Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro review: Ready for adventure

    0

Samsung’s latest flagship watches bring changes big and small. The biggest change, however, is that the series now includes a truly premium model: the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

Building on the success of the Galaxy Watch 4, both the Galaxy Watch 5 base and Pro models exhibit incremental improvements and a lot of shared specs. Yet whether it’s the stronger sapphire glass and titanium build, much larger battery, exclusive tracking features, or the fancier buckle, the Pro model packs plenty extra to set itself apart from its predecessors and its non-Pro sibling. The cost? A higher price and the ditching a fan favorite that might disappoint you. In short, there’s a lot to chew on before loading one into your shopping cart. Find out more in our Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro review.

What is Amazon Music? Here’s everything you need to know in 2022

    0

Amazon is more than an online shopping platform. The company offers plenty of other services including Amazon Music, which is a music streaming platform that rivals the likes of Spotify and YouTube Music. And while Amazon Music doesn’t have the same appeal as a lot of its rivals, there is plenty to like about it.

We’ll take a look at what it has to offer in detail and determine if it’s worth signing up for an account.

Size matters: This Samsung gaming monitor is bigger than most TVs

    0
    Samsung Odyssey Ark CES 2022
    Credit: Samsung
    • The Odyssey Ark will be Samsung’s largest gaming monitor at 55 inches.
    • It will have a 4K resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, and a one millisecond response time.
    • The Odyssey Ark will launch in September for $3,500.

Samsung makes some of the biggest gaming monitors on the market today with its largest being a whopping 49 inches. But 49 inches will seem quaint compared to its new 55-inch Odyssey Ark.

First revealed earlier this year at CES, the Odyssey Ark uses a quantum mini-LED panel with a 1000R curve. That display offers a 4K resolution and HDR10+ along with a 165Hz refresh rate and one millisecond response time. This means gamers will get a crystal clear picture without needing to worry about lag getting in the way of their gaming experience.

House of the Dragon vs Rings of Power

Fantasy fans have a lot of TV to look forward to as we enter the final stretch of 2022. HBO is launching its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon (which you can stream on HBO Max), and soon after that, Amazon is taking us back to Middle Earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Prime Video. So, it’s House of the Dragon vs The Rings of Power. Which are you most excited for?

Nothing is stopping you from watching and enjoying both, of course. Have your cake and eat it too! But a little healthy competition can be fun too.

Google may make pairing Wear OS watches with new phones less of a headache

    • An APK teardown of Google Play Services revealed new details related to Wear OS smartwatches.
    • The lines of code suggest Google may allow users to backup smartwatch data when switching to a new phone.
    • Since users currently have to factory reset their Wear OS watches to pair with new devices, this would solve a lot of headaches.

Do you dread the idea of pairing your Wear OS smartwatch with new devices? Well, you may not have to feel that way much longer as Google could be working on a way to backup smartwatch data when switching to a new phone.

In a recent APK teardown, conducted by XDA Developers, of the Google Play Services v22.32.12 beta, new details related to Wear OS were discovered. In the code, it was found that a future update may include a feature that allows users to backup Wear OS data before pairing with a new device.

The Pixel Watch could be Google Fi’s first supported smartwatch

    • An app teardown has revealed that the Pixel Watch could be supported on Google Fi.
    • This would make it the first smartwatch to be supported by the carrier.

Google announced the Pixel Watch earlier this year, and there’s plenty to know about the watch ahead of its proper launch later this year. However, some code sleuthing has revealed that the new smartwatch could support Google Fi too.

9to5Google dug into version 69 of the Google Fi app, finding multiple references to a product code-named Rohan. Of course, this is the code name for the Pixel Watch. The outlet suggests that you’ll therefore be able to either buy the smartwatch via Google Fi or add a previously acquired watch to your Google Fi plan.

Snap gave up on its selfie drone so fast it’ll make your head spin

    • Snap released its easy-to-use selfie drone on April 28, 2022.
    • Four months later, Snap has decided to discontinue the device.
    • Snap attributes the cancellation to reprioritizing the company’s resources.

Cancellations happen all the time in the tech world, but it’s always surprising when a product gets canceled shortly after its release. That’s exactly what happened with Snap and its selfie drone, the Pixy.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Snap held a question-and-answer session addressing company decisions. During the session, Snap Chief Executive, Evan Spiegel, told staff that the company would be halting the development of the $250 drone. Spiegel attributes the surprising decision as a part of a broader reprioritization of company resources.

The OnePlus 10T fares little better than OnePlus 10 Pro in bend test

    0
    • The OnePlus 10T has been subjected to a durability test by YouTuber JerryRigEverything.
    • It turns out that the phone easily bent in the YouTuber’s bend test.
    • However, it looks like the OnePlus 10T fared a little better than the OnePlus 10 Pro.

The OnePlus 10 Pro made headlines for all the wrong reasons earlier this year when it broke in half during a bend test by noted YouTuber JerryRigEverything. Now, it’s the brand-new OnePlus 10T‘s turn to undergo durability tests, and it isn’t good news.

JerryRigEverything ran through the usual tests in a video uploaded to YouTube, but the bend test is the one that caught our attention. The OnePlus 10T initially didn’t suffer any damage when bent with the thumbs on the back of the phone, which is an improvement over the Pro model. But bending the phone with thumbs on the screen resulted in a slight bend and crack. The YouTuber continued to apply more pressure, with the plastic frame cleanly breaking.

The Pixel 6 Pro gains a long-overdue display feature with new mod

    • A new mod has brought the ability to adjust display resolutions to the Pixel 6 Pro.
    • The mod is made possible thanks to Android 13 officially supporting display resolution adjustments.

Android OEMs have offered the ability to change display resolutions for years now, but this wasn’t actually supported by stock Android. Fortunately, Android 13 finally brings this feature, and a developer has managed to unofficially bring it to the Pixel 6 Pro.

XDA developer Freak07 has updated their Kirisakura-Kernel mod so Pixel 6 Pro users on stable Android 13 can switch from the native QHD+ screen resolution to FHD+ instead (h/t: XDA-Developers and Mishaal Rahman).

Did you get Android 12 instead of Android 13? Google says it wasn’t a mistake.

    • Google has reportedly responded after some Pixels received Android 12 instead of Android 13.
    • The company says it didn’t make a mistake and that this update was indeed intentional.
    • The Pixel maker says it’ll tweak the messaging in the Android 12 update notification.

Google started pushing out Android 13 to supported Pixel devices this week, but it turns out some Pixel owners were prompted to install an Android 12 update rather than the brand-new update.

Even the best under-display cameras are garbage, here’s the proof

    0
ZTE Axon 40 Ultra under display selfie camera in light
Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

ZTE was the first major brand to release a smartphone with an under-display selfie camera with the Axon 20 5G back in 2020. We thought results from this first-generation effort left a lot to be desired, but the company has stuck with the tech nonetheless. Other brands have joined in with similar results: We didn’t think much of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3’s under-display camera, and we doubt the Galaxy Z Fold 4‘s is any better.

ZTE is now on its third generation of under-display selfie cameras with the Axon 40 Ultra, which was released globally a few months ago. Even so, we slated the selfie camera’s image quality once again — it’s clearly inferior to conventional selfie cameras on flagship smartphones. This disparity isn’t a surprise as the very technology that enables under-display selfie cameras introduces all sorts of issues.

Poco M4 announced: Almost everything you need in a budget phone

    0
    Poco M4 5G yellow official
    Credit: Supplied by Poco

Poco is no stranger to offering great value-for-money smartphones, as mid-tier devices like the Poco F4 and Poco X3 Pro delivered solid bang for buck in the last year or two. The company has also offered its low-end Poco M series for a while now, and it’s back with another entry.

The Poco M4 is the Xiaomi-affiliated brand’s latest M-series phone, and the first thing you’ll notice about it is the rather interesting rear design. Expect a matte polycarbonate back in blue, yellow, or black, along with a black polycarbonate camera window stretching across to the left and right edges. Otherwise, a flat panel is available up-front along with a waterdrop notch and a fairly substantial chin.

🥶 Greetings and welcome back to the Daily Authority. We hope you had a great weekend! Unlike my colleagues in the global north (and like many of you, dear readers), I just experienced one of the coldest nights of the year. But don’t worry, soon I’ll be the one complaining about excessive heat. And no, I’m not looking forward to it.

    Bye-bye, Google account
