We first heard about Huawei’s plans to build a Google Maps alternative in August last year. At the time, the company released a set of mapping tools for developers instead of a full-fledged navigation app. This was followed by reports of Huawei working with TomTom to possibly create its very own navigation service.

Now, the long-awaited Google Maps alternative for Huawei phones is finally here, and it’s not made by Huawei or TomTom. The app is called Here WeGo, and is available on the Huawei App Gallery across both Huawei and Honor phones.

A product of Here Technologies, the Here WeGo app is not really a new app and has been around since 2013. It’s also not exclusive to Huawei’s App Gallery and is available on the Google Play Store with over 10 million installs.

The app promises to cover all your basic mapping needs including turn-by-turn navigation, live traffic updates, taxi bookings, public transport information, journey planning, and more.

It’s available in more than 1,300 cities including New York, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Munich, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Toronto, Sydney, and many more. It also has offline maps available in 100+ countries, including US, UK, Germany, France, Canada, and others.

We checked for the Here WeGo app on our Huawei P40 Pro unit in London and it seems to work just fine, at least on first impressions.

Huawei users finally have a decent alternative to Google Maps, which, along with many other Google apps, is absent from Huawei phones due to the ongoing US ban against the company. The new navigation app might not be as efficient as Google’s version, but at least it’ll do until Google services are restored on Huawei phones. For now, there are no signs of that happening anytime soon.

You can download Here WeGo by visiting this link from your Huawei and Honor phones.
