There is a confusing mess of protocols when it comes to screen mirroring and casting content. Between Google Cast/Chromecast, Miracast, and Apple AirPlay, users are left scratching their heads on what device supports what protocol and what they should prefer. Each of these protocols has pros and cons, but the lack of interoperability hurts consumers who aren’t deeply entrenched within one ecosystem. Samsung hopes to fix some of that pain with One UI 6, allowing Galaxy smartphones to officially support Chromecast without additional setup.

Sammobile has spotted that Samsung has made casting content from your Galaxy smartphone easier via Google Cast with the One UI 6 update. You can now easily enable screen mirroring by going to Settings > Connected Devices > Smart View, and then tap the three-dot icon and open Settings > Labs. Here there is a new setting for Chromecast support, which you can easily toggle on.

The iPhone’s Dynamic Island is like the Mac’s Touch Bar: A promising failure

Apple’s design iteration of its principal money maker, the iPhone, is one of slow deliberation. In fact, Apple rarely, if ever, takes bold steps with the design. That said, it wouldn’t be unfair to call 2022 a special year. The company pulled a one-two surprise by introducing the Dynamic Island to the iPhone 14 Pro and gave the phone an all-new interface mechanism.

Sure, Dynamic Island’s quasi-multitasking approach is a clever ploy to hide the comically large camera and Face ID cutouts, but it’s also reminiscent of the quickly-retired MacBook Touch Bar in a way. It’s a quirky and innovative addition to the otherwise intentional-to-a-fault design of the iPhone, but it slowly faded in the background. One week into using the iPhone 14 Pro, I was loving the Dynamic Island’s heads-up approach toward critical alerts, quick access shortcuts, and navigation. One year later, I’ve all but forgotten about it.

Apple’s iPhone accounted for a massive 55% of the market in Q2 2023, up an impressive 10% compared to a year ago. This dominance is particularly noteworthy because the quarter was a quiet period for Apple with no new phone launches. Meanwhile, Samsung accounted for a mere 23% of the market (down 5% year-on-year) despite launching the Galaxy S23 series and several Galaxy A phones in Q1 and Q2.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 497th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines this week:

• Google had a couple of AI announcements this week. The first is a new feature where AI will summarize longer articles into a summary that is quicker for the reader to understand directly in Search. The other is from an anonymous source that says Google is working on a new AI, dubbed Gemini. Rumor is that it’ll be available for developers and potentially consumers later this year. • Google may kill off Assistant on older Wear OS smartwatches. The rumor says that Assistant would be turned off on devices running Wear OS 2 and older. It’s a curious move considering that Wear OS 2 devices launched just a few short years ago, and even more curious since watches that old wouldn’t expect to get many more updates anyway.
• WhatsApp announced a couple of new features this week. The first is AI-generated stickers, where users can create a sticker by describing one. That’s right in line with the swatch of AI-generated art that’s come out this year. The second new feature is the ability to schedule group calls. It’s an extension of an already existing feature, but it’s nice to have options.
• X CEO Lina Yaccarino opened up to CNBC this week about the name change from Twitter to X. According to her, it’s because the platform intends to add things like video calls, peer-to-peer payments, and other new features that would be very un-Twitter-like, hence the name change. • YouTube is testing yet another anti-adblocker. This one has a countdown timer. YouTube has spent a good percentage of 2023 getting users to watch ads on YouTube. This new countdown timer would give the user 30-60 seconds of warning before stopping the video until the adblocker is turned off or until the user signs up for YouTube Premium. It’s an understandable maneuver, but not a desirable one.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra revisited: The good and the bad six months later

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra landed early in 2023 with all of the hype of a headliner at Coachella or Lollapalooza — and we rewarded it with a rock & roll comparison that stretched on just as long as either of the festivals mentioned above. While we won’t be revisiting the Springsteen-centric theme from our original Galaxy S23 Ultra review, it’s time to see how some of Samsung’s finer points have stood the test of time. After all, the Galaxy S23 Ultra now faces a different class of competitors than it did in February. Let’s see if the “Boss of Android” (last reference, I promise) is still on top in our Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra revisit.

While I haven’t had my SIM embedded in the Galaxy S23 Ultra over the entirety of the last six months (I’ve had to test a lot of devices!), it’s a phone that’s never dipped too far out of my rotation. I still prefer a smaller device and, if I’m lucky, one that flips open and closed, but I’ve come to appreciate what Samsung’s beast of a flagship has to offer. With some summer plans on the horizon, I swapped my SIM from the Galaxy Z Flip 5 back to the Galaxy S23 Ultra and got reacquainted with the S Pen.

Someday you might be able to use your Android TV as a Bluetooth speaker

Most Android TV systems can support sending audio out over Bluetooth. This allows for convenient features such as using a pair of Bluetooth headphones while watching TV. However, very few Android TVs can support receiving Bluetooth streams. That might change in the future, though.

Thanks to some code-sleuthing from Mishaal Rahman (as explained on his paywalled Patreon page where he dishes exclusive Android news and leaks), Google and MediaTek could be working on integrating Bluetooth media reception in the platform’s core code.
