The best video downloader extensions for Chrome

    0

As much as video services would like to pretend we’re always online and perfectly happy with streaming, there are plenty of times when people want offline access — for a trip, say, or to ensure a favorite video doesn’t suddenly vanish. If you’ve got Google Chrome on your desktop or laptop, there are a number of video downloader extensions to choose from.

The best video downloader extensions for Chrome

We’re only going to recommend a small handful of options here, not the least because every extension is aiming towards an identical goal. Think of this list more as a set of backup choices — downloaders can easily come and go given their questionable legality. In fact, Google tries to outright block extensions from downloading from YouTube, though the reality is that it’s not hard to bypass those limits.

Until now, your options were to take a great picture somewhere, download some wallpaper, or get very good at art. Google just introduced another option: Generative AI wallpapers.

We’ll explain exactly what it is and when you’ll be able to try it for yourself.

Best satellite internet providers of 2023: An honest experience-based look

Satellite internet gets a bad rap for slower speeds and horrible latency. There’s some definite truth to this, though for many of us in rural America, satellite is one of the few options available for internet service. The good news is that breakthroughs in satellite technology are making satellite internet much more practical than ever before. In this guide, we take a look at the best satellite internet providers available in 2023. Truth be told, there are only three options. Let’s dig right in.

Is satellite internet a good option?

Typically, satellite internet is best as a last-ditch option for those that don’t have wired internet options. If you can get LTE-based or 5G fixed wireless internet, that’s typically a better choice for many users. Even options like slow DSL can often outperform traditional satellite service.

Some examples include the Little Witch Academia, Knights of Sidonia, and Seven Deadly Sins. The mixture of titles and genres is good enough for most anime fans, although Netflix naturally pales in comparison to Crunchyroll. Still, there is a ton of options. In a sense, there’s no such thing as a cheap iPhone. Apple is notoriously resistant to selling budget products, and when it does target that market, it’s more likely to repackage older components at mid-range prices. Still, you don’t have to spend $799 or more to get a good iPhone.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 folds flat as confirmed by first leaked press render

Galaxy Z Fold 5 leaked press render
    Credit: MySmartPrice
    • The first leaked press render for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is here.
    • The render appears to confirm the phone will fold flat, a first for the Z Fold series.
    • While the render shows an S Pen, it does not show a slot for the pen, so don’t get too excited for that.

The rumor mill has been churning hard for the next slate of foldable phones from Samsung. The Galaxy Z Flip 5, in particular, appears to be getting a whole redesign with an enormous cover display.

However, its larger, more expensive sibling — the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 — has appeared to be mostly the same so far. Leaked renders showed it folding flat, which was exciting, but there was the chance the renders could be inaccurate. Thankfully, we now can be 99.9% certain that the phone will fold flat. Thanks to MySmartPrice, we have the first leaked press render for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and sure enough, it folds flat.

Sweeping new law will force replaceable batteries on smartphones

    0

Credit: Scott Scrivens / Android Authority
    • European Parliament passed a change to a law that will force replaceable batteries on all gadgets, including smartphones.
    • By law, phones in the EU by 2027 will need to have batteries you can replace with no tools, which means no adhesives.
    • This could fundamentally change how smartphones are designed.

Way back in the day, most smartphones had batteries you could easily swap. You didn’t need tools or a heat gun, either: you could just pop off the back, take the battery out, put in a new one, and go on with your day. It was common to see people with a spare battery in their pockets. Nowadays, thanks to most smartphones being two chunks of glass glued to a metal frame, this is no longer possible.

However, European Parliament may have just brought those days back. In a sweeping new change to a previous law, MEPs voted 587 to nine to force all gadgets to have easily replaceable batteries. When we say “easily,” we mean it: MEPs say this should not require special tools, which means no adhesives.

    • Microsoft will stop making first-party games for the Xbox One.
    • Microsoft will now exclusively focus its attention to the Xbox Series X/S.
    • Some internal teams are still working on updates and content for existing games

During the Microsoft showcase last Sunday, you may have noticed there was no mention of games coming to the Xbox One. The reason why is that Microsoft is finally moving on from the last generation.

In a move that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, Microsoft is moving on from the Xbox One. The Redmond-based firm is now shifting its attention toward supporting the Xbox Series X/S exclusively. Xbox Game Studio Chief Matt Booty confirmed as much during an interview with Axios.

Whats the best smart speaker you can buy?

    0

Amazon kicked off the smart speaker race with the first Echo in 2014, initially launching it as an invitation-only product. Since then the industry has exploded, joined not just by Apple and Google but a range of competing companies. And no wonder — done correctly, a smart speaker setup feels not only useful but futuristic. While privacy concerns remain, prices have reached the point that a few products are almost impulse purchases.

Here then is a look at the best smart speakers — specifically, however, ones within reach of the average person. While something like the Beosound Balance might sound fantastic, most people aren’t prepared to spend thousands of dollars on a single unit.

Amazon Freevee is a video streaming service that operated through Amazon Prime Video, though it is effectively a different service. Unlike Prime Video, where you have to pay a subscription fee to access its library of movies and TV shows, Freevee offers thousands of TV series and movies completely for free, with some ads dropped in before and during your streaming selection. The free streaming service has a pretty solid library of movies, with new titles added all the time, but what are the best movies on Freevee?

We have 19 movies that we think are worth your time, and they are all currently available on Freevee. You can access the service now at the link below:

r/Android gives statement: It will extend its shutdown but not indefinitely

    • Popular subreddit r/Android will stay dark for a few extra days.
    • The site is committing to staying private until June 20, 2023, at 8:00 PM ET.
    • Between now and then, the moderators will figure out what the long-term strategy should be.

Today we will see the bulk of the Reddit protest wind down. In a few hours, a good chunk of the protesting subreddits will come back online for all. However, a prominent few — including some with tens of millions of subscribers — will stay dark indefinitely. These subreddits will remain down until Reddit concedes to demands related to keeping third-party apps alive.

Here at Android Authority, we are most concerned about one of the most popular subreddits in our industry: r/Android. We had the opportunity to speak with some of the subreddit’s moderators, who have spent the bulk of the day discussing what steps to take for the forum.

    • Over 300 major subreddits are staying dark indefinitely.
    • These subs will not budge until Reddit cedes to demands related to third-party API access.
    • In a leaked memo, Reddit’s CEO shows no signs of backing down.

Later today, the sitewide Reddit protest will officially come to a close. This 48-hour event saw over 7,000 subreddits shut down in an attempt to send a message to Reddit executives about their controversial decision to change the way third-party apps can access Reddit’s APIs. By tomorrow morning, a good chunk of these forums will be back to running as usual.

However, a subset of those forums will not reopen. As of this writing, over 300 subreddits are staying dark indefinitely. That number is going up every minute. These subs will continue to protest the changes until Reddit CEO Steve Huffman agrees to meet their demands.

That’s right, Google’s in-house AI will soon automatically answer your queries and summarize articles from the web. But how well does it work in the real world? We put it to the test and compared it against the competition to find out. Here are the results.

Samsung is working with Google to bring apps to Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cover display

    • Samsung is reportedly collaborating with Google to create optimized apps for the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s cover screen.
    • Some of those apps include Google Maps, Google Messages, and YouTube.
    • Most of Samsung’s own apps are said to be optimized as well.

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will see a number of improvements from its predecessor. Arguably, the biggest change of all will be the size of the cover display. Along with that new and improved cover display, Samsung is believed to be working on apps that are optimized for the screen’s size. A new report claims that Samsung and Google are working together to get this done.

From previous leaks, it has been reported that the Flip 5’s cover screen will go up from 1.9 inches to 3.4 inches. As a result, the display will take up the majority of the top half of the device. The increased size lends to more potential functionality for the cover screen than ever before.

RCS is about to get better on AT&T, thanks to Google

    • This should allow for more reliable texting on the carrier’s smartphones.
    • Google says this should also allow AT&T users to instantly get the latest RCS features.

RCS is the successor standard to SMS, allowing for messaging, file sharing, and other features over the internet. One issue is that some networks use their own servers for RCS instead of Google’s Jibe platform.

Reddit not working today? It’s a protest, and here’s what you need to know

    • On June 12, 2023, a major Reddit protest began.
    • The protest sees over 3,500 subreddits “going dark” to protest new site policies.
    • For at least the next 48 hours, huge chunks of Reddit will not work.

If you opened up Reddit today hoping to see some cute cat photos on r/Aww or to find out some new trivia on r/TodayILearned, you probably faced some problems doing so. Don’t worry; there’s nothing wrong with your phone or computer. Those popular subreddits voluntarily shut down in the form of protest.

Starting today, June 12, 2023, over 3,500 subreddits will “go dark” to protest planned changes to how the site treats third-party developers. In other words, the fact that you can’t access major sections of Reddit is not an accident but very much by design.

Transparency mode vs open-fit: Picking the right earbuds to hear the world

    0

Headphone users have never had as much choice as they do today. From budget but brilliant true wireless earbuds to wired audiophile-grade headphones, knowing what will best suit your needs can be difficult. Those looking to stay aware of their surroundings benefit most from using open-fit headphones or transparency mode-capable earbuds. That’s because open-fit earbuds and transparency modes allow ambient sound into your audio feed. This has a wide range of handy applications we’ll delve into later in this article.

But before we continue any further, it’s worth noting that open-fit earbuds are different to open-back headphones. The purpose of open-back headphones is to allow air to pass behind the speaker drivers. This helps to reduce unwanted resonance and excess low-frequencies. On the other hand, open-fit buds leave the ear canal free to allow ambient sound into the audio feed.

Google Pixel 7a problems and how to fix them

    0

The Pixel 7a is one of the best budget-friendly phones you can get, especially if you want fantastic cameras. Google’s “a” series continues to get better with every generation, and the Pixel 7a borrows plenty of design elements and hardware from its flagship siblings, from the Tensor G2 processing package and the metal camera “visor” on the back to useful extras like wireless charging and dust and water resistance. However, like with any smartphone, the Pixel 7a isn’t free from bugs and glitches. Here’s a look at some common Google Pixel 7a problems and how to fix them!

Editor’s note: It’s important to remember that not every Pixel 7a will have these problems. In fact, you might not come across any issues at all.

Camera quality has become one of the most important factors when picking a new phone. We conducted a poll in early 2021, and the results were as we assumed. About 24% of you told us you value the camera above all. Over 50% said it was a key factor in your buying decision, while only about 5% said you didn’t care about the camera at all, and I happen to share this opinion. Let’s talk about why and how not caring about the smartphone camera can be so liberating.

Poll: IPX8 or IP52, which rating is better for foldables?

A few obstacles stand between me and the best foldables available today: thickness, single-handed usability, cameras, and ingress protection. The recent announcement of the Motorola Razr line-up made me reconsider that last part because any kind of water or dust resistance is a tough ask on a folding piece of tech, and Motorola seems to have gone in the opposite direction of Samsung and Google by privileging dust over water protection.

But let’s back up a bit. Until today, some foldables lacked any kind of ingress protection. That was the case of the HONOR Magic Vs and TECNO Phantom V Fold, for example. Others like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 and the Google Pixel Fold are rated IPX8.

5 Android Apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

    0

Welcome to the 487th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

    • Google Password Manager now has a dedicated home in Chrome. The company also rolled out some other upgrades to the Password Manager service as well. Once it’s rolled out to you, you can go to chrome://password-manager/passwords to check it out yourself. Otherwise, hit the link to see what it looks like.
    • Google Photos has a new, somewhat bizarre feature. It now attempts to face-tag people from behind. The bizarre part is that it gets it right most of the time. As you can imagine, a bad hair day and other variables can prevent it from being 100% accurate, at least right now. Still, it’s a neat party trick.
    • WhatsApp introduced Channels this week. The new feature is similar to Telegram and Instagram where you can broadcast messages to your followers without needing to exchange phone numbers. Read the post at the link to learn more.
    • There’s a chance that Google skips an Android version for Android TV and Wear OS. The company announced its retirement of Android TV 13 in favor of Android TV 14 while Wear OS 4 is moving straight from Android 11 to Android 13. We’re not entirely sure why this is going on, but it could be because skipping a version helps manufacturers out.
    • Last week, we talked about Reddit killing off third-party apps by charging them for access. This week, Reddit released several statements in defense of its actions. Eventually, Reddit did relent and kept API access free for apps like Luna for Reddit and RedditForBlind, where accessibility is the goal. Still, the users are revolting, with a protest scheduled to happen on June 12 for 48 hours. Read the links to catch up on the latest.

In 2023, AI is everywhere. Unless you listen to Apple.

Apple announced plenty of shiny new toys at WWDC 2023; a new 15-inch MacBook Air, a powerhouse Apple M2 Ultra chipset, and even its long-rumored VR headset — the Apple Vision Pro. But a notable absentee from this year’s buzzword bingo was “generative AI.” Is Apple about to miss out on the next breakaway tech trend that Google and Microsoft have chased so hard? The company’s latest batch of announcements would certainly suggest so. At least in part.

Despite ducking the topic directly, Apple has a continued interest in AI use cases. “Machine learning” was mentioned a few times during Apple’s keynote. Call screening, voicemail transcription, and sentence-level autocorrection features leverage the company’s neural engine processor capabilities. At the same time, visionOS, for its new goggles, uses a neural network to scan and replicate your face for a digital avatar.

Exclusive: These are the leaked camera specs for the Google Pixel 8 series

    0

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Google Pixels have built a reputation for being excellent camera phones, thanks to investing heavily in computational photography right from the get-go. This was a great move that kept generations of Pixels competitive even though their hardware plateaued after Google stuck with the same primary camera sensor for four years straight. Even last year’s Pixel 6a earned praise from us and others in the camera department, even though it had the same Sony IMX363 image sensor.

The Pixel 6 series saw Google introduce the first major camera hardware upgrades since the Pixel 3. The entire camera setup was upgraded, most noticeably swapping the aging primary sensor for a Samsung ISOCELL GN1. Building on this configuration, the Google Pixel 7 series provided more minor improvements, including a new selfie camera, upgraded telephoto lens, and macro mode on the Pro model. Thanks to a source inside Google, we’ve gained a lot of insight into the camera specs and features of the upcoming Google Pixel 8 series. Let’s delve into the details.

The 248th edition here with Galaxy foldables officially coming earlier than expected, the OnePlus Nord N30 5G launch, (possibly fake) Nothing Phone 2 renders, everything you missed at Summer Game Fest’s opening event, and some tips on defeating Street Fighter 6 opponents…

This week I’ve been enjoying being an 80s late-night radio talk show host, bent on saving the town’s population from a serial killer. Yes, I’m talking about Killer Frequency, on PS5. Once I’ve finished, I might give it a go on Quest 2 as well to see what it’s like in VR!

Reddit CEO does AMA, doesn’t address or even mention upcoming subreddit protests

    • Reddit CEO Steve Huffman posted a statement on the ongoing controversies surrounding upcoming API changes.
    • The post was also an AMA (ask me anything), but Huffman skipped over many important questions.
    • Notably, Huffman did not acknowledge or even mention the upcoming June 12 blackout protests.

If you frequently use Reddit, it’s been a wild week. First, we found out that some upcoming changes to how Reddit lets developers use its API will kill the most popular third-party Reddit apps. Next, we discovered a continuously expanding set of subreddits that will protest these changes by going dark for 48 hours starting on June 12. Finally, yesterday we found out that three of the most popular third-party Reddit apps — Sync, reddit is fun, and Apollo — will shut down on June 30 and not come back.

Now, today, we have an AMA from Steve Huffman, also known as u/spez. Ostensibly, this AMA from Reddit’s CEO and co-founder should have been an easy way to clear the air on some of the topics users and moderators care most about. However, Huffman and a team of three other Reddit administrators only posted 21 replies to the thousands of questions. Some of those 21 replies weren’t even statements but just clarifications of previous comments or, in one case, simply one hyperlink to another comment.

Best deal of 2023 on the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

    0

They may have a stupid name, but the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 have long stood among the best ANC headphones money can buy. We’ve just picked up on a sudden price drop on the headphones, temporarily marking them down to just $299 ($80 off).

Our sister site, SoundGuys, named the headset on its best wireless headphones under $400 list with good reason. But despite how long they’ve been available, it’s been very rare that you could buy them for under $300. The last time it happened was for a single day in December, and prior to that, it was almost one year ago.

5 best Nintendo DS emulators for Android

The Nintendo DS is among the most popular handheld consoles of all time. Its iconic value is right up there with that of the Game Boy and the PSP, and it’s one of the best-selling consoles in Nintendo’s storied history. There were some amazing games for the system and sometimes it’s easier to keep those games on your phone than to carry around a second device to play them. Sadly, the development of the Nintendo DS emulator platform is still a little niche so there aren’t a ton of options to choose from. Nevertheless, we did find a few that worked well so here are the best Nintendo DS emulators for Android.

    • The latest Android 14 beta includes improvements in how the OS handles a stylus.
    • Pressing a stylus’s tail button will open the default note-taking app.
    • New settings to ignore stylus button presses and a shortcut to change the default note-taking app have also been added.

Android 14‘s third beta is here, and it gives us a good look at some of the changes that Google has planned for the future of Android. With Android 14, Google is improving how the OS handles stylus, with new settings to change the default notes app and a toggle to ignore all stylus button presses.

As spotted by Mishaal Rahman, Android 14 contains code to differentiate between various buttons on a stylus: the primary button closest to the tip, the secondary button, the tertiary button, and the tail button. Pressing the tail button will launch the note-taking app you have set as default.
