Apple may be late to the smart display game, but that’s OK

    Opinion post by
    Roger Fingas

If you haven’t heard, Apple is strongly rumored to be getting into smart displays, a field so far dominated by Amazon and Google with products like the Echo Show 8 and the Nest Hub. Assuming a product ships by the end of 2022, Apple will be even later with displays than it was with smart speakers ― this fall will mark five years since the debut of Amazon’s Echo Spot and first-gen Echo Show. By comparison, the first HomePod debuted in February 2018, a little less than four years after the original Amazon Echo.

I’m here to argue that while Apple is definitely late to the party, it is poised to gain a foothold in the market, even if the model people really want may follow a year or two later.

Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL rear
    Opinion post by
    C. Scott Brown

Believe it or not, May 2022 marks the three-year anniversary of Google launching the Pixel 3a series. That means there won’t be any more Google Pixel 3a updates going forward (although Google could have one more this month, maybe). The phones will still work just fine, but the lack of future Android security updates makes them insecure. It would be advisable for users to upgrade.

While this day wasn’t unexpected, it’s still a bit sad. The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL represented a seismic shift for the Pixel brand. You can draw a straight line from the success of the Pixel 3a to the failure of the Pixel 4 and back to the success of the Pixel 6 series. Without any hyperbole, this phone completely altered Google’s smartphone portfolio.

Android’s fallen rivals revisited: Windows 10 Mobile

Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

Android has had many rivals over the past decade and more since its inception, but only iOS has presented a major alternative to Google’s platform (arriving before Android in the first place). One of the most prominent rivals in the 2010s was Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, which eventually evolved into Windows 10 Mobile.

It goes without saying that Microsoft’s platform eventually fell by the wayside. It was finally abandoned in 2019. But that doesn’t mean that the failed OS didn’t leave an impression on the industry. So what is there to know about it? What was it like at the time and in 2022? Did it do anything better or worse than Android today? We’ll answer all this and more in this, our Windows 10 Mobile retrospective.

The Huawei Band 7 is a discrete smartwatch that’s ideal for individuals who want something small and light. The watch comes in at a mere 16g, and measures a svelte 9.99mm thick. The screen is a 1.47-inch AMOLED display with ultra-narrow bezels. Despite being thinner than many competitors’ watch bands alone, the Band 7 still provides enough power for two weeks of average use.

Updated, April 27, 2022 (05:12 PM ET): CNN Plus will be shutting down two days earlier than originally announced, on April 28, 2022.

CNN Plus was the cable news network’s high-stakes attempt at a streaming service. Ultimately, it failed to gain much traction and was slated to shut down just one month after launch. According to a CNN Help Center webpage, however, the shutdown date has been moved from April 30 to April 28, with active customers receiving a full refund.
