If you’re in the market for an affordable flagship phone, the new Google Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S23 FE will undoubtedly be at the top of your shortlist.

Priced at $599 and $699, the two phones shave hundreds off the cost of entry compared to the premium Galaxy or iPhone series, yet they barely compromise the essential specifications. Both phones come equipped with great displays, solid camera setups, wireless charging, IP68 ratings, fast networking, and big batteries; essentially everything you’d want from a top-notch smartphone experience. That said, the phones trade down some aspects, such as older Gorilla Glass 5 protection and marginally weaker camera setups, to keep prices affordable compared to the top-end models. But those are certainly trade-offs we can live with.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 504th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Once again we bring you the latest news and apps from the previous week. Let’s start with some of the biggest headlines from last week:

• After several betas, Android 14 has finally arrived for eligible Pixel devices. The latest version of Android brings plenty of new features including improved device security, new accessibility features, and better integration with the Health Connect app. There are also a few Pixel 8 specific features in Android 14 including generative AI wallpapers.
• Generative AI continues to be a big buzzword, and now Google has announced it’s coming to the Fitbit app early next year. One of the core features here is the ability to find connections and correlations between your fitness data and then provide you insights. AI will also be used to provide personalized coaching and dynamic workout recommendations to ensure you are making progress on your goals. 
• Another one bites the dust. Google has announced plans to discontinue Google Podcasts, though the app will continue to work until “sometime in 2024”. The good news is Google is making it easy to migrate your podcast data over to another service. We can’t say we are too surprised, as Google has killed a lot of apps over the years. 
• TikTok recently started testing a new ad-free monthly subscription. The new plan costs $4.99 during the testing phase, but the final pricing could differ. Having an ad-free option is nice, though the shift towards paying for social networking apps is one we don’t completely love. 
• Meta has announced its new Meta AI virtual assistant is coming to WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. For now at least, the assistant will only be available in the US and in the English language. 
• Samsung is bringing mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs to Samsung Wallet. Iowa and Arizona are the first states to offer a mobile version of their driver’s license to residents, but more states are to follow. Samsung is also working with the TSA so it can accept mobile licenses at 25 federal airports.

A Steam Deck refresh could be coming soon

• Valve appears to have pushed a new Steam Deck through the  FCC’s certification process without anybody noticing.
• No one noticed until now because Valve snuck the device through using its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip vendor.
• The refreshed Steam Deck could have more to it than just a new Wi-Fi 6E chip.

Valve’s Steam Deck developers have made it painfully clear not to expect a Steam Deck 2 until at least 2025. But that doesn’t mean we can’t expect Valve to release a revised version of the current handheld PC. In fact, it looks like a refreshed Steam Deck snuck its way through the FCC not too long ago.

According to The Verge, a Steam Deck with a new model number stopped by the FCC back on August 13. That model number happens to be the same model number that was attached to a mystery Valve device that went through South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency — 1030.

By this point in the year, people are pretty sick of Pixel smartphones. Over the past few months, there has been a near-constant stream of leaks and rumors about the eighth-gen Pixels, to the point that we knew pretty much everything before Rick Osterloh even set foot on the Made by Google stage today. However, today is the first day we actually got to touch the Pixel 8 series, and that’s still pretty exciting.

In this article, I’m going to give you my hands-on impressions of both the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the latest Android smartphones from Google.

By this point in the year, people are pretty sick of Pixel smartphones. Over the past few months, there has been a near-constant stream of leaks and rumors about the eighth-gen Pixels, to the point that we knew pretty much everything before Rick Osterloh even set foot on the Made by Google stage today. However, today is the first day we actually got to touch the Pixel 8 series, and that’s still pretty exciting.

In this article, I’m going to give you my hands-on impressions of both the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the latest Android smartphones from Google.
