Emoji dominated chat platforms for ages, giving users a quick way to express themselves without words. However, in October 2018, WhatsApp rolled out sticker support for the platform which gave users a quirky alternative to GIFs and emoji. More recently, a tip suggested that users may soon be able to create stickers from photos, giving the medium a more personal slant.

But how many of you use WhatsApp stickers as they are right now? It’s a question we posed in a recent poll, and the results are now in.

With smartphone battery capacities increasing alongside the introduction of more power-hungry hardware, fast charging on modern-day smartphones has become a feature most of us take for granted. Many Android devices these days can be fully charged up within an hour or less. And while we have several competing fast-charging protocols in the industry today, Quick Charge was and still is among the most widely used of them all.

In the context of modern handheld smartphones, Quick Charge refers to a power management technology developed by Qualcomm. It’s supported by all Snapdragon SoCs dating back to 2013, although it’s up to device manufacturers to implement. Over the years, however, Quick Charge has seen numerous changes and revisions — some more impactful than others.

Why are your favorite streaming TV shows canceled after one season?

    0
Y The Last Man TV shows canceled after one season
    Credit: FX

TV has been fundamentally changed by the advent of streaming. It’s not just that cable providers are scrambling to keep subscribers. The basic structure of shows is changing, and the economic models that once determined if something was a hit or not just aren’t relevant now. A show can start trending in its third season once audiences binge their way through earlier episodes. So why are so many streaming TV shows canceled after one season? And why are streamers so eager to make that call?

One of the latest TV shows canceled early was Y: The Last Man. If you’re like me, you may have been surprised to see Y: The Last Man launch without much fanfare. The comic book adaptation premiered exclusively on Hulu as an “FX on Hulu” original in September 2021. Weeks before its finale, though, showrunner Eliza Clark let fans know that FX had declined to renew it for season two via Twitter.

The end of smartphones with headphone jacks is nigh, even on budget devices

    Opinion post by
    Roger Fingas

The death of the 3.5mm headphone jack on smartphones — all smartphones, that is, not just expensive flagships where it’s already a rarity — is something many of us have been afraid of. But it has been on the horizon since at least 2016, when Apple had the self-proclaimed “courage” to remove the jack from the iPhone 7. Despite attacking that position in marketing, Samsung would eventually join suit with the Galaxy Note 10 in 2019, meaning that the two biggest players in the smartphone world were on board.

In fact, the writing was probably on the wall much earlier. The first major phone to ditch 3.5mm was the Oppo Finder in 2012 — the move was simply premature, since alternative headphones were less practical at the time and Oppo lacked market influence. Apple and Samsung not only had their own wireless earbuds ready to go, but the clout to make the transition stick. Since then, Apple’s AirPods have become wildly successful, Samsung’s Galaxy Buds have plenty of fans too, and it’s increasingly common for phones to ship without any bundled headphones.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 vs Apple AirPods (3rd generation): Platform face-off

    0

High switching costs have made it increasingly difficult to jump from one platform to the other. The Apple AirPods (3rd generation) build on the company’s dominance in the true wireless earbuds market by introducing more features limited to Apple devices. Similarly, Samsung has locked the software features of the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 behind an app that is only available on Android devices.

Even with these platform limitations in mind, Samsung and Apple users may be peering over the walls of their garden to see what the other side has to offer. In this head-to-head, we’ll be comparing the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and Apple AirPods (3rd gen) to see if either is worth jumping ship for.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week – Android Apps Weekly

    0

Welcome to the 408th edition of Android Apps Weekly. Here are the big headlines from the last week:

    • WhatsApp now lets you make your own stickers. The feature was spotted in a beta release of the app. Basically, you choose images from your gallery, crop them down, and it creates a sticker. The feature is only available on the beta release on PC for right now, but we assume the mobile versions should get it eventually. Hit the link to learn more.
    • WhatsApp is also letting users react to messages. It’s mostly for helping decrease clutter and keep up with Apple’s iMessage and other platforms. There are only six emoji available according to sources but we imagine that it’ll expand over time. Check out the link to see what it’ll look like and how to use it.
    • The latest Wallpaper Wednesday had some nice wallpapers in it. There were a few portrait images for phones and even a couple of landscape wallpapers for desktops. I actually took a screenshot of my character from Destiny 2 to include in this week’s version of it and it’s a pretty decent little 4K screenshot.
    • We received more information about AetherSX2, the upcoming PlayStation 2 emulator. The PCSX2 development team posted a blog post about it. Apparently, the developers of the two projects are hashing out some licensing terms, but everything seems to be going smoothly. Everything should get worked out before the app’s official launch.
    • One of the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals for apps is Hulu. It’s offering a $0.99 per month plan that lasts for an entire year. It’s for the $6.99 plan that includes streaming with advertising, but that’s still a great deal for folks who want to expand their streaming library. Hit the link for more details.

It’s been three months since Samsung started selling the Galaxy Watch 4, the latest iteration in its Galaxy Watch series and the first one to eschew Tizen for Google’s homegrown wearable platform. Unlike every other Wear OS manufacturer, Samsung was given many liberties with its watch. It runs a more customized skin than what we’ve seen from the likes of Fossil or Mobvoi, it connects with Samsung’s special Galaxy Wear app instead of Google’s generic one, and it privileges Samsung services. This is true for health and activity tracking, mobile payments, and voice commands. However, while you already have the option to install Google Fit and Pay on the Watch 4, Assistant is still nowhere to be found.

A small Android TV projector in my kitchen solved my streaming woes

    Rita El Khoury

I have a rule in my home: The TV is for the living room. I don’t like seeing massive idle black screens in every room, and I certainly don’t like to have any distractions in the bedroom. But there are rare instances where I’m too exhausted or too busy, and I wish I could watch my favorite shows or teams while doing the dishes or before collapsing asleep. For every problem, there’s a solution, and this one requires a temporary “screen” that disappears when not needed, isn’t too tempting to use all the time, but is still practical enough to set up when wanted. I tried using an iPad for a while, then a smart display, but the real winner was a portable Android TV projector.

I’m currently touting the Xgimi Mogo Pro projector ($499 on Amazon) in my kitchen, which runs Android TV 9.0, has a 1080p image at 300 ANSI Lumens, plays audio through two 3W speakers, and offers USB and HDMI inputs too.
