    • It appears Xiaomi has changed its bootloader unlocking policy.
    • The new policy limits users to one unlock on one device each year.
    • Years ago, there was no limit, and only recently, Xiaomi had limited it to three unlocks per user per year.

Years ago, if you had an Android phone, you could unlock its bootloader. You could do this on virtually any device and do it as much as you liked. Over the years, though, some companies have tried to prevent users from doing this, whether through hardware/software on the device itself or through company-owned systems that “license” an unlock to the user.

It appears that Xiaomi recently changed its policy for unlocking device bootloaders. As first spotted by XiaomiTime, the company’s new policy is that users may unlock up to one device each year. Xiaomi is able to enforce this through an unlock licensing system.

Android is making it easier to connect a hearing aid to your phone (APK teardown)

    0
    • Google Fast Pair appears to be working on support for Bluetooth-compatible hearing aids.
    • This would build upon Android 15 improvements, including support for Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA).
    • Fast Pair also shows signs of progress towards supporting Bluetooth keyboards.

Technology has always played a big role in helping people who need a little hearing assistance, and that’s only kicked into high gear over the course of the past decade or so. Government regulators have lowered the bar for access to hearing aids, and the ubiquitous nature of Bluetooth support has made it simple to connect regular old headphones to pretty much whatever audio source you can think of. Right now we’re checking out what could be one of next ways Android tries to make life just a little easier for people who use hearing aids.

    • Samsung is expected to speed up fingerprint unlocking on the Galaxy S24 series with the One UI 7 update.
    • Fingerprint unlocking on the Galaxy S24 family has been widely criticized for being slower than tech found on competing devices.
    • A new One UI 7 beta is expected to land in the coming days, with the final release slated alongside the launch of the Galaxy S25 series.

If you have a Galaxy S24 series phone, you may be one of the many users who find fingerprint unlocking frustratingly slow. The ultrasonic sensor on the reigning Samsung flagships has been widely criticized for being slower than the tech found on competing devices. Thankfully, One UI 7 might finally fix the problem.

I recently moved, and just a couple of days ago, I made a post featuring all the smart home deals I took advantage of. Well, it seems I left a significant blind spot and needed another security camera. I went digging again and came upon another deal. The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro is only $89.99, which is a 50% discount on its full $179.99 price point. It is actually cheaper than the regular Stick Up Cam, which is $99.99! Yeah, I bought it!

Samsung’s new budget phone with 6 years of OS upgrades is just $199 in the US

    Credit: Samsung
    • The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G is coming to the United States on January 9, 2025.
    • This budget phone is notable for having a solid six-year support commitment.
    • You’ll be able to grab the device for just $199.

When Samsung started drastically extending its software support commitments to its phones — eventually landing on seven years for some — its newfound fervor for updates didn’t extend to its cheapest devices. This meant if you wanted a phone that would last you well into the 2030s, you needed to shell out big bucks.

Towards the end of 2024, that changed with the global announcement of the Samsung Galaxy A16 (in both 4G and 5G flavors). This phone promised six years of support, which is nearly as much as the Galaxy S24 series gets. Today, Samsung announced that the 5G version of the Galaxy A16 is coming to the United States on January 9 with a low price of just $199.

Google Nest Hub and Audio have gone suddenly dumb for me and many other users

    • Google’s Nest Hub and Audio have stopped responding to basic commands for many users.
    • The issue started a few days ago and is still ongoing.
    • Simple things like the weather or time make Assistant spin and load indefinitely, without providing any answer.

I returned from my Christmas vacation a few days ago to find that my Google smart speakers and displays have decided to completely ignore me. I was asking a simple question, “Hey Google, what’s the weather?” — the same question I’ve asked countless times before, but all I got was the animation loading for several minutes and no answer.

At first, I thought it was a geolocation issue, but the weather was showing up accurately on my Nest Hub’s display and giving me all the details if I manually clicked on it. It was just bugging out with voice commands.

AT&T FirstNet subscribers are getting the “gift” of a $3 price increase for the New Year

    0

Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
    • FirstNet is the first mobile service to raise pricing for 2025 it seems, as its pricing is going up by $3 starting January 15.
    • It appears that this increase wasn’t openly announced, though users spotted a notice for the increase within their bills.
    • Even with the increase, FirstNet is hard to beat. The AT&T-backed FirstNet service is designed to give first responders a high-quality, high-priority service for emergency use and beyond.

Mobile customers have become fairly used to mobile plans creeping upward in pricing bit by bit. Not only has the advertised price for postpaid service increased significantly over the last few years, but carriers have even started to nickel and dime customers with infrastructure fees that it raises without any warning beyond a small notice in your bill. Typically bigger plan changes are more openly announced but it appears that’s not always the case, at least not for the AT&T-backed FirstNet.

Redditor CustomerNo6626 noted the bottom of their bill indicated their FirstLine plan would see “a $3/month price increase starting January 15, 2025”. Other customers have since confirmed they are also seeing the increase.

Justice Department takes aim at popular fintech app over hidden fees

    0
Fintech app Dave is subject to a DOJ complaint.
Credit: C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
    • The US Department of Justice has filed an amended complaint against fintech app Dave.
    • The complaint alleges that Dave misled customers about potential cash advances of up to $500 and hidden fees.
    • Dave has disputed the claims and has amended its fee structures since the original complaint was filed.

At a time of year when family finances can get stretched to the limit, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) is taking action against one personal finance app. Fintech app Dave and its CEO, Jason Wilk, are the subject of a scathing amended complaint that accuses the company of misleading financially vulnerable consumers with empty promises and hidden fees.

According to the DOJ, as earlier reported by Reuters, Dave lured users with bold claims of cash advances “up to $500” — a figure most consumers reportedly never saw. Instead, the complaint alleges many users received far smaller amounts or nothing at all. Users were also often hit with unexpected charges, such as “express fees” for instant access to funds and so-called “tips” that Dave automatically deducted without clear user consent.

    • Polestar 2 vehicles have started getting a new P3.3.16 update.
    • The latest vehicle software adds support for wired Android Auto connections.
    • Drivers are free to switch between Auto and the built-in Automotive interface.

Android users who connect their smartphones to their cars have been enjoying a nice series of upgrades to round out the year, as Android Auto 13.4 delivers improvements like a refreshed media player and some colorful new screens across the UI. While Android Auto gets plenty of attention and new features like that, Android Automotive doesn’t move quite as swiftly, and the platform baked-in to cars like Polestar EVs is understandably a bit more locked-down than Auto. Luckily, Polestar owners are getting the best of both worlds, thanks to a new update that’s been heading out to drivers.

The Polestar 2 just got its version P3.3.16 update, and in addition to support for HD radio and improvements to low-speed driving, the new release delivers support for Android Auto. That means that rather than just using Android Automotive as Polestar’s configured it, drivers now have the freedom to connect their phones for a wired Android Auto connection.

Galaxy Z Flip FE hardware rumors hint at how Samsung will keep costs down

    0
    • Samsung has been rumored to be working on an FE version of its Galaxy Z Flip foldable.
    • Earlier reports suggested that the Z Flip FE might feature the same screen as the upcoming Z Flip 7.
    • Now the latest rumor claims that Samsung could give the Flip FE the Flip 6’s display, instead.

Samsung may be at a turning point in its approach to foldable smartphones. Up until this year, the company had kept things reasonably straightforward, iterating upon each prior generation for its Flip and Fold form factors. But all of a sudden, Samsung mixes things up with the introduction of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition, which ends up being a bit of a surprise hit — even as the company may be lowering its targets for foldables overall. Maybe the biggest shift in Samsung’s foldable strategy could concern the introduction of yet another new model, as rumors have circled around the possibility of a Galaxy Z Flip FE. Now we’re hearing a little more about how that hardware could come together.

The idea of what constitutes one of Samsung’s Galaxy FE models is kind of a moving target. Coming from “Fan Edition,” the label is supposed to highlight devices that include lots of customer-favorite features while also coming in at price points that are usually more competitive than the primary flagships.

Android 15’s Pixel notification dismissal sync may be about to lose this limitation (APK teardown)

    0
    • Android 15 introduced the option to “dismiss notifications across Pixel devices” in synchronized fashion.
    • In addition to being exclusive to Pixel hardware, the feature requires devices to be connected to Wi-Fi networks.
    • Google may soon offer the ability to sync dismissals even over mobile data.

Life with multiple devices, whether those are phones, tablets, or any mix you can think of, is a bit of a double-edged sword. While access to all that hardware can prove very convenient, it can get just the slightest bit annoying when we find ourselves moving between them and having to repeat the same tasks over and over — like keeping up with all of your notifications. With Android 15, Pixel hardware got a handy new trick for managing notifications across multiple devices, and now we’re uncovering evidence that it may soon evolve to become even more useful.

    • Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra hardware details have been revealed by way of files from an in-testing handset.
    • The S25 Ultra should feature UFS 4.0 storage and arrive with a 5,000mAh battery.
    • Screen resolution will go unchanged from the S24 Ultra, but we could get a bump to maximum brightness.

Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event is expected for late January, meaning that we’re likely less than a month away from getting to meet the Galaxy S25 family. And while we’ve already heard a lot about what we can probably expect, these last few weeks are going to be all about nailing down those remaining details. Today we’ve been crawling through some leaked Galaxy S25 Ultra files to see what they can tell us about the phone, confirming specifics like its support for seamless A/B updates. We’ve kept right on looking, and have spotted quite a few other important details about how this handset is shaping up to arrive.

The last thing you want to do with a new smartphone is lose it (well, either that, or break it), so you might be curious what kind of support the Galaxy S25 Ultra might have in place to help keep tabs on it. Unfortunately, we see the hardware declaring ro.bluetooth.finder.supported=false, which would indicate that the phone does not support Find My Device while powered down, like the Pixel 9 can do.

Apple TV Plus has a surprise planned for January 4 and 5

    • Apple TV Plus has a promotion planned for January 4 and 5.
    • The details are largely a mystery, but the tagline on the social media posts is “See for yourself.”
    • One possibility is that the streaming service could be made available to non-subscribers for the weekend.

As the holiday season winds up, streaming services will be brainstorming how they can keep you watching well into 2025. Apple TV Plus certainly has something planned, with a mysterious social media campaign promoting an event on January 4 and 5. The phrase being used as a lure is “See for yourself.”

Beyond this tagline, almost no further details are disclosed by the social media posts. Whether it’s a noteworthy promotion or not remains to be seen, but Apple certainly wants you to think it’s something big, posting a new version of the teaser each day for the last three days on X alone.

Gemini could soon give you more control over potentially unwanted output (APK teardown)

    0
    • Google could be about to give users new settings to control Gemini responses.
    • This “content filter” would presumably offer control over the extent to which Gemini censors itself.
    • The Gemini API already has settings for “harm categories” accessible to developers.

Artificial intelligence has been working its way into practically everything this past year, and when it comes to AI and Google, Gemini is the name of the game. The company’s been working hard at improving its models, and earlier this month announced Gemini 2.0. Because of the sort of power AI offers, companies like Google dedicate a lot of time to thinking about the sort of protections their AI systems need to have in place. Right now, we’re taking a look at a new way that Gemini may soon give users more control over the sort of content it generates.

One of Android’s best 2024 features is finally arriving on Nothing phones

    0
    • Nothing smartphones started receiving Android 15 via Nothing OS 3.0 stable earlier this month.
    • Devices that have upgraded can now begin taking advantage of Circle to Search.
    • Circle to Search is also available in beta on the Nothing Phone 2a Plus.

We’re just days away from the end of 2024, and despite the fact that Android 16 already has its second Developer Preview ready for you to test, the vast majority of phones haven’t even gotten Android 15 yet. As manufacturers like Samsung take their time with a very deliberate, controlled, and ultimately slow approach to their beta testing, more agile players like Nothing have been able to grab a little spotlight with stable Android 15 for their own phones. Nothing OS 3.0 has been available for the company’s latest handsets for a bit over a week now, and today we’re learning about one more feature that’s making its arrival.

Circle to Search has emerged as one of the year’s most low-key useful Android tools, and after early availability on Samsung and Google smartphones, it’s been getting ready to spread to more and more. Following the release of OS 3.0, Nothing now shares that Circle to Search is available on the Nothing Phone 2, Phone 2a, and Phone 2a Plus.

    • The Galaxy Ring 2 is rumored to have an earlier release, but there’s no confirmed date yet.

One UI 7 lets you stop HDR photos from making your screen super bright

    0
    • One UI 7 will let you stop HDR photos from making your Galaxy phone’s screen become super bright.
    • This is because the “Super HDR” toggle in One UI 7 now works system-wide instead of only in the Samsung Gallery app.
    • The new location of the “Super HDR” toggle in One UI 7 is under Settings > Advanced features.

To fully appreciate the benefits of HDR photography, you need to have a device with an HDR-capable display. When viewed on such a display, HDR photos reveal greater detail in both the highlights and shadows. However, accurately reproducing this extended dynamic range often requires the display to significantly increase its brightness. This sudden shift in brightness can be jarring, especially when browsing social media at night. As a result, some users have been looking for ways to temporarily stop their Android phones from displaying HDR content, but the Android OS doesn’t offer such an option. Samsung is thankfully addressing this issue on its own in its upcoming One UI 7 update for Galaxy devices.

One UI 7 will make it easier to filter notifications that aren’t important

    0
    • The latest One UI 7 beta release has added a new “filter notifications” feature.
    • This feature filters notifications that are less important to you and shows them as a group at the bottom of the notifications panel.
    • You can choose to filter old notifications, notifications for background activities, and minimized notifications.

While notifications are essential for staying connected, many apps send notifications that aren’t important to you (like advertisements), cluttering the notification panel. Some apps post notifications simply to prevent Android from killing their background processes. The upcoming One UI 7 update for Samsung Galaxy devices will introduce a new feature to address this problem: notification filtering.

While digging through the most recent One UI 7 beta 2 update on his Galaxy S24, Reddit user FragmentedChicken discovered the new filter notifications feature under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings. This setting “filter[s] notifications that are less important to you and show[s] them as a group at the bottom of your notification panel.”

This brand-new chip has no little cores, could beat Snapdragon in mid-range phones

    • MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 8400 smartphone processor.
    • This is the first mid-range chipset without little CPU cores, using eight Cortex-A725 cores instead.
    • The first phones with the Dimensity 8400 are set to launch before the end off the year.

MediaTek has done a solid job over the years when it comes to chipsets for cheap Android phones, although Qualcomm has upped its game in recent years. Now, the Taiwanese chipmaker has announced what could be its most impressive mid-range chip in a long time.

MediaTek has revealed the Dimensity 8400 processor and the standout feature here might be the CPU. The chipset lacks little CPU cores altogether, featuring eight Cortex-A725 cores clocked at up to 3.25GHz. This approach is broadly similar to the latest flagship Android chips, which have dropped little cores as well. But it’s the first time we’ve seen this trend on a mid-range processor.
