I love using Google Maps lists to bookmark my favorite and essential spots. They’ve been incredibly useful while discovering Paris after my move here, planning various trips, and keeping tabs on all the cool spots around the world that I hope to see one day. But if you use lists as much as I do, you hit a brick wall: Nondescript blue dots everywhere on your map.

As I added more and more places to my different Paris and world lists, I noticed they were becoming useless overall, especially on the relatively small screen of my Android phone. Is this dot a restaurant I’ve been to or one I want to go to? Is it a free garden or a paid exhibition? A Lebanese restaurant or a store that sells Italian products? Chrome’s invasive new tracking makes this the perfect time for a new browser

After much hand-wringing and outright objections from the broader industry, Google is forging ahead with its Ad Topics API approach to web tracking and ads, bringing Chrome closer to advertisers. The change is disguised as a quietly rolling out privacy update for Chrome, almost as if Google is pre-empting a backlash. You may have seen the update pop-up on desktop and mobile already. If so, it might be a good time to consider a new web browser.

If you’re unfamiliar with Ad Topics and the ironically named Privacy Sandbox, the TDLR is that Google wants to move away from standard cookies to a more refined “interest-based” approach to tracking and serving ads. Essentially, the API builds up a profile of topics you’re interested in, personalizing the ads Google’s partners serve up without needing a personal Advertising ID. Firefox, Safari, and others have dented Google’s web advertising business by blocking third-party cookies. Ad Topics is essentially Google’s way to create a new ad revenue stream to replace the increasingly less viable existing model.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 500th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

• The Google Play Store is trying to make it easier to find new apps and games, which is great because that’s been an obnoxious endeavor for Google Play’s entire existence. The new initiative is using Tiktok-style videos to highlight trending apps and games that are similar to Google Play’s editorial recommendations. Google also intends to cross-post them on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.
• Gboard is working on an AI-powered tool to fix grammar mistakes. The new feature, called Proofread, works similarly to Grammarly, but in a more aggressive way. It’ll even rewrite whole paragraphs for you. The feature is not new, as it first appeared in earlier beta versions of the keyboard, but it’s popped up again and it could appear in version 13.4 when it launches to the public.
• YouTube is testing out a Playables feature on YouTube. The feature allows people to play games on the platform on either desktop or mobile. The games seem to be casual in nature, so we’re not looking at another Google Stadia. Hit the link to learn more.
• The European Commission designated its first six gatekeeper companies as part of its Digital Markets Act. Those companies include Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Bytedance, Meta, and Microsoft. As such, several services from each one are going to start playing by a different set of rules from other services. That includes Chrome, Gmail, Google Play, and others. • Android 14’s official release was delayed by a month at the last minute. In fact, it was expected to launch this week. The reason is for security purposes. Google identified some security risks and is taking a month to fix them before officially launching the OS. Coincidentally, the new release date is slated for Oct. 4, which is the same date at the Pixel 8 launch.

There are just days left until the launch of the Apple iPhone 15 series, and while there’ll be plenty to dive into, it’s the transition from Lightning to USB-C that’s driving a lot of the pre-launch conversation. And with good reason. Finally, you’ll just need one plug for all your modern gadgets, whether that’s an iPhone, Android phone, GoPro, laptop, or virtually anything else.

The looming question is: How will Apple dress up the fact it was ultimately forced into this decision? If it even addresses the issue at all — it could even (erroneously) refer to the new port as Thunderbolt to avoid acknowledging USB-C altogether. Knowing Apple, the move will be all sunshine and upsides, and we’ll be left wondering why the company was ever so attached to Lightning in the first place (hoping we’ll forget all about the loss of accessory licensing revenue).

It’s one thing to watch a video of the Fairphone 5 being taken apart, it was another to hold it in my hand for the first time and realize how different it feels compared to today’s Android phones. It immediately reminded me of Nokia under its two identities: the good ol’ Nokia of customizable back covers and removable batteries, and the new HMD Nokia of pure Android and slightly utilitarian hardware designs.

Before even turning on the Fairphone 5, I popped open the transparent rear cover and took out the battery. It felt like I was thrown back in time to my first phone experience in 2003. Phones were designed around convenience and repairability then; you could take off the back and/or front frames and change your entire phone’s color for $20. Batteries lasted around a year, so you’d get a new one when the original battery started showing aging signs. And mom-and-pop shops were always ready with a couple of screwdrivers if you needed to fix something.

If you already own a Galaxy Watch 5, it’s not worth upgrading. The Galaxy Watch 6 Classic stands out a little more because of the returning rotating crown, but the Galaxy Watch 6 still offers the very best Wear OS experience, and for $100 less.
