Huawei’s Mate series of flagships has been around for ages now, usually delivering well-rounded flagship phones. The Chinese manufacturer unfortunately skipped a Mate series release last year due to US sanctions, but it’s back in 2022 with the newly launched Mate 50 series.

We’ve got three phones this year, namely the Mate 50, Mate 50 Pro, and Mate 50 RS. All three phones are powered by a 4G version of the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC and offer an IP68 rating, 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging capabilities, and Harmony OS 3.

How Honor is leaving Huawei behind and planning to conquer Western markets

It’s been 20 months since Huawei sold Honor under the pressure of looming US sanctions and dissociated itself entirely from its former sub-brand. But you’d be forgiven if you thought the two companies were operating under the same roof until this very day. A simple look at the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Honor Magic 4 Pro, or the Huawei P50 series and Honor 70 series would tell you that the similarities the two brands shared over their existence are still there, and they run more than a little skin-deep.

But things have been changing behind the scenes. It’s a case of the understudy being told to get on stage under thousands of spotlights, then struggling between carrying the legacy of their predecessor and affirming their own identity.

Reduce, reuse, recycle. It’s a simple slogan that summarizes what we should all do to reduce our impact on the planet. But let’s be honest, most of us only think about the third tenet and forget about the others. And while recycling is important, it’s just as essential to reduce our consumption and reuse whatever we can.

My personal highlight of IFA 2022 is a small German company called Second Ride, which aims to encourage the reuse of existing vehicles. Namely, decades-old mopeds and motorcycles that would otherwise be scrapped.

I am at IFA 2022 this weekend, my first real-life event since the before times. Wondering the labyrinthine halls of the Messe convention center, it’s pretty obvious that everyone’s still a bit out of it. That includes bleary-eyed journalists, but the general lack of focus was more visible in the list of products that debuted at the show. It was kind of a snooze-fest, with one notable exception: foldable-screen laptops.

After checking out the first two foldable laptops on the market, I am convinced: Foldable laptops make more sense than foldable phones. Here’s why you should keep an eye on this new product category.

IFA 2022 represents the first full-scale, in-person trade show in years. Honor 70

At IFA 2022, Honor announced its striking mid-ranger, the Honor 70. The Honor 70 looks and feels great and it’s the first phone with the Sony IMX800 image sensor. But what really sets it apart from the modern smartphone crowd is that it’s actually priced reasonably, at just €549 (8GB+128GB)/€599 (8GB+256GB) and we think that makes the Honor 70 a wise investment in these inflationary times. Available now on Honor’s website.

With its new Intercom, Ring is aiming to do for apartment owners and renters what it’s already done for those who live in houses: provide an easy way to communicate with whoever rings the door. The company announced the product at IFA 2022 and we were able to check it out in action and see what it’s all about.

First, picture this. You’re not home and you get a call from a person delivering something to you ahead of time. Or from the plumber who was supposed to check the faulty solar panel installed on your building’s roof and who kept ignoring appointments, then showed up the one day you decided to step out (this one is a true, personal story). What do you do? You ask them to randomly try other apartments in the building, you scramble to figure out a way to let them in, or you stall them until you’ve rushed back home.

In 2014, Samsung launched the Galaxy Note Edge. The phone was notable for having a single curved side, which was one of the first times we had seen this design technology. The device was a hot talking point for a bit, but consumers weren’t particularly interested in shelling out for one. Flat Android phones continued to be the norm and Samsung phones with “Edge” branding eventually faded into obscurity.

However, the curved display — or “waterfall display,” as it’s sometimes called — has continued to exist. Sure, it hasn’t been a star feature of phones like Samsung tried to do with the Note Edge and subsequent Galaxy S6 Edge, but it continues to be a hallmark of a more premium smartphone experience. Devices such as the Galaxy S22 Ultra, OnePlus 10 Pro, and Google Pixel 6 Pro all have curved sides, for example. Meanwhile, the less expensive counterparts of those three phones all have flat displays.

We’ve had to wait a little bit this year, but the Sony Xperia 5 IV is officially here. Nestled between the ultra-premium Xperia 1 IV, which costs an extraordinary $1,599 in the US, and the affordable Xperia 10 IV, the Xperia 5 IV is about as close as Sony gets to an “everyman” that fans with less deep pockets might feasibly pick up. Priced at £949 in the UK, and according to Sony an estimated $1,000 when it launches in October, it’s still not exactly cheap and once again more expensive than last year, but it’s not the cost that’s left me a bit disappointed. No, it’s the lack of Sony’s variable focal length periscope camera.

For the uninitiated, Sony’s variable focal length camera offers seamless optical zoom between 85mm and 125mm, removing the reliance on digital zoom between 3.5x and 5.2x. Not only does this improve image quality but also benefits from natural bokeh and compression as you move through the focal lengths, more closely matching the experience you’ll receive from high-end cameras. You can see some examples below and more in our Xperia 1 IV review.

Everyone’s a winner in IFA’s race for the biggest TV

Credit: Robert Triggs / Android Authority

Trudging the halls at IFA 2022 has left me with two key takeaways: I look forward to my next home appliance failing when the Wi-Fi drops, and I’m going to need a bigger living room for my next TV. There’s an arm’s race of sorts taking place between LG, TCL, and Samsung to expand their cutting-edge display technologies into the biggest TV they can possibly brag about. Few have breached the 100-inch mark yet, an achievement they’ll no doubt pop the champagne to next year, but with multiple 97-inch and 98-inch flagship models on show, you’re not short of options for that gargantuan home cinema.

Samsung’s 98-inch Neo QLED was the first model I came across, boasting a 4K resolution, a colossal 5,000 nits of peak brightness, and Neo Quantum Processor Plus processor with multi-view support. It’s obviously impressively humungous. Although it’s not quite as big as Samsung’s microLED-based The Wall, it’s a more “mainstream” quantum dot LCD panel that will cost several thousand rather than tens of thousands of dollars when it finally arrives in the US and Europe.

Huawei’s slow drift into consumer tech obscurity has been a sad sight to witness. In what now feels like an overnight switch, a juggernaut on course for world domination shrank into an industry minnow, with the US trade ban effectively crippling its mobile strategy outside of its homeland of China.

Of course, its phones were hit the hardest, with some canceled and others severely limited by the lack of familiar app stores and services. Other categories fared slightly better. Huawei continues to make quality true wireless earbuds and its wearables are still exquisitely designed. In spite of their individual qualities, however, it’s been tricky to wholeheartedly recommend otherwise wonderful accessories that only really excel when paired with a compromised Huawei smartphone.

    • A leaked promotional video of the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra has leaked online.
    • The promo shows that the device will be the first phone to ever have a 200MP camera.

In a tweet released today, leaker Evan Blass showed off a promo for the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. The interesting thing here isn’t necessarily the phone itself, but rather the camera sensor.

In the minute-long video, we get a close-up of a 200MP camera sensor on the back of the handset. This would make it the biggest camera sensor on any smartphone currently available.

    • Samsung was hit by a cyberattack in late July.
    • On August 4, the company found that the cyberattack had compromised the personal information of some of its customers.
    • The attack may have revealed customer names, contact and demographic information, date of birth, and product registration information.

If you’re a Samsung customer in the United States, then you may have been impacted by a recent security breach of the company.

Today, Samsung has announced on its support page that its US-based systems have experienced a cybersecurity incident. It appears that in late July, an unauthorized third party managed to acquire certain personal information of some of the company’s customers according to Samsung.

Samsung’s latest foldables doubled shipments in one key region

    • Samsung has claimed that Galaxy Z4 shipments doubled in Europe over last year’s foldables.
    • It didn’t reveal specific shipment figures in this regard.
    • The Galaxy Z Flip 4 accounted for 60% of sales in the region so far.

Samsung has a long-term plan to make foldable phones mainstream devices, and it’s certainly achieved more sales success with each successive generation of Fold and Flip devices. However, it looks like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 are helping in a big way thanks to initial sales.

“Shipments of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 doubled those of previous models in the European market, as the first sales figures of the new products reached an all-time high in Europe,” Samsung European marketing chief Benjamin Braun noted at a press conference at IFA 2022 (h/t: Korea Times).

How to cancel Amazon Music Unlimited

    0

If you don’t want to use Amazon’s Music Unlimited service anymore, canceling it is a pretty straightforward process. It only takes a minute or two and there are multiple ways of doing it, depending on where you signed up for it.

However, you can’t end your subscription through the Amazon Music app itself, which is a bit strange. So to get the job done, you’ll have to use a web browser or go through the Apple App Store if you purchased a subscription that way.

    • Samsung has issued a new video mocking Apple and highlighting Galaxy features.
    • The ad shows off the Galaxy Z Flip 4 design and Galaxy S22 Ultra camera functions.

“Buckle up for Apple’s latest launch, as you enter a world where heads will turn, just not in your direction,” notes a narrator in a new Samsung video promoting the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Rumor suggests Google is still working on a foldable, likely to come in 2023

    • Google is starting to shift the production of its phones to a new location.
    • Some of its phones will continue to be made in China.
    • A rumor suggests that one of the phones that will still be made in China is Google’s foldable phone.

Like most phone makers these days, Google is beginning to move its production operations out of China due to geopolitical tensions and disruptive factory shutdowns. However, it will continue to use Taiwan-based Foxconn for some of its phones, possibly including its anticipated foldable.

According to The New York Times, Google plans on having as much as half of its high-end phones coming out of Vietnam next year. However, the company will still need China for more complicated manufacturing, like what would be required for a foldable phone.
