  • As a MagSafe fan, I can’t wait for Qi2 to come to Android

Qi2 wireless charging is taking its sweet time to officially show up on phones and accessories. The faster, magnet-guided, wireless charging standard was announced early in 2023, with promised availability around October. We’re nearly in December without a single Qi2-compatible phone in sight, unless you count the iPhone 15 series (which supposedly has it, because Qi2 is unofficially backward-compatible with MagSafe).

On the Android side, the Pixel 8 series missed on Qi2 by a hair and Google fans would, supposedly, have to wait until the Pixel 9 series in October 2024 to get it. Rumors about more imminent flagships like the OnePlus 12 and Galaxy S24 haven’t mentioned Qi2 yet. Personally, I think the info would already be out in the wild if these phones had Qi2’s big metallic array, which makes me doubt it’s there.

My Kindle highlights were a mess until I started using Readwise

Credit: Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority

I’ve been a compulsive highlighter and note-taker on the Kindle ever since I got my first e-reader back in 2010. I go through dozens of books every year and generate hundreds of highlights of interesting quotes, technical data, or just well-written prose. But anyone who’s used a Kindle for any amount of time will know that managing highlights can be a real chore. Despite making some of the best e-readers and one of the best ebook reading apps around, Amazon still treats storing and reviewing those important nuggets as an afterthought.

I've spent hundreds of hours collecting highlights, but the Kindle won't sync those unless I stay within the Amazon ecosystem.

Yes, I’m aware that the Kindle automatically syncs highlights to the website — as long as the book was purchased via Amazon. However, I like to read a lot of copyright-free books sourced via Project Gutenberg, scientific journals, and ebooks straight bought straight from the author’s website. The Kindle entirely skips syncing highlights on those, making the built-in solution a non-starter for me.

These are my 5 favorite One UI 6.0 features

    0
One UI 6 is the biggest and most recent update rolling out widely across Samsung’s expansive smartphone lineup. However, this is largely an iterative bump that builds upon all the existing One UI features, so you might be pressed to find many really new features in One UI 6. I’ve been using it since the first betas started rolling out, and personally, there’s enough here to keep me content. Here are my top five features in One UI 6 on my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung Internet lets you play videos in the background

This isn’t a One UI 6 feature per se, since you can get it on other devices with the latest Samsung Internet browser installed. Nonetheless, it’s mentioned as part of the One UI 6 changelog, and it is easier to spot on Samsung phones that come with the Internet app preloaded.

With background play enabled, you can practically play any video in the background. I’m not subscribed to YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium (I’m more of a Spotify person), but I like to listen to the occasional playlist of fan covers. Samsung Internet makes it possible for me to run a playlist on YouTube (accessed from the browser and not through the YouTube app, of course) and push that tab to the background without interrupting playback.

    10 best emulators for Chromebook

    0
ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip review 17
Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

Chromebooks are fantastic machines with light software that works well under most circumstances. They are great for everyday work, such as sending emails and browsing the web. A good Chrome OS laptop can even handle some photo/video editing. Did you know you can also do some gaming with Chrome OS? Of course, you can enjoy Android games, but a wide variety of emulators are also available. Let’s look at some of the best emulators for Chromebook computers.

Is it legal to use emulators?

First things first, we must let you know that emulators are in a bit of a gray area in terms of legality. Using emulators, in and of itself, isn’t necessarily illegal, at least in most jurisdictions. The thing is, you’ll need ROM files of the games you’ll play. Downloading and/or distributing ROMs can count as pirating.

Android not receiving texts from iPhone? Here’s how you can try to fix it

    0

Notoriously, Apple doesn’t like to play nice with Android. Steve Jobs called the operating system “stolen,” and there are a number of arbitrary barriers between the two platforms — in the iPhone’s Messages app, non-Apple devices are flagged with green bubbles, and the company only recently conceded the need to support RCS messaging. You should still able to get SMS and MMS messages from an iPhone if you’re an Android user, however — here’s how to fix things if you’re not.

    • The feature should be available widely in the coming months.

Pixel 8 Pro’s Video Boost feature is almost here as code appears in Photos app

    • A teardown of the latest version of Android’s Google Photos app shows code suggesting the Google Pixel 8 Pro Video Boost feature is coming very soon.
    • This feature allows for computational AI smarts to boost the visual look of a video.
    • Google said this was coming in December, and that’s on track.

In October, Google launched the Pixel 8 series of smartphones. During the launch, the company announced the Google Pixel 8 Pro Video Boost feature. This brings computational AI smarts to video for the first time on a Pixel. In order for it to work, you need to upload a video file to the cloud, where Google’s servers then process every single frame just like your phone would do on-device for a still photo. You then download the processed video.

Although Google announced this feature in October, the company said it wouldn’t be available until December 2023. Now, thanks to an APK teardown of the latest Google Photos app for Android (v.6.63.0.586138124), we can see Google is on track with this goal. We can also get a few ideas on how the feature might work.

After a string of severe outages in recent days, it looks like we have more issues to report for OpenAI’s ChatGPT service. According to DownDetector, there are already thousands of reports of problems using ChatGPT.

User reports aren’t as reliable as official reports from a company itself. To its credit, OpenAI has not disclosed an outage, at least not according to its status page. In the past, OpenAI has been good about posting problems here, so it’s possible users are seeing a very temporary glitch in the system.

Investigation reveals AT&T and US government have been spying on millions of Americans for years

    • Documents reviewed by Wired have revealed details of a secret call surveillance program run by the US government with the help of AT&T.
    • Millions of Americans have been spied on by law enforcement without their knowledge and without good cause.
    • AT&T has reportedly been storing and sharing call records of its subscribers with authorities for over a decade.

Big Brother is Watching you. George Orwell’s words from the dystopian novel 1984 ring uncomfortably true after reading this recent investigative report published by Wired. The outlet has analyzed leaked police documents, a White House memo, and a letter sent by US Senator Ron Wyden to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to verify the existence of a secret government surveillance program run by the US government and executed by telecom carrier AT&T.

Google Pixel Fold 2 wishlist: All the features I want to see

The Pixel Fold marks Google’s first foray into the foldable space and while it’s far from perfect, it’s a pretty solid first effort. Still, there are many things we’d like to see improved on the Google Pixel Fold 2. Although it’s likely still over a half year away, it’s fun to speculate what the new Fold 2 might bring to the table. Here is my wishlist for the Google Pixel Fold 2.

In 2016, T-Mobile’s then-CEO John Legere announced a new feature for subscribers: T-Mobile Tuesdays. Each week, subscribers could get a special freebie, discount, or deal. The company rolled out a special app for this, which alerts you every Tuesday when the new promotion is live.

In the first few years of its existence, the Tuesdays program was awesome. There were free gift cards for popular eateries at a $5 value, including Starbucks and Dunkin’. You could also often get totally free movie tickets. And, of course, we can’t forget the free Domino’s pizza weeks, which probably caused many Domino’s employees to quit their jobs due to the overwhelming demand.

Kindle Paperwhite vs Nook GlowLight 4 Plus: Which should you buy?

There’s something to be said for e-ink readers.  In an age of TikTok, Netflix, Facebook, and YouTube, they not only encourage you to read, but shut out distractions and relax. At the moment there are only three major brands in North America  — Amazon, Nook, and Kobo — and of those, only the first two have a substantial footprint. Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite and the Nook GlowLight 4 Plus are two of the most prominent readers available — so how do they stack up?

These huge Beats Black Friday deals are music to our ears

    0

Some would say that Beats is more than headphones and earbuds; it’s a lifestyle. That might be a bit cringy for you, but what you are guaranteed is quality audio hardware. Black Friday is usually the best time to upgrade your Beats headphones, and 2023 is no different. Many of the top Beats products are at their best-ever prices today — some over 50% off.

The Beats Studio Pro deal below is probably the most eye-catching, but we really love the deal on the Beats Studio Buds. The wireless earbuds are just $89.95, representing a $60 discount and the joint-lowest price we’ve ever tracked. Not only do they have universal compatibility across Android and Apple devices, but also a lightweight design and secure fit make them ideal for active users. They feature IPX4 water resistance, effective active noise cancelation, and transparency modes, plus sound quality is on-point. At this deal price, they’re affordable for a lot of buyers.

The new Liberty 4 NC drop to just $69.99 in the Anker Soundcore sale

In its Soundcore line, Anker hit the sweet spot between functionality and affordability. So, for those looking to upgrade their audio this Black Friday week, this Soundcore sale will be music to their ears. There are dozens of headphones and earbuds deals from the brand to explore today, with as much as 53% in savings to be had.

The deal we were immediately drawn to was the Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC for just $69.99. While the 30% markdown might not be the biggest of the sale, these impressive buds were only released in the summer, marking an all-time low price. Scoring an 8.1-star rating from our sister site, SoundGuys, is no mean feat for a pair of wireless earbuds in this price range, but they punch above their weight. Solid ANC, good sound, and strong battery life were just three of the standout features for the experts at SG.

Spotify tacitly admits it will go out of business if it gives artists fair pay

    • Spotify plans to pull its service out of Uruguay after the passing of a bill that would require “fair and equitable remuneration” for artists.
    • The streaming platform states that “additional payments would make our business untenable.”
    • If the bill isn’t changed, Spotify says it will begin phasing out the service on January 1, 2024.

Pay has been a sticking point between Spotify and artists for years now. A new bill in Uruguay aims to fix the problem, but Spotify is threatening to leave the country if the bill isn’t changed.

According to The Guardian, Uruguay’s government voted on a budget bill in October that included two articles related to streaming media. Article 284 says that social media and the internet are to be added “as formats for which, if a song is reproduced, the performer is entitled to financial remuneration.” While article 285 states that the “right to a fair and equitable remuneration” will be added to copyright law. By remuneration, these articles are referring to authors, composers, performers, directors, and screenwriters.
