Google to cut subscription service fees for all Play Store creators

    • Google is reducing its Play Store subscription fee for developers.
    • Developers will pay 15% of their cut to Google, down from the 30% currently demanded in certain situations.
    • The changes come into effect from January 1, 2022.

Google has announced it will take a smaller cut from developers’ Play Store subscription fees starting next year.

As outlined in a new blog post, Google will demand 15% of developers’ subscription fees on the Play Store “from day one.” Currently, the company takes a 15% cut from developers only if consumers hold on to a subscription for an entire year. If a consumer unsubscribes before this period, this fee for developers jumps to 30%. Understandably, that’s a pretty tough target for budding developers. Google now acknowledges this, citing “customer churn” as a significant problem. But it believes its new guidelines, which will come into effect on January 1, 2022, should ease the pressure on budding developers.

It’s 2021 and Samsung is still the foldable phone king thanks to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 and their wide availability. Xiaomi and Huawei have also launched foldables though, and a new leak suggests Oppo will join the party as soon as next month.

Update: October 22, 2021 (8 AM ET): We’ve updated our PUBG: New State hub with confirmed release date details. Read on for the latest.

Original article: The original PUBG — aka PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds — is credited with kickstarting the battle royale video games trend. Tencent eventually ported PUBG to mobile devices with the appropriately titled PUBG: Mobile. Now, there’s a new game on the way called PUBG: New State.

    Credit: PUBG
    • PUBG: New State will launch in a stable form on November 11, 2021.
    • The game will land on both Android and iOS in over 200 countries.
    • There will be a final beta test for selected users at the end of this month.

Although Fortnite seems to be what everyone’s talking about nowadays, it’s important to remember that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — aka PUBG — started the whole battle royale craze. Now, a new game from the original studio behind PUBG is finally coming in a stable form to Android.

PUBG: New State is a game that takes place in a different era of the PUBG universe. Most importantly, though, it’s coming from Krafton, Inc., and not Tencent. Krafton is the team that created the original PC game while Tencent headed up the mobile version of that title. In other words, this is the first mobile-only title from the original creators of the series.

The Google Pixel 5 was released in the fall of 2020 and despite its flagship lineage, it had a lot in common with upper mid-range smartphones, both in terms of its hardware and price. Its successors, the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, offer massive changes for the Pixel lineup in design, hardware, and software. Yet, they are still very affordable phones despite sporting better hardware than the Pixel 5. If you still have the year-old Pixel 5, is it time for an upgrade? Let’s find out in this battle between the Google Pixel 6 vs Pixel 5.

While there’s a lot of new interesting technology packed into the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, including a 120Hz LTPO display on the latter and custom Tensor processor, the improvement many will be interested in is the new camera setup. Google’s phones have always taken good photos but more recent models have fallen behind market leaders due to aging hardware.

That’s because Google refused to change much of its imaging setup since the original Pixel in 2016. Even the Pixel 5a, which launched earlier in 2021, uses a virtually unchanged sensor from 2017’s Pixel 2. Granted, the company has experimented with ultra-wide and telephoto lenses in the interim, but these implementations have been far from cutting edge.

    • The smartwatch comes with Huawei’s new TruSeen 5.0 Plus heart rate sensor, running ability evaluations, and more fitness features.
    • Available in two sizes, the Huawei Watch 3 will be available starting at €229.

The smartwatch landscape is heating up. Apple’s Watch Series 7 offers significant design improvements, and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 is an excellent showcase of the new Wear OS. Huawei hopes to be another contender in the high-end space with the new Huawei Watch GT 3.

The GT 3 comes in two sizes, and there are quite a few differences in hardware depending on which model you choose. The larger 46mm model has a 1.43-inch AMOLED display with a high resolution of 466 x 466. It’s just 11mm thick and weighs 42.6g without the strap. You’ll get better battery life out of this model, as it’s supposedly able to last up to 14 days with “typical” use or eight days with heavy use.

Apple iPad Mini (2021) review: This one’s just right

In years past, the iPad Mini has always fit into a strange nook in Apple’s iPad lineup. It didn’t feature the most powerful processor, it didn’t support the latest accessories, and it took design cues from Apple devices that were already several years old. The only truly unique selling point was its size.

With the release of the 2021 sixth generation iPad Mini, Apple has flipped the script. It keeps the same small footprint, but packs some features that are only found on the high-end iPad Pro models.

Since the dawn of time (okay, it’s only been a few years), Google Pixel Watch rumors have been circulating around the proverbial rumor mill. I don’t even remember when the first Pixel Watch rumors came to be, but since that time, we’ve still seen no real, believable evidence that a Pixel Watch even exists. So why does the internet continue to go crazy about Google releasing a first-party smartwatch?

There may be reasons for a Pixel Watch to exist, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. Google has other plans for its significant wearables push in the next few years. Just because we all want one doesn’t mean it’s the right move for Google.
