Repairable smartphones need a futureproof processor too

The self-repairable Fairphone 5 has given us much to discuss, whether we’re missing the days of replaceable batteries or in awe at the phone’s best-in-class update policy and eco-credentials. But equally intriguing is the processor powering the phone — a previously unseen Qualcomm QCM6490.

Poking around Qualcomm’s documentation, the QCM6490 is built for IoT applications rather than phones. This explains the phone’s long-term support, as wireless products deployed in the field for many years need to remain secure. The Fairphone 5 will receive five years of Android OS updates and seven years of security patches. That eclipses the best smartphone update promises of four OS and five years of security, though the updates will arrive at a slower cadence.

Should you buy Apple Watch Series 9 or wait for the Watch X?

    0
Apple Event 2023 Apple Watch series 9 (5)
    Credit: Apple

Apple recently unveiled the Apple Watch Series 9 alongside the iPhone 15, offering a few improvements to the mix. It’s a fairly iterative release, but that’s to be expected. Although the Series 9 is a good watch in its own right, the rumor mill is already focused on what comes next. 2024’s Apple Watch X is expected to be a big deal.

Although the Apple Watch didn’t actually arrive until 2015, it was announced in 2014. This means the Apple Watch X will likely coincide with Apple’s 10th anniversary, even if technically the series didn’t become available until a year later. Should you buy the Apple Watch Series 9 or wait for the Watch X? Good question. While it’s way too early for a proper Apple Watch Series 9 vs Apple Watch X comparison, below we discuss whether it’s worth waiting and what the biggest differences are.

“Reduce, reuse, recycle,” goes the old adage, and it’s one that tech brands are increasingly embracing. At least if you read their marketing material. No doubt you’ll have spotted this trend at Apple’s latest iPhone 15 announcement, as well as during other high-profile flagship smartphone launches this year.

Apple’s literature boasts that the latest iPhone’s enclosure is built from 75% recycled aluminum with packaging made from 100% recycled or responsibly sourced wood fibers. Good stuff, but it can’t top the Watch Series 9’s claim to fame as Apple’s first-ever carbon-neutral product, thanks, in part, to using more recycled materials across the case and watch strap.

Exclusive: Google Pixel 9 processor won’t be the ambitious chip we hoped for

    0

When Google introduced its first Tensor chipset with the Pixel 6, its intentions were pretty clear: to grow independent of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon (or any other chipset vendor) and to build experiences that would otherwise be impossible. While we’re still waiting for the Pixel 8 series and its accompanying third-generation Tensor G3 processor, Google’s chips have already delivered some impressive features that would likely be impossible on other chipsets, especially in AI and image processing.

All of this, however, was somewhat undermined by the fact that Tensor chips have, so far, been designed in collaboration with Samsung. While they feature parts built by Google, major aspects of their design are derived from Samsung’s Exynos chips.

We’ve been getting hit with a number of Galaxy Fan Edition leaks and rumors over the last few weeks. Just this morning, we got a leak about the Galaxy S23 FE‘s color options. The latest FE leak, however, involves the Galaxy Buds FE and its price.

Well-known and reliable leaker, Roland Quandt, went onto X (formerly Twitter) to share some new information about the Galaxy Buds FE. According to the tipster, these earbuds will sell for $100, putting them squarely in the midrange area. This would make Samsung’s midrange earbuds about the same price as Google’s budget earbuds — the Pixel Buds A.

Yesterday, in a Korean forum, a user reported they found ring-like icons within the Galaxy Wearable app. Although it’s not a detailed representation of the smart ring, it does give us a rough idea of what the device will look like. In short, it looks like your average ring with no extra frills.

OnePlus could be working on a new smartwatch with Snapdragon W5 Gen 1

    0

Credit: Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority
    • A new leak suggests that OnePlus is working on a new smartwatch with the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 SoC, intended for global release.
    • This smartwatch could have eSIM support, fist clench gestures, and other health-tracking features.

OnePlus has some really exciting phones coming up in the form of the OnePlus Open and the OnePlus 12. But curiously, the company has shied away from putting its name on a proper smartwatch. There is the original OnePlus Watch and some fitness trackers, but all of them feature a basic OS that does not have its own app store. OnePlus could be planning to change this, as leaks around its next smartwatch have popped. And the big news is it could be a proper smartwatch this time.

Code sleuth and leaker @realMlgmXyysd has shared specifications of an upcoming smartwatch from OPLUS (the parent investor group company of OnePlus, OPPO, and Realme). This smartwatch could take shape as a OnePlus Watch and an OPPO Watch.

OnePlus Watch 4 Round leak 1

According to them, OPLUS has a smartwatch with the codename “star” in the works, with possible variants OWW231 for the Chinese market, OWWE231 for the Global market, and OPWWE231 for the Global market as a OnePlus branded product.

This OnePlus smartwatch is said to have a round display with a resolution of 466 x 466. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platform alongside the BES 2700 co-processor to handle lower-power operations. It is said to come in Black and White colors, though the hex code for the white has a pastel blue shade to it on a low alpha.

    OnePlus Watch basic rendering

Curiously, the system mentioned for the smartwatch is ColorOS for Watch 6.0 (likely for the Chinese model) and Android 11 Go. We’ve contacted the leaker for clarification, as Android Go is not generally used on smartwatches, and Google has a dedicated Wear OS platform that would work out much better.

The smartwatch’s hardware list includes two operation buttons, a crown, and a barometer. These would enable features like ECG, Always On Display, fist clench gestures, eSIM, blood oxygen measurement, stress tracking, sleep tracking, and workout tracking.

    OnePlus Watch clench fist gesture

We also get a sneak peek at the watch faces, the fist clench gesture, and a basic rendering of the body.

Features like ColorOS 14 Sound, RTOS WeChat, and WeChat Pay are also mentioned, though we believe these would likely be restricted to the Chinese market.

The leaker also mentions that there is a round-shaped OPPO Watch 4 Pro running Wear OS that is destined for the international market.

The presence of the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and eSIM support gives us much hope for the OnePlus smartwatch. If it does pan out, it will provide consumers with one more Android smartwatch option to compete against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series and the Google Pixel Watch 2. OPPO recently released the OPPO Watch 4 Pro (square-shaped) in China, which has similar specifications other than the shape, so we’re crossing our fingers for an international release.

    • The official OnePlus India account on X (formerly known as Twitter) hinted at the OnePlus Pad Go.
    • No other OnePlus accounts posted this teaser, leading us to believe the tablet could be an India exclusive.
    • The tablet has also only appeared in Indian regulatory bodies.

OnePlus launched its very first Android tablet earlier this year. In our review of the OnePlus Pad, we noted its unique design, including an interesting rear camera module. The Pad has a lot going for it, but it’s also pretty expensive. That’s why we were excited to see rumors that a cheaper variant is on the way.

Today, we have more evidence that the OnePlus Pad Go — the cheaper variant’s supposed name — is coming soon. The official OnePlus India account on X (the site formerly known as Twitter) posted a cryptic image of what appears to be the Pad Go. Check it out below:

One UI 5.1.1 is causing Pokemon Go to crash on Samsung Galaxy devices

    • Reports are coming in that One UI 5.1.1 is causing Pokemon Go to crash.
    • Developer Niantic has confirmed they are aware of the issue and are investigating.
    • Most of the devices that have been affected appear to be Galaxy S21 handsets.

It won’t be long before Samsung Galaxy owners can upgrade to One UI 6. But if you’re a Pokemon Go player, you may be hoping to make the jump sooner rather than later. It appears One UI 5.1.1 is causing the Pokemon Go app to crash.

Over the last few weeks, numerous Galaxy owners have been reporting problems with Pokemon Go on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). These users claim they are unable to log into their accounts, receiving pop-up messages like, “This account has failed to authenticate.” It appears the issue started only after these users updated their phones to One UI 5.1.1.

France could force Apple to recall every iPhone 12 over radiation concerns

    0

Credit: David Imel / Android Authority
    • France has ordered that Apple no longer sell the iPhone 12 in the country, as the phone exceeds its SAR limits.
    • The company needs to update existing iPhone 12 units to bring the SAR value within the limit. If it fails to do so within 15 days, France could order the company to recall the product, and actions could extend to Europe.
    • Apple has already stopped the sale of iPhone 12 as the iPhone 15 lineup has just launched.

Apple has just announced the new iPhone 15 series, finally switching to USB-C. Getting USB-C on the iPhone is crucial, as it would let the company continue selling its phones in the EU, where USB-C is set to become mandatory in 2024. However, the company seems to have run into some fresh trouble in the Old Continent, as sales of the older iPhone 12 have been halted in France over radiation concerns.

As announced by the Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR), Apple is no longer allowed to sell the iPhone 12 in France (h/t Frandroid). The country’s regulatory authority on radio frequencies has presented the company with a formal notice to withdraw the model from sale and to bring the iPhone 12 units already sold in the region into compliance. This is because the iPhone 12 exceeds the SAR limits specified by France’s regulations.

Apple quietly admits iPhone 15 series doesn’t improve on battery life

    Credit: Apple
    • Apple’s published specs tables for the iPhone 15 series show no improvements to battery life.
    • All phones should see about the same battery life as with the iPhone 14 series.
    • It is not clear if the battery capacities of the iPhones have changed.

With every iterative smartphone launch, there are a few predictable updates. The phone is almost always faster, has a better camera, and has at least one new software feature. Most of the time, it has better battery life, too, since that’s a primary concern for smartphone shoppers.

However, the just-launched iPhone 15 series doesn’t meet all those criteria. Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 battery life is projected to be the same as what we saw with the iPhone 14 series. We know this because Apple’s official iPhone comparison tool tells us so.

Double Tap brings Vision Pro’s coolest feature to the Apple Watch Series 9

    0
Apple Event 2023 Apple Watch double tap (3)
    Credit: Apple
    • During the Apple Watch Series 9 launch, Apple introduced a new Double Tap gesture control.
    • The feature allows users to complete simple on-device actions with just two fingers.
    • It will be available on the device via a software update next month.

Thanks to a powerful new Neural Engine, the Apple Watch Series 9 now offers users an even quicker way to interact with the wearable. The new Double Tap feature leverages the device’s health and fitness sensors to monitor users’ finger movements. Using data from its accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor, the watch learns to identify micro wrists movement and blood flow changes when a user taps their fingers. With a quick double tap of thumb and index fingers, users can now perform a handful of tasks. These actions include everything from playing music or snoozing an alarm, to answering or ending a phone call. Users can even double tap to open Smart Stack and scroll through widgets.

The feature should look familiar to anyone with experience with Apple’s Vision Pro. It’s very similar to the Vision Pro’s clicking gesture. The new feature is especially helpful in situations where users may only have one hand in free. Based on the promo video debuted during Apple’s Wanderlust event, that can be quite often. Whether your other hand is busy holding a coffee, or holding onto a climbing wall, Double Tap makes the device more accessible. It will be available on the new Series 9 in a software update next month.

    • This button cover appears to protect the Action Button that is rumored to be present on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple is going to launch the iPhone 15 series in a few hours from now. The most significant talking point this year will be USB-C on the iPhone, of course. However, the iPhone is also set to lose another beloved hardware feature: the mute switch. We’ve seen numerous leaks on how Apple could be on track to replace the hardware mute switch with a programmable “Action Button.” Just hours before the final reveal, we have another leak pointing towards the imminent departure of the mute switch.

Reputed case maker Spigen has teased a new upcoming iPhone case with the original colors of the Apple Watch Ultra. The post is captioned “something’s different 🧐…#AppleEvent.”
