Since Google started offering the Messages for Web service, you’ve authenticated the connection between your phone and computer (or tablet) by scanning a QR code. Apple’s announcement earlier this year that it was foraying into the journaling app ecosystem was not entirely surprising; mental health and wellness are increasingly central to the company’s software decisions. The introduction of Mindfulness capture in Watch OS 10 and iOS 17 is just one way Apple hopes you’ll begin logging your mental wellbeing. Coupled with all the health data, it is possible to draw a correlation between, say, an elevated heart rate and mental stress levels. However, as someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression most of my life, I can confirm that capturing your current state of mind is only one part of the equation.

Journaling is an immensely personal activity that can help you relive moments or destress. Digital journaling makes it a lot more accessible.

However, when the phone actually went up for sale at Samsung.com, the unlocked model didn’t cost $599 — it cost $629, a $30 increase. This was unusual, so we contacted Samsung about the discrepancy.

In its response, the company pointed out that you can still get the phone from its online store for the $599 price — if you buy a carrier version over the unlocked model. It also told us that Amazon, Best Buy, and other retail partners still sell the unlocked model for $599. The only exception here is buying the unlocked model directly from Samsung. However, the company did not explain why it made this change.

In the United States, the population is split down the middle regarding mobile operating systems. On one half of the pie, you have iPhones, and on the other, you have Android phones. However, this refers to usage, not sales. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) showed last week that Android phones outsell iPhones yearly by a wide margin in the US.

We finally received confirmation of the Xiaomi 14‘s launch date on Monday. Today, the company revealed a first official look at the smartphone, including specific camera details.

Until now, we’ve only seen leaked renders of the Xiaomi 14 Pro and none of the baseline model. However, Xiaomi has now come forward with the renders of the latter.

Published on Weibo, the renders suggest that the Xiaomi 14 should share many aesthetic traits with its bigger sibling and predecessor. These include the iPhone-like flat metal sides and flat display. The Xiaomi 14 also features a punch-hole selfie camera in its 6.36-inch screen, and at its rear, a square camera array on its top left corner housing three lenses.

In another post, Xiaomi teased the specs of its main camera. The snapper will feature a 1/1.31-inch primary sensor with 1.2um pixels that can be binned up to 2.4um when required. Although Xiaomi teases that the sensor comes from a “new image sensor brand,” those specs closely align with Samsung’s 50MP GN1 used on the Pixel 7 series. The Xiaomi 13 employed the Sony IMX800, so it’s possible Xiaomi could be alluding to the switch from one sensor supplier to another.

As for the glass, a Leica Summulix lens with an f/1.6 aperture is quoted. This wider eye should allow access to more light than the Xiaomi 13’s primary camera, which uses an f/1.8 aperture lens.

Of course, we’ll only know how the Xiaomi 14’s cameras perform in practice once the device debuts. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long. The phone will break cover on October 26, but it’s fair to expect more teasers from its parent company before then.
