If you own an Android phone and a car, you may already know and use Android Auto. Android Auto brings apps from your smartphone to your car’s display, letting you focus on driving without distractions while taking care of your driving needs, like navigation and media playback. While Android Auto has plenty of apps for media playback, it has had a curious oversight for years that has remained unaddressed: You can’t play any local media connected to your car. But there’s good news on the horizon, as Google could soon fix the oversight.

Android Auto lets you play music via your phone, whether local media files stored on your phone or songs you stream from online services. However, if you have files stored locally on your car’s head unit or a USB thumb drive connected to your vehicle, then Android Auto cannot access or play these files. You will have to exit Android Auto and switch back to your car manufacturer’s entertainment system to access these files, which is the case with AM and FM playback, too.

French officials working on behalf of the country’s Office Mineurs (OFMIN, focused on the protection of minors) took Durov into custody based on accusations that Durov fails to curb illegal activity on Telegram, including the exploitation of children, fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and promotion of terrorism.

Now, anonymous sources speaking with AFP (via Yahoo News) say that France has apparently extended Durov’s detention beyond the initially expected 24 hours. France can do this several times — up to 96 hours of detention — without formally charging Durov. Eventually, France will either need to charge Durov or set him free when those 96 hours expire.

I’ve been using the Microsoft Surface Laptop (7th gen) for a couple of months now and am enjoying the Snapdragon X-powered experience for the most part. I can’t convey how much I hate subscriptions and the trend towards everything-as-a-service. Unfortunately, even today’s smartphone AI features aren’t going to be safe from monthly fees. But there’s no way in hell I’m paying for an AI subscription when I’m already paying for everything from YouTube Premium and big-name streaming services to Google One and gaming services.

I can’t convey how much I hate subscriptions and the trend towards everything-as-a-service. Unfortunately, even today’s smartphone AI features aren’t going to be safe from monthly fees. We’re almost two thirds of the way through 2024, and yet there’s only a single Android device that supports Qi2. Qi2, if you haven’t heard, is an evolution of the Qi wireless charging standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). The Qi2 standard was announced back in January 2023 and released in April 2023, but fast forward to today, and none of the major Android brands have released a Qi2-certified mobile device.

Or so we thought, until we learned that the Samsung Galaxy Ring is Qi2 certified. The Galaxy Ring is not only Samsung’s first smart ring product but also its first mobile device with Qi2 certification. We already knew from the launch event that the Galaxy Ring’s case can be wirelessly charged using Qi wireless charging, but we didn’t know until recently that the case is actually Qi2 certified. It finally feels like Google is ready for a Pixel Flip… next year

If you didn’t already know, I like flip phones. I’ve been using the Motorola Razr Plus (2024) and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 since they came out, and I’ve already theorized about what a flippable iPhone would look like. Now, it’s Google’s turn for my elevator pitch. I think it’s finally time for a Google Pixel Flip, but I think Google should probably wait until 2025 to launch it, and here’s why.

A software package identified as Showcase.apk appeared to leave handsets vulnerable to a number of different attack vectors, with no obvious way to remove it. Since news of this issue first surfaced, Google has been speaking out to clarify the serious limitations that help mitigate the potential impact of a Showcase exploit, while also committing to remove the software from affected Pixel phones.

Showcase, a Google spokesperson explained to Android Authority, is an app developed by Smith Micro for use as an internal Verizon demo, letting the carrier easily highlight phone features to shoppers in its stores. But while it’s not actively enabled on the Pixel phone you buy and take home, the software is still there — and this is what the researchers at iVerify discovered in their analysis. If it were to get switched on, there’s the possibility that an attacker could take advantage of insecurities in the app to gain control of your device — and because Showcase is granted a lot of permissions, there’s the potential for it to do real damage.

Garmin is one of those smartwatch companies that really likes using MIP LCD panels on its watches, but one of our biggest wishes for the Fenix 8 has been that it would move to an AMOLED display. Sharing the renders you see above, WinFuture attempts to confirm that change for both 47mm and 51mm variants. In his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that the iPhone SE (4th gen) should launch at the beginning of 2025. Rumors have suggested there could be a release early in the year, but something we weren’t expecting was a mention of Apple Intelligence support.
