Soon Chrome will force you to upgrade from Windows 7

    0
Google Chrome logo stock photo 2

    • Google’s Chrome browser is leaving Windows 7 and 8.1 behind.
    • To access new versions of Google’s Chrome browser, users will have to upgrade to Windows 10 or 11.
    • The next upgrade for the Chrome browser is expected to arrive in February 2023.

If you’re still on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, it may be time for you to update. Google has decided enough is enough and is ending Chrome support for the out-of-date versions of Microsoft’s operating system.

When new updates come out, some people like to install updates right away, others like to wait, and some choose not to update at all. This is particularly the case with major operating system version updates. For those who are still sticking it out with Windows 7 or 8.1, it looks like Google is going to force you to make a choice.

Daily Authority: 😱 Spooky season streaming

    0

👻 Good morning, and welcome to the Daily Authority! I had a great weekend, but I swear they get a little shorter every month.

Today’s newsletter is for movie lovers, specifically spooky movie lovers. Next week is Halloween, so there’s no better time to stock up on confectionery and plan your horror movie playlists. Android Authority‘s streaming team has been hard at work seeking out the greatest spooky flicks ever made. Find a small sample of those lists below.

    Spooky season streaming

    alien

    Credit: 20th Century Fox

    This is Ripley

    • First off, no sci-fi horror movie list is complete without Alien.
    • The 1979 Ridley Scott-directed flick locks an angry alien in a spaceship with an ill-prepared crew.
    • We love Sigourney Weaver’s performance as Ellen Ripley and the titular alien’s Lovecraftian design.
    • There have been plenty of sequels and spinoffs to date. We’d shout out to the 1986 James Cameron follow-up and the 2014 survival horror game Alien: Isolation as two properties worth experiencing.
    • However, few movies have come close to challenging Alien as one of the most frightening flicks.
    • Catch the movie on Starz.

    He’s got an arm off

    • If Alien is too intense for you, try Shaun of the Dead.
    • Grounded in George A. Romero’s zombieverse, directed by Edgar Wright, and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, this movie packs everything.
    • In brief, the drunken and irresponsible Shaun faces an existential crisis when his girlfriend ends their relationship just before the zombie apocalypse.
    • Faced with a rare sense of duty, he journeys to save her, his family, and his friends from jagged jaws.
    • Character arcs are tight, the screenplay is riveting, and the humor breaks the tension at just the right moments.
    • We’d recommend viewing the two accompanying Cornetto Trilogy films: Hot Fuzz and At World’s End.
    • Catch the flick on Peacock.

    Sorry, but you’re infected

    • Battling zombies in a pub isn’t too bad, but what about a high-speed train?
    • Train to Busan imagines this exact scenario.
    • This 2016 South Korean flick stars Gong Yu (The Silent Sea, Squid Game) as a father trying desperately to reconnect with his daughter.
    • But while on a train from Seoul to Busan, the occupants rapidly morph into zombies, threatening their lives.
    • It’s a great flick with swift action sequences and a heart-wrenching ending.
    • Directed Yeon Sang-ho went on to direct the 2020 sequel Peninsula and Netflix‘s Hellbound, which is due for a second season in 2023.
    • Catch Train to Busan on The Roku Channel.

    I want more!

    • Once you plow your way through these flicks, you’ll probably be hungry for more.
    • But be sure to view our full list of the best sci-fi horror movies and best zombie movies at the respective links.

TikTok vs YouTube Shorts vs Instagram/Facebook Reels

    0

Bite-sized videos are a huge thing on the Internet these days. The trend started with TikTok and has expanded to YouTube, Instagram, and a few other places. It’s so popular that TikTok overtook Google as the number one most popular website in 2021. People seem to really like them, and it doesn’t seem like a passing trend anymore. It’s true that Vine and other services started the short video trend, but none of them have seen the success of TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Facebook Reels, and Instagram Reels.

No matter which platform you choose, you get the same kind of stuff. Short videos that you can scroll through quickly and share with your friends. We’ll take a look at the three biggest platforms and see if any of them stand out from the others.

One year later, have developers warmed to Google’s Material You overhaul?

    0

Credit: Ryan Whitwam / Android Authority

Android updates aren’t as exciting as they once were, but there’s still some fun to be had if you’re patient. Google began the process of overhauling the Android UI with Material You in Android 12, and the process continued in Android 13. As with so many changes over the years, Material You will only reach its full potential with buy-in from developers — this has long been Google’s Achilles’ heel. There’s reason to be optimistic about Material You, but it’s too soon to call it a success. Some pieces of the puzzle are still missing, and they may never slot into place the way Google envisions.

There were plenty of reasons to be skeptical of Material You’s success right out of the gate. Google rolled out Android 12 on the Pixels with good but not great first-party support. Most of Google’s apps supported the basic theme options, but some stragglers took a few months to catch up.

The Pixel 7’s colors make me wish Google brought back Moto Maker

    0

Credit: Rita El Khoury / Android Authority
    Opinion post by
    Calvin Wankhede

You’ve probably heard it a million times already but I’ll complain about it again — smartphone design has become a bit boring. That’s especially true in the flagship space, where manufacturers seem to think that higher prices merit subdued colors — devoid of any fun or playful charm. Google has historically been one of the few remaining holdouts in this regard. However, the color options for this year’s Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have left me wanting. More than that, they have me wishing Google would just bring back the Moto Maker design studio and let me customize my own smartphone.

Besides black and white this year, you can get the Pixel 7 in Lemongrass and Pixel 7 Pro in Hazel. However, I don’t think either of these is as bold as the Kinda Coral of the Pixel 6 or as quirky as the Purple-ish of the Pixel 3a. And unlike a few generations ago, there’s still no accented power button. Worse still, the Pixel’s signature dual-tone look has disappeared this year too.

A smart washing machine gave me a taste of a fully connected home

A connected smart home is not alien to me. I’ve been dipping my toes into the world of smart homes ever since the first smart plugs and bulbs hit the market and went so far as to automate my air conditioner with a smart infrared blaster. I’ve even built and written about my own smart light strip solution. So when it came time to replace my old washing machine, the choice was obvious — I needed a fully connected appliance. It’s now been a few months since I switched over to a Samsung smart washing and drying machine, and the experience has been blissful. In fact, I’m convinced that this is the future we’re all heading towards.

Google’s attempt to throw shade at Tim Cook didn’t go as well as planned

    • Tim Cook went on Twitter to tease a new product, but used a hashtag the Utah Jazz was already using for its own marketing.
    • The co-opting of the hashtag upset Jazz fans, prompting Google’s social media team to go into Cook’s mentions and promote the Pixel 7.
    • The promotional tweet was posted using an iPhone.

Whether it’s Wendy’s mocking McDonald’s or Adidas joking about Nike, we see brands go after each other all the time, especially on Twitter. But if you’re going to try and own a rival, you can’t make mistakes. Google learned that the hard way yesterday.

To tease a new product his company was getting ready to reveal, Tim Cook went on Twitter to release the following tweet:

Catering to both high-end and budget-conscious consumers is no easy task, but 2021’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro did just that, revitalizing Google’s hit-and-miss smartphone series in the process. With the Google Pixel 7, Mountain View is once again looking to hit the sweet spot between flagship specs and experiences without breaking the bank. With a price that severely undercuts its closest rivals from Samsung and Apple, does Google make a few too many compromises, or is this the smartphone bargain of the decade? Let’s find out in Android Authority’s Google Pixel 7 review.
