    • A Korean outlet has claimed that Samsung is readying a Galaxy-exclusive SoC for 2025.
    • The outlet adds that there won’t be in-house processors for Galaxy phones in 2023 and 2024.
    • It’s unclear how this Galaxy-exclusive chipset will differ from current Exynos offerings, though.

We read a shaky report last week suggesting that Samsung is working on a Galaxy-exclusive chipset for 2025, but it left many questions unanswered. Now, another outlet has echoed this news while also making wild claims of its own.

Korea’s Naver outlet (h/t: Neowin) reports that Samsung will launch a joint task force of roughly 1,000 people in July with the aim of commercializing a Galaxy-only chipset by 2025. It’s claimed Samsung also has the goal of surpassing Apple Silicon.

Google is on the right path for watches and tablets, but there’s more to do

    Opinion post by
    Roger Fingas

It’s no secret that Google is trying to reduce its dependence on ads by pushing ever further into hardware, including Pixel phones and earbuds, and its Google Nest smart home gear. At the same time, though, there are a couple of areas that the company has struggled to get any traction in: smartwatches and tablets. There hasn’t been a first-party Wear OS device, and Google’s most popular tablet was probably the decade-old Nexus 7.

The Pixel Watch and Pixel Tablet, revealed at I/O 2022, seem to suggest that Google is headed in the right direction, at least when coupled with general improvements to Android and Wear OS. But there’s a difference between good odds and going all the way, so here are some things we think Google needs in order to succeed in both the tablet and watch markets.

Google Glass was the company’s first foray into smart eyewear back in 2012/2013, touting features like a projector-driven display, touchpad, camera for photos and video recording, bone conduction audio, and voice commands. It certainly made for an innovative but ultimately unsuccessful first try, eventually finding a small niche for itself in the business world.

It looks like Google isn’t giving up on consumer-oriented smart glasses just yet, as it demonstrated a prototype for an unnamed pair of glasses at its I/O 2022 developer conference. The new glasses seem similar to the spectacles touted by startup Focal, which was acquired by Google in 2020, with the search giant demonstrating live translations and real-time transcriptions.

Google flooded I/O 2022 with hardware announcements. While we were already expecting to see the Pixel 6a and the Pixel Watch, we were surprised by the promised return to the tablet ecosystem with the Pixel Tablet. Google now has its fingers in many different pies, from smartphones to earbuds, tablets to smartwatches, smart home devices to laptops, and possibly even foldable devices sometime in the future.

It begs the question: Is Google getting ahead of itself by pushing into new product categories all at once? Or is it finally getting serious about creating a cohesive ecosystem, one that it’ll be able to nail down to a T? Android Authority‘s Adamya and Rita present both sides of the argument.
