  • Lenovo Legion Go is here: A massive, super-powered Windows gaming handheld

    • The Lenovo Legion Go is a new Windows-powered gaming handheld.
    • It has the biggest display we’ve ever seen on a device like this, as well as Joy-Con-like detachable controllers.
    • You can buy one for $699 at some point in October 2023. There will also be compatible glasses and headphones sold separately.

In July 2021, Valve surprised us all by announcing the Steam Deck, a Linux-powered gaming handheld. Although it came years after the Nintendo Switch — a clear inspiration — it single-handedly started the gaming handheld craze we see today, with notable competitors such as the ASUS ROG Ally making headlines.

Now, Lenovo is throwing its hat in the ring. At IFA 2023, the company launched the Lenovo Legion Go, a Windows-based gaming handheld.

Fairphone 5 hands-on: Feels like the best phone for a small group of people

    0

Every year, we see the newest and best smartphones from the big brands, such as Samsung, Apple, Google, etc. Regardless of your preferred brand, the messaging is always crystal clear: “Your old phone is not as good as this new phone, so out with the old and in with the new!” While this is usually great for a company’s revenue, it’s not so great for the environment — or the usually underpaid folks who actually produce those phones on the factory line. These are trends the just-launched Fairphone 5 aims to disrupt.

In this sense, the Fairphone 5 is the anti-smartphone. It’s designed to be kept for a very long time by being easily repairable, easily upgradeable, and kept up-to-date with software for an ambitious ten years. In other words, Fairphone wants you to buy this phone and then not buy another until well into 2030. That’s not the message we get from pretty much any other brand.

How to check data usage on your Android device

    0

Blazing 5G network speeds and the proliferation of video content means we’re burning through mobile data on our devices faster than ever. This can be problematic if you’re on a limited data plan that charges you more for going over your allocation, or even more so if you’re abroad and paying by the gigabyte. Even on unlimited data plans, your speeds can sometimes get severely throttled if you exceed a certain usage threshold. For these reasons, it’s important to know how to check data usage on your Android device — and to learn how to manage it.

We’ll run you through everything you need to know in this quick guide. You’re on the wrong page if you’re an iOS user, but we also have a guide to checking mobile data usage on iPhone.

    • Google is bringing generative AI-based search features to India and Japan.
    • The company has also brought improvements to its AI-powered overview feature.

Google may have been a little late to the generative AI game, but it’s been testing a so-called Search Generative Experience (SGE) with users as part of a limited Search Labs experiment. This effectively boils down to offering AI-powered overviews, key points for articles, and local/travel recommendations in search. Now, the Mountain View company has announced that more people can try out this tech.

Google revealed that its Search Labs initiative and associated SGE features are now available in India and Japan. Users in these regions will need to opt into the Search Labs experiment first to get started.

Windows 11 Pro is on sale for just $32.97 until Friday (83% off)

    Microsoft Windows 11 Pro Deal

Your free upgrade to Windows 11 Home is great for casual users, but many professionals and businesses will be interested in the enhanced functionality of the Pro version. If you’re keen to know more, we’ve been alerted to this excellent Windows 11 Pro deal, which massively drops the price of the Microsoft OS to just $32.97 ($162 off).

You might be wondering, what’s the difference? Well, for one, the Home edition lacks support for Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox. While it can serve as a Remote Desktop client, it can’t host one. The Pro version fully supports these features, including the creation of virtual machines via Hyper-V and safe app testing with Windows Sandbox. Security-wise, the Pro edition offers BitLocker encryption, safeguarding data on hard drives, and Windows Information Protection, which prevents company data leakage and distinguishes between personal and business data on a device.

    • At the end of the subscription, Google One, YouTube Premium, and Google Play Pass will renew together at a discount.

When the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro launched in 2021, Google also launched a subscription plan called Pixel Pass. This subscription allowed you to pay a monthly fee to pay for the cost of your Pixel phone, YouTube Premium subscription, Google One subscription, and Google Play Pass. With plans lasting for a span of two years, Pixel Pass subscribers could save a lot of money on these services. But now Google is putting an end to the program.

Today, Google published a new entry in its Pixel Pass support page. In the post, Google announced that Pixel Pass will no longer be offered for new Pixel purchases starting today. So, if you were hoping to take advantage of this deal for the Pixel 8 series, you’ll be out of luck.

    • How much will it cost? We anticipate the cost will be higher than the Venu 2 Plus which landed at $449. General rising costs in the market make a $499 price tag most likely.

Update, August 28, 2023 (4:00 PM ET): We have updated our Garmin Venu 3 rumor hub to include leaks regarding sleep. skin temperature, and a retailer listing.

    • Samsung’s Galaxy S23 FE gained approval at the FCC on August 25.
    • The US variant carries model number SM-S711U.
    • The FCC application reveals that the phone has been in testing since May.

As we inch closer to the eventual launch of the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, the device has passed through a variety of agencies like the Wireless Power Consortium and the Bluetooth SIG. Most recently, the device has been spotted at the FCC, and it appears the handset has been there for quite a while.

As discovered by SamMobile, an FCC application for the US variant of the latest Galaxy Fan Edition phone appeared online on August 25. The listing shows both the carrier-bound SM-S711U model number and the factory-unlocked SM-S711U1 model number. Samsung’s handset was approved by the FCC on the same day.

I could live with a slower chip in the Samsung Galaxy S24

We’re only halfway through Samsung’s typical flagship release cycle, yet rumors are already swirling about 2024’s Galaxy S24. Specifically, whether we’ll see a return to custom chipsets with the rumored Exynos 2400 or if Samsung will stick with Qualcomm and use the as-yet-unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

There are currently two conflicting sets of speculation. The first suggests we will see a return to a traditional geographical split: Snapdragon handsets for the US, China, and select other markets, and Exynos making a return for the rest of the world. The second is more intriguing. Samsung could ship its Exynos chip in the base Galaxy S24, while Snapdragon bulks up the Plus and Ultra models. If we had to pick between the two, the latter option is probably the most appealing; here’s why.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could get a brighter display, but ditch the curves

    • New leaks suggest that the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s display could be brighter than the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s by 750 nits in peak brightness value.
    • Further, leaks suggest that Samsung could be ditching the iconic curved display. Instead, the Galaxy S24 Ultra could opt for a flat display.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has one of the best displays on a flagship smartphone right now, rivaled only by the likes of the OPPO Find X6 Pro in brightness and the Sony Xperia 1 V in resolution. With the Galaxy S24 series, we expect Samsung to raise the bar with meaningful upgrades. It seems Samsung wants to go brighter and flatter with the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s display if new leaks are to be believed.

According to leaker Ice Universe, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will come with a 6.78-inch display with a 3,120 x 1,440 resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and a peak brightness of 2,500 nits. The aspect ratio is erroneously mentioned at 19.5:5 but has been clarified in a subsequent tweet.

Realme GT 5 launched: This phone has a Burning Mode

    • Realme has launched the Realme GT 5 in China.
    • The phone brings a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and 240W wired charging speeds.
    • The GT 5 starts at ~$411 in China, but there’s no word on a global launch.

Realme launched the GT 3 at MWC 2023 early this year, bringing 240W charging that effectively reached the limit of USB-C. The phone stuck with last year’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset though, but Realme has rectified that (and then some) with the newly announced Realme GT 5.

The Pixel 8 camera app needs an overhaul, not meagre UI tweaks

Google’s Pixel phones have long had a reputation for delivering fantastic cameras, harking back to the original Pixel and even the Nexus 6P. But after using my Pixel 7 Pro for over nine months, I’ve realized that the Pixel camera app needs an overhaul.

No, I’m not talking about an overhaul per our recent Pixel 8 camera UI leak. Instead, I’m talking about broader additions that would bring the camera app in line with camera apps from the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi, and others.

ASUS reportedly shuts down Zenfone division, no more compact flagships

    • A report from Taiwan suggests that ASUS has shut down the Zenfone division, moving employees to the ROG Phone division and other areas of its business.
    • The report follows incidents of disallowing bootloader unlock and removal of older firmware.
    • This could mark the end of the Zenfone line.

The ASUS Zenfone 10 is our pick for the best compact flagship, delivering a powerful experience in a compact form factor without any of the usual downsides. The Zenfone 10 and even the Zenfone 9 have received critical acclaim from reviewers like us. Many praise ASUS for continuing with trends like including a 3.5mm headphone jack and maintaining a compact flagship with no real compromises. But it could be the end of the lineup, as new reports have emerged about ASUS shutting down the Zenfone division.

According to a report from Technews Taiwan, ASUS is carrying out internal restructuring, and as part of the process, certain departments have been cut down. One of the unfortunate victims of this internal restructuring is the Zenfone division, which is said to have been shut down. Employees working in this division have been absorbed into the ROG Phone team and other parts of the business.

Does the larger display on the Galaxy Watch 6 improve the experience?

Samsung’s brand-new Galaxy Watch 6 lineup boasts bigger displays than ever. If you ask most smartwatch wearers, more screen space should mean a better user experience. If nothing else, larger graphics are easier to tap and larger text is easier to read. But how does the expansion actually translate on users’ wrists, and is the experience significantly different on a Galaxy Watch 6 versus a Galaxy Watch 5? We dug in.

Why is there no easy way to see battery health on Android?

    0
    AccuBattery Battery Health App
Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Batteries don’t last forever; that’s just an unfortunate fact of smartphone life. As controversial as the iPhone 14’s seemingly limited long-term battery health may be, at least Apple provides an easy method to track how your power cell is holding up. It’s as simple as checking your regular battery settings. So while your iPhone may eventually only last a few hours on a single charge, at least you’ll be well prepared to book that battery replacement.

Android, by comparison, is a black box. Everything ticks along fine until your phone starts restarting, and hopefully, you piece together that the battery is kaput before sending the phone away for diagnostics. A simple battery replacement isn’t all that expensive, especially compared to a new phone. But many will end up discarding an otherwise perfectly working handset because it’s not clear what the cause of the problem really is or they need an immediate fix.
