  • Samsung’s best Galaxy A-series device might not be coming to the US

    0
    • Samsung has launched the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55 in European markets.
    • A Samsung representative confirmed that the Galaxy A35 is coming to the US market.
    • As of now, the Galaxy A55 isn’t expected to be available to buy in the US.

Samsung unveiled its latest Galaxy A-series phones today — the Galaxy A35 and the Galaxy A55 — in European markets. Both phones bring meaningful upgrades to their design, improved internals, and better cameras. But there’s mixed news for US buyers hoping to snag these new mid-range devices.

According to a report from CNET, Samsung is only planning to bring the Galaxy A35 to the US market as of now. This would mark a significant shift in strategy for Samsung’s A-series in the US market. Previous A5x series phones like the A50, A51, A52, A53, and A54 all enjoyed official US releases, while the Galaxy A34 and A33 never made it to US shores.

The Pixel 9 may debut Google’s Adaptive Touch feature

    0
    • Your phone’s touch sensitivity determines how well the screen reacts to your touches.
    • Various factors like how wet your fingers are or whether a screen protector is applied can affect how sensitive your phone’s screen feels.
    • The Pixel 9 may add an “Adaptive Touch” feature that automatically adjusts touch sensitivity to account for these factors.

If you’ve ever tried to swipe through your phone on a rainy day, you’re probably aware of how finicky it can be. Wet fingers can disrupt the ability for capacitive touch screens to register your touch, causing your tap or swipe inputs to be dropped. Thick or low-quality screen protectors can also reduce your phone’s touch sensitivity. For these reasons, many phones offer touch sensitivity settings or at least a dedicated “screen protector mode” to boost the touch sensitivity. The upcoming Google Pixel 9 may take things a step further by offering an automatic “Adaptive Touch” mode.

While I was digging through last month’s Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1 release, I found evidence that suggests Google is preparing to add an “Adaptive Touch” setting under Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity. Although the setting doesn’t currently show up on my Google Pixel 8 Pro running the latest Android QPR beta, I dug into the code and found that when Adaptive Touch is enabled, “touch sensitivity will automatically adjust to your environment, activities and screen protector.”

TikTok prepares to challenge Instagram with ‘TikTok Photos’

    • Strings found in the latest TikTok app APK mention a standalone app named TikTok Photos.
    • While launch and availability details are still unknown, we have a first look at the potential logo for the new app.

With Instagram, heavily invested in short-form videos through its Reels feature, TikTok seems to be returning the favor by entering the photo-sharing space that Instagram helped popularize. Code from the latest TikTok app update hints at the upcoming launch of a dedicated photo-sharing platform called TikTok Photos.

TheSpAndroid made the discovery through an APK teardown, uncovering numerous references to “TikTok Photos” within the latest version of the TikTok app — version 33.8.4 (com.zhiliaoapp.musically). These references include strings like “Open TikTok Photos,” “Share this post to TikTok Photos,” and “Reach other like-minded people who enjoy photo posts.”

    • Apple blocked Epic’s attempt at bringing their games back to the iPhone in Europe.
    • The European Commission began investigating whether Apple went against EU regulations.
    • Apple, facing scrutiny, decided to reinstate Epic’s developer account in Europe.

European users will soon be able to play Epic’s Fortnite on their iPhone, despite a tumultuous back-and-forth between Epic and Apple in the wake of their legal spat.

Following Epic and Apple’s very public legal dispute in 2020, the European Commission (EC) introduced new regulations aimed at combating unfair practices toward business users and customers in Europe. This opened the door for Epic to return to iOS devices. But Apple quickly squashed hopes of Epic’s comeback, by banning Epic’s developer account. On Friday, however, Epic announced that Apple had decided to reinstate their developer account in Europe and the game developer is working on bringing Fortnite back to iOS via the Epic Games Store.

The chatbot has received numerous updates since then, which have added features like custom instructions, GPTs, and newer models like GPT-4 Turbo. But competition has also been heating up over the past year, with Microsoft Copilot and Google’s Gemini sometimes delivering better results vs ChatGPT.

So even though the chatbot remains popular to this day, I believe ChatGPT could take some inspiration from the competition. To that end, here are five things I’d like to see from ChatGPT in the coming months.

Should you pay Verizon $10 to add a second number or go for a cheaper alternative?

    0
Verizon logo on smartphone with a colored background Stock photo 2
Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

Verizon recently announced a new Second Number plan, letting customers add a second line to their existing Verizon phones. This might sound familiar as Verizon previously offered a similar feature called My Numbers that allowed up to four lines, but that offering ended in 2022. One big distinction is the older program used virtual numbers and required an app, whereas Verizon’s new plan uses your device’s eSIM and works just like a real number. Calls and texts will work with native messaging and phone calling apps, though data will be dependent on your main connection.

Verizon Second Plan isn't the cheapest, but it is a convenient way to add a second line.

Verizon says Second Number is aimed at those of us who want more privacy for our main line. This could be especially useful for anyone who needs a number for side hustles or online dating without giving out their main number. From now until June 5th you can sign up for the new plan and lock it in at a rate of $10 a month, whereas it goes up to $15 after that for new plan members. Is Second Number worth it when there are free and cheap alternatives out there? It depends on what you’re looking for.

Switching from iPhone to Android is about to be easier thanks to the EU

    • To comply with the DMA, Apple is working on making it easier to transfer data from an iPhone to a non-Apple device.
    • Apple will put out its data transfer solution by fall 2025.
    • The company is also making it possible to uninstall Safari and change the default navigation app on iOS.

The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is forcing Apple to shake things up with its walled garden in a way it has never done before. As it attempts to comply with the regulation, the company will make it easier to switch from an iPhone to an Android.

First spotted by The Verge, Apple has now released a document that outlines how it will comply with the DMA. Within the document, the firm details it is working on “user-friendly solutions to transfer data from an iPhone to a non-Apple phone.” However, it looks like we’ll have to wait until fall next year for that data transfer solution to arrive.

Android 15 might let you send text messages via satellite

    0
    • Code within the latest Android beta reveals Google is preparing to release a built-in satellite messaging feature in partnership with T-Mobile.
    • There are many areas where cellular connectivity is either spotty or nonexistent because the nearest cell tower is too far away, but low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites can still be reached.
    • Smartphone vendors have been racing to include satellite connectivity support in their devices ever since Apple rolled it out on the iPhone 14.

Cell towers blanket most parts of the United States and other developed nations, but they still don’t reach many remote areas. If you’re ever in an emergency without cellular connectivity, you’d better hope you were prepared for such a situation, let someone know beforehand about your plans, find an area with limited connectivity, or use a device capable of satellite connectivity to send an emergency SOS. The vast majority of Android smartphones currently don’t support sending text messages via satellite, but Google might be changing that in Android 15.

When Apple launched the iPhone 14 series, one lauded feature was Emergency SOS. Emergency SOS uses special phone antenna hardware to establish a direct connection with low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. This lets the iPhone send text messages to emergency services without cellular connectivity. During the devastating Maui wildfires last August, several people were able to text for help after the fires destroyed the local cellular infrastructure.

    • Apple has updated its support page about third-party app stores in the EU.
    • The page now says that users can be outside of the EU for 30 days before losing access to certain sideloading features.

After rolling out iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, Apple laid out the rules on how it would handle third-party app stores on its platform. In a support document, the company revealed that EU users would lose access to certain sideloading features if they leave the EU for too long, but didn’t specify the length of time. Apple has now updated that support page to provide more clarification.

Yesterday, Apple published a support page explaining that eligibility for alternative app marketplaces is “determined by using on-device processing.” It also mentioned that if customers venture outside of the EU for any reason, there would be a “grace period” before they lose access to some features like updating apps through third-party app stores.

Apple stumbles big in China: iPhone sales plummet by 24%

    • Facing fierce competition and lacking significant upgrades, Apple’s iPhone sales in China dropped significantly in the first six weeks of 2024.
    • Apple’s struggles coincide with HUAWEI’s comeback and aggressive pricing from domestic brands like Vivo and Xiaomi.

While Apple has a strong, sturdy position in the US, the same can’t be said for the company in China. The iPhone 15 maker is reportedly struggling in the world’s largest smartphone market, with sales plummeting by 24%.

According to independent research firm Counterpoint, sales for the iPhone dropped dramatically (by 24%) over the first six weeks of 2024. At the same time, the broader Chinese mobile market itself shrank by 7% during this period. Despite that, it appears domestic brands, like vivo and OPPO, were able to take the lead by targeting the budget segment.

    • The Pixel 8a’s starting price could exceed €550 in Europe, a significant jump over the Pixel 7a’s launch price.
    • The Pixel 8a is expected to launch in four color options and two storage variants.
    • Previous leaks have hinted at other potential features like a Google Tensor G3 processor, 8GB RAM, and a design similar to the Pixel 8 series.

A major leak from European publication Winfuture has shed light on potential details surrounding Google’s upcoming Pixel 8a. The leak, obtained from German retailers, hints at a possible price increase, new color options, and storage variants.

Buying a new iPad or MacBook this month? You should wait for these new launches

    0

Credit: Oliver Cragg / Android Authority
    • Apple could be launching a lot of new hardware as soon as this week, but it could skip the launch event and do it through press releases.
    • New products expected include revamps to the iPad Pro, iPad Air refresh with a new 12.9-inch model, new Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard accessories, and refresh to the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models.

With MWC 2024 behind us, it’s time to look forward to the next round of product launches coming our way. Some of the big ones happening this month could be from Apple, but the company could keep it low-key by skipping events and doing silent launches instead. But what is in store from Apple this month? Here’s what leaks have to say!

According to MacRumors, citing unnamed sources, Apple plans to announce new products with press releases this week. These products could be new iPads, Macs, and accessories.

Bloomberg corroborates this partly by mentioning that new Mac, iPad, Apple Pencil, and Magic Keyboard updates are coming in the next several weeks. However, Apple could skip holding a grand event for these Spring launches. The products will likely be announced through Apple’s websites in a “series of online videos and marketing campaigns.” Bloomberg believes that these devices will arrive sometime in March or April.

According to Bloomberg, the products that Apple could launch include revamped iPad Pro models (i.e., the iPad Pro 7th gen) with OLED display and M3 chips, new Magic Keyboards to go along with the new iPad Pros, an updated iPad Air 6th gen alongside a new 12.9-inch screen model, new Apple Pencils, and new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with M3 chips.

MacRumors is adding to this list with the possibility of new color options for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, alongside new colors for iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands. These have not been leaked or rumored so far, but could be likely based on precedent.

Other possible products could be a new Apple TV device, a new HomePod with a screen, and the iPhone SE 4. However, these devices may not be ready and are unlikely to launch at this time.

What Apple products are you looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below!

Google Pixel Watch 3 wishlist: All the features I want to see

Google got off to a slightly rocky start when it released its first smartwatch in 2022, but it didn’t take the company long to find its way. The Google Pixel Watch 2 is one of the best smartwatches on the market and has a long list of great features. Of course, nothing is perfect. Although we have a long time before a new model arrives, here’s my wishlist for what I’d like to see from the Google Pixel Watch 3.

Fitbit Inspire 4 wishlist: All the features I want to see

    0

Fitbit’s small-form fitness trackers have represented a bright spot in the company’s confusing landscape these past two years. While Google’s Pixel Watch line seemed to kneecap Fitbit’s in-house smartwatches, the brand’s Charge and Inspire lineups remain fantastic buys from Fitbit’s stable. The budget-friendly Inspire 3, in particular, is one of the best affordable trackers I’ve tested in recent years, with an attractive display, reliable heart rate monitoring, and incredible battery life.

At the end of my Fitbit Inspire 3 review, I gave the device a coveted 4.5-star rating and an Editor’s Choice award. More than a year later, I’m still impressed by the device, but I’ve started a wish list for what I’d like to see when the Fitbit Inspire 4 hits the market.

Clamshell foldable phones have been around for just under five years now, and these pocket-friendly devices have typically retailed for ~$1,000. But brands like Motorola and TECNO joined the party last year with devices for under $800.

Fast-forward to MWC 2024, and there’s no shortage of affordable foldable flip phones on the show floor. Most consumers haven’t heard of these brands, though. Sure, there’s Nubia and its €599 Nubia Flip 5G. But we also have devices from ultra-niche brands, such as the BlackView Hero 10 and Doogee Flip X. Even the company behind Energizer-branded phones has revealed the Ultimate U660S foldable for a claimed price of €500.

I love the Garmin HRM-FIT’s accuracy, but I’m sticking with my sweaty old chest strap — here’s why

    0

Not every female-centric fitness hurdle needs a tech-based solution. When I’m ready to stop choking on my own hair as my unruly ponytail swings across my face, for example, I can probably braid it. However, there are many real shortcomings in fitness trackers and equipment designed for men first. In light of this, seeing a company prioritize women and female designers is always exciting. The Garmin HRM-FIT is one of the latest wellness tools launched with women in mind. The device provides an alternative way of monitoring heart rates, and after two weeks of testing, I’m impressed by its accuracy, even if I’m not ready to adopt the new design.

Nothing Phone 2a first look: The Glyphs are lit

    • Nothing showed off the Nothing Phone 2a at MWC 2024.
    • The phone has the distinct Nothing look, including three Glyph lights on the back.
    • It also looks to be about the same size as the Nothing Phone 2.

At Mobile World Congress 2024, we’ve seen a whole bunch of new tech. Today, though, we saw one of the more exciting smartphone launches of the week: the Nothing Phone 2a.

At a Barcelona restaurant packed with journalists, Nothing “unboxed” the Phone 2a by literally pulling apart two large boxes covering a display case with the Phone 2a inside. Because of the way it was propped, we could only see the back of it. However, that’s where a lot of interesting stuff is happening.

Mobile VR headsets: What are your best options?

    0

Mobile VR has come to mean something very different in 2024. Just a few years ago, inserting your smartphone into a headset was a great and relatively cheap way to enjoy virtual reality. Those efforts never achieved much popularity however, so the best mobile VR has evolved into standalone headsets like the Meta Quest. Otherwise most headsets are still tethered to a PC or console, such as the Valve Index, Bigscreen Beyond, or PSVR 2.

Apple’s entry into the market has further shaken things up. We’ll have to wait to see its long-term effects, but even two years from now, this list could look radically different.

Meta Quest headsets to start collecting ‘anonymized’ data after next update

    • Meta emailed Meta Quest headset owners to announce it would begin collecting “anonymized” data after the next software update.
    • The data will include information on hand and body movement, eye tracking, your physical environment, and more.
    • The company claims it will use the data to build better experiences.

Meta’s Quest headsets are some of the most popular VR devices on the market. However, privacy concerns have kept some people away from the brand. Meta’s latest announcement won’t do anything to assuage those feelings either.

Meta already makes it known that it collects certain types of data on its Quest platform on the company’s help center. This data is said to be used to “ensure your Meta Quest products work as intended, to implement your settings, and to maintain safety, security and integrity.” However, it appears there will be some changes in the near future.

Samsung Galaxy A55 leak may have revealed full specs, price, and launch

    0
    • The Galaxy A55 might adopt a flatter design and switch to a more premium build.
    • The phone is expected to pack a faster processor but similar cameras as the A54.
    • The leak claims the Galaxy A55 will sell for €449 (around $470 USD) and could make its debut in mid-March.

Last year’s Galaxy A54 continues to hold its ground as one of Samsung’s best offerings, delivering exceptional value for users worldwide. However, the launch of its successor, the Galaxy A55, is inching closer every day. Thanks to a recent leak by Winfuture, we now have a clearer picture of what the Galaxy A55 could bring to the table and how it will differ from its predecessor. Let’s dive into the details and see if the Galaxy A55 is a worthy upgrade.

    Design and display

Previously, leaked renders had suggested that the Galaxy A55 might embrace a flatter design language, mirroring the recent shift seen in the flagship Galaxy S24 series. Today’s leak appears to support that assumption, while also revealing something a little more surprising about the build. While retaining the signature vertically aligned triple-camera setup on the back, the A55 might undergo a significant material upgrade.

Apple Arcade has the ‘smell of death’ around it, devs say

    • A new report doesn’t paint a pretty picture of how Apple is handling its subscription gaming service.
    • Game developers describe Apple as “famously vindictive” and “spiteful” in its dealings, with one dev saying Apple Arcade has the “smell of death” around it.
    • The company may be preparing to reboot the service to better compete with Netflix’s gaming service.

Apple Arcade launched back in 2019, offering a subscription service that would bring new premium games to the platform without in-app purchases or advertisements. Since then, the service has declined in a way that has game developers wondering about its future.

In a report from mobilegamer.biz, a number of game devs are raising concerns about Apple Arcade. The outlet’s sources are citing various issues with declining payouts, canceled projects, the company’s apathy toward the service, and more.

    • Lenovo has revealed a variety of laptops at MWC 2024.
    • The company’s most eye-catching product is the ThinkBook Transparent Display concept.
    • The manufacturer also announced a variety of other commercial laptops.

Lenovo is a fixture at trade shows, and the company had several announcements up its sleeve for Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024.

Perhaps the most notable reveal was its ThinkBook Transparent Display concept laptop. As the name implies, this concept features a 17.3-inch transparent microLED screen (1,000 nits) and transparent virtual keyboard area. The latter can also transform into a virtual drawing board with the aid of a supported pen.

It’s Day Zero of MWC 2024 and one of the first companies to launch new products is HONOR.

HONOR has had a strong 2023 and it’s looking to extend its hot streak with a batch of new products. That obviously includes smartphones, like the Magic 6 Pro, but HONOR is also dabbling in the laptop space with its MagicBook series. Never one to let a good trend go to waste, HONOR is betting on AI as the big selling point of its new lineup. Here’s what we think about the HONOR MagicBook 16 Pro, the company’s first “AI PC.”

    • HMD has revealed that it will launch a Barbie-branded flip phone later this year.
    • This will be a feature phone rather than a full-fledged Android device.
    • The manufacturer also outlined plans for a more customizable smartphone with interchangeable rear covers.

HMD announced late last year that it would launch its own branded phones in 2024 after solely offering Nokia phones. Now, the company has used MWC 2024 to reveal plans for a rather different flip phone.

The smartphone manufacturer confirmed plans to launch a Barbie-branded flip phone in July 2024. This will be a feature phone rather than an Android phone. HMD hasn’t revealed the phone’s operating system (or other specs), but the company has previously used the KaiOS platform for several feature phones.
