Working Typing Latop Outside

If you work as a writer or you’ve been looking around for some side work, you’ve probably heard the term “copywriting.” However, it’s not the same as many other forms of writing. So what is copywriting?

In a nutshell, copywriting is the art of writing for web pages, ads, or other publications to drive sales. We do it every day here at Android Authority, highlighting deals you might like and helping us keep the lights on. Where a sales team often contacts one person at a time, a copywriter can reach an entire audience with a single post.

If you’re curious, we’ve got some tips about how you can quickly get started in copywriting.

What is copywriting?

A company’s digital marketing plan includes elements of design, SEO, and content marketing, but copywriting is what ties it all together. You need the right words to make sure you get your point across. Becoming a copywriter is the easy part as you don’t need much training to get started. However, it can be tougher to become a skilled copywriter. Our tips may help.

Know the product you’re writing about

When you’re trying to drive sales, you have to know exactly what you want to emphasize. For me, that means doing a little bit of research into every product in every deal that I write about. If you’re selling your own product, you already have an advantage because you know the best selling points, but you still need to highlight them effectively.

Know who your customers are

You may know your product inside and out, but what about the people who are going to buy it? They’re just as important as the product because they’re the ones with the money. You have to make sure that your copy fits the needs of your audience. If the product has less prominent features that will nevertheless appeal more to your particular audience, those are the features to highlight.

Write attention-grabbing headlines

This one should come as no surprise. Writing good headlines is one of the most important ways to get attention. As your audience browses the web, the headline might be the only thing they read. It helps to be unique so that it stands out from the rest, and also specific enough that the reader knows what they’re getting. A vague headline won’t draw people in if they can’t immediately see what you’re offering.

Establish a sense of value

People don’t stay on web pages very long if they aren’t immediately interested in the content. Therefore, you should follow your headline with something that intrigues your audience. If you’re selling a product, hit the main selling point of that product. If you’re selling a complex-sounding service, quickly boil it down to the benefits to the customer. You can get into the details later when the reader is hooked.

End with a strong call to action

Often shortened to CTA, the call to action is what you want your audience to do next. It’s usually to get the reader onto a product page where they can purchase something. However, some people use copy to drive newsletter signups or schedule appointments. It’s important to get your wording just right so that you draw people in without sounding too pushy.
