version of the smartwatch.

While unconfirmed, troubled development and dubious performance were the likely culprits behind Samsung’s decision.

With a semiconductor restructure well underway, rumors are circulating that Samsung is preparing to return to chipset action earlier than anticipated with an upcoming Exynos 2400 mobile processor. While still unofficial, we’ve collected publicly available information to piece together what we might expect from Samsung’s next flagship chip.

I tried a self-hosted Google Photos alternative but still can’t switch

Cutting the cloud tether is increasingly easy, with plenty of excellent self-hosted options to house your documents and media library on your own NAS drive. But there’s one service that’s proven stubbornly tricky to replace — Google Photos. Out of all Google’s apps and services, Photos is the one that I use the most religiously. Whether it’s automatically backing up my phone’s photos, neatly organizing trips into albums, sharing snaps with family and friends, or quickly editing a pic when I’m not at my PC, Google Photos is a powerful one-stop-shop for everything mobile-photography related. As I’m sure you know.

Still, I’ve taken so many snaps over the years that I’ve hit Google Photos’ free 15GB limit. I’m reluctant to pay monthly for Google One storage when I have terabytes of disc space sitting idle on my home server. But breaking out from this particular Google service is harder than most.

Samsung is wrong, software is the biggest problem for foldables

Foldable phones aren’t cheap. Samsung knows this — we all know this — but the company released an interesting statement recently when asked about that cost. Essentially, Samsung believes that the price of foldables will come down in the future, but this year the team was focused on soothing customer pain points rather than reducing costs. For the Galaxy Z Fold 5, that meant a lighter, slimmer design, and for the Galaxy Z Flip 5, that meant introducing the Flex Window and updating the cover screen experience.

While both fifth-generation updates make life easier in their own ways, I’m not sure that Samsung’s head is in the right place. The Flex Window has its fair share of quirks, and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 isn’t that much lighter than its predecessor (about 10 grams). Instead, I think the next giant leap foldables need to take is sharpening the software experience.

Fitbit Sense 3: Everything we know so far and what we want to see

    0
Fitbit devices remain among the most popular wearables available, including the company’s top smartwatch lineups. The health-focused Fitbit Sense line is the brand’s top tier with advanced sensors and a range of smartwatch tools. While we weren’t blown away by the latest model during Fitbit Sense 2 review, we’re excited to see what lies in store for the series. Find out everything we know about specs, pricing, and possible features of a potential Fitbit Sense 3.

Will there be a Fitbit Sense 3?

A Fitbit Sense 2 rests on pebbles, display a watch face.

Credit: C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

There’s no reason not to expect Fitbit to continue the Sense lineup, at least not at this point. While there have only been two generations launched so far, the smartwatches represent the company’s highest-end wearable with advanced features for anyone with a focus on health stats. It’s unlikely Fitbit will abandon the offering.

The only reason we hesitate to call the Sense 3 a sure thing is the overall uncertainty of Google’s Fitbit ownership. The Google Pixel Watch threw a curveball at the Fitbit stable and only time will tell how the situation is going to play out. We’ve already seen some negative impacts with features stripped back from the Sense 2. Again though, we don’t anticipate Fitbit dropping its smartwatch line altogether.

PS5 Slim appears to leak in video, and it’s not very slim

    • An image of what’s believed to be the PS5 Slim appeared online this morning.
    • Now a video has emerged of a hand holding what appears to be the rumored console.
    • It’s difficult to tell how much smaller this system is compared to the standard PS5.

Since the PlayStation 2 days, Sony has always eventually made a slim version of its consoles. Now that the PS5 has been out for about three years, there were questions about whether Sony would make a slim version of the PS5. A couple of new leaks seem to suggest Sony may be working on PS5 Slim.

A video of what appears to be a new version of the PS5 has leaked on X (formerly Twitter) via BwE_Dev. The video shows a hand holding and waving the console back and forth. It’s uncertain exactly what this new model of PS5 is, but it could be the rumored PS5 Slim.Even though it doesn’t look much smaller than the PS5 in the video. As we can’t confirm the veracity of this leak or vouch for the reliability of this leaker, take this with a grain of salt.

    • Real-world photos of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones have leaked.
    • These headphones will reportedly have spatial audio.
    • Bose’s new cans are said to be Snapdragon Sound Certified.

It was only a day ago when we were treated to leaked renders of the Bose QuietComfort Ultra (QCU) headphones and what could become one of the best true wireless earbuds in the QuietComfort Earbuds II. Now we have real-world photos of the upcoming addition to the QuietComfort line and new details.

Through an anonymous source, The Verge managed to get their hands on real photos of Bose’s upcoming headphones. Based on the images, the QCU looks almost like a hybrid between the QuietComfort 45 and the Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. The QCU appears to have a hinge for folding, a dedicated capacitive volume slider area, and an oval-shaped carrying case.

The best Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic bands

    0

A new band is arguably the fastest way to switch up the look of your favorite wearable, and when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, looks are everything. The Classic’s raised, rotating bezel leaves a traditional impression best matched with an elegant strap. To help narrow down the options, we rounded up the best Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic bands to pair with your new smartwatch.

Buying the right Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic bands for your needs

If you’ve weighed the pros and cons of a Galaxy Watch 6 vs 6 Classic and landed on the latter, you’re likely after a more refined look. Fortunately, both sizes of the device use 20mm quick-release straps so they’ll work with any bands you may already have from the Galaxy Watch 5 series or 4 series. Samsung sells a number of high-quality options as well and we’re big fans of the company’s updated release button. If those picks are too pricey, their devices are also compatible with tons of third party-options available. Look for a material that best suits your personal needs. A leather or metal band matches the device in elegance but aren’t the best picks for an active lifestyle. Nylon or silicone, on the other hand, are lightweight and breathable but may not fit in with formal wear.

Apple is changing the way iPhone users hang up calls

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority
    • Apple is changing the placement of the end call button on the caller screen in iOS 17.
    • The latest iOS 17 beta 5 moves the button to the bottom right corner alongside the other group of buttons.
    • This small change is expected to greatly impact user experience as it goes against muscle memory.

Apple’s marketing would have you believe that the company is the innovator supreme of the smartphone world, but that’s not usually the case. In fact, Apple is one of the slowest to make any changes to the iPhone or iOS. Every small change will affect how millions of users use their iPhones, and the company is slow and deliberate about them. Even the iPhone 15‘s shift to USB-C is coming against the backdrop of regulations in the EU. Now, Apple is making another small but substantial change, and that is moving the “end call” button on iOS.

Apple rolled out iOS 17 beta 5 recently, and one of the changes within is where the end call button is placed on the call screen. As Gizmodo points out, Apple has changed the button’s position, moving it from the unmistakable prominent center spot to the right corner. The other buttons are also moved around, so now you have a group of buttons at the bottom where the red button used to live alone.

Verizon apparently loves raising prices, so it’s doing so again for some plans

    • There’s a Verizon price increase on the way for certain grandfathered unlimited plans.
    • This increase will affect “Mix & Match” plans, which Verizon sunsetted earlier this year.
    • You can expect an increase of $3 each month.

If there’s one thing Verizon loves, it’s switching the branding of its wireless plans. Just this year, Verizon abandoned its “Mix & Match” suite of plans, which included confounding names like “Go Unlimited,” “Beyond Unlimited,” and “Above Unlimited.” What does the word “unlimited” even mean anymore?

Regardless, the only thing Verizon might like more than swapping plan names is increasing the cost of those plans. Now, we have confirmed a new Verizon price increase coming on August 29. The increase will affect subscribers with one of those aforementioned Mix & Match plans along with the old 5G Start plan.
