The August 2023 Android security patch is here! If you own a recent Google Pixel smartphone or the Pixel Tablet you can perform a software update check now in System Settings to grab it. You can also update manually or simply wait for the OTA notification.

We’re still in for a wait until Apple’s next launch, but we’re already anticipating Lightning to make way for USB-C, universal Qi2 wireless charging, and we may even see rounded corners on at least one of the larger models. This could be the biggest shakeup to the series in years.

About two weeks ago, I put on my swimsuit and jumped in the pool for my first lap swimming session in four years. In less than one length, it was obvious to me that nothing had changed: I still knew how to freestyle swim (even though I was immediately out of breath) and Fitbit trackers were still utterly useless at swim tracking.

I am currently wearing a Pixel Watch and using it to track my walks, random hikes, and, for the past couple of weeks, swims. And let me tell you one experience is not like the others. So if your preferred form of exercise involves doing back-and-forths in the pool, I wouldn’t recommend you get a Fitbit and I’d caution you against the Pixel Watch too; there are much better smartwatches for swimming out there.

Foldable phones like the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 5 give us a tablet-sized screen in our pocket and are very handy for content consumption, reducing the need for a separate small tablet.

However, the more I use Fold-style foldables, the more I realize that there’s one must-have accessory for them: a kickstand case. And if your foldy doesn’t come with one in the box, you should definitely buy one. Why? Hear me out here.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 495th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

• Google’s Results About You tool received a boost in functionality here recently. The service now alerts you if you it detects new personally identifiable information in Google Search results. It then gives you the tools you need to get rid of it. Click the link to learn more, but just about everybody should check it out.
• YouTube Shorts got a few new features this week. Some of them even came from TikTok and Instagram Reels. The features include a new Collab feature similar to TikTok’s Stitch feature, new tools to convert landscape content into portrait-oriented content, and more. • Google may remove the Chrome from Chrome OS soon. Google has spent a couple of years trying to decouple Google Chrome from Chrome OS already. Some references in the code suggest that folks will be able to enable a standalone browser starting with Chrome OS 116.
• Fitbit is redesigning its app. The company boasts refreshed visuals, simpler navigation, new features, and better tracking for achievements and badges. The beta rolled out on August 1st, so these changes should come to everyone in the relatively near future.
• A leaked Google memo shows that it’s still committed to Google Assistant. It’s not a question a ton of people have asked, but ChatGPT and Bard kind of do what Assistant does. Google says they’re adding AI smarts to Assistant to make it even better than before. To be perfectly honest, this is the path I thought Google was going to take instead of Bard, so it’s nice to see they’re getting around to it eventually. You can read the leaked memo at the link.

I ditched music streaming services and the only thing I miss is discovery

I still vividly remember receiving a Spotify beta invite in my college email inbox, even though it’s been well over a decade since. That day changed how I consumed music forever, or so I thought. Painstakingly ripping and syncing tunes between my PC and iPod/phone became a thing of the past, and the number of artists in my collection ballooned. But times have changed once again, and today’s overabundance of music has made streaming less, not more, valuable to me.

For a start, the early days of Spotify had very few ads, and even those were super short by today’s standards. Sticking to the free options was totally viable, especially for a cash-strapped student. But music streaming isn’t so cheap these days, as Spotify has driven users (including myself) onto plans that are increasingly less good value for money, at least in this user’s opinion.

It has not been a great year for smartphones. Demand has been down across the board for almost every brand, except for Google. As a direct result, chip makers are also experiencing down sales during this turbulent time. Qualcomm, the maker of Snapdragon SoCs, is having a particularly rough time, according to its most recent earnings report.

On August 2, 2023, Qualcomm published its third-quarter earnings report. The Q3 report shows that handset chip sales have gone down by 25% year over year. The company also recorded a net income loss of 52% year over year. And to make things worse, the guidance for the next quarter came in lower than expected, which resulted in an 8% stock drop after the call, according to Ars Technica.
