    • YouTube TV on Android and iOS now has background play.
    • Background play allows users to continue listening even after locking their device or leaving the app.
    • The feature was previously a YouTube Premium exclusive.

If you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber, then you’re probably familiar with the background play feature. It allows you to continue listening to a video even after you lock your device or navigate away from the app. Now that fan favorite feature is making its way to the YouTube TV app.

Previously, background play was a feature that you could only use on YouTube as a Premium subscriber. Since you also pay for YouTube TV, you would think the feature would be on there as well. But that wasn’t the case until now.

Pixels get double-tap action to turn the screen off with new third-party app

    0
    • A new third-party app called Pixel ToolBox brings some features to Pixels that aren’t officially supported.
    • Notably, one feature includes the ability to double-tap on the home screen to lock the phone, something Samsung Galaxy phones can do.
    • The app is free with some ads, but a one-time fee removes ads and unlocks some special features.

When it comes to picking your favorite Android skin, most folks usually come down on one of two sides: One UI, which appears on Samsung Galaxy phones, and Pixel UI, which appears on Google’s Pixel phones. The problem is that one skin will have features the other doesn’t have, which might make picking the real winner difficult.

Thankfully, a new third-party app helps bridge the divide between team Samsung and team Google. Jawomo — the developer behind some popular apps, such as one that brings Apple’s Dynamic Island to Android phones — has a new app called Pixel ToolBox. This free, ad-supported app brings four features to any Pixel phone that currently don’t exist in an official form. One of these features is something One UI users have enjoyed for a long time: the ability to double-tap on the home or lock screens to turn the screen off.

Circle to Search could be picking up a powerful new tool for videos (APK teardown)

    0
    • Google may be adding the ability to use Circle to Search on videos.
    • While Google offers tools for using Gemini on YouTube clips, this feature may extend to all videos.
    • Right now the tool is not yet operational.

Keeping track of all the different ways Google gives us to search for things is practically a full-time job. We’ve got web browsers, widgets on our phones, Assistant, Gemini, and probably half a dozen other ways to tap into the company’s services at any given moment — and that list’s only getting bigger. Today we’re checking out what could be a way to start unifying some of these disparate routes, all in the name of making it easier to search videos.

Right now, Google gives you a few ways to start your search with a video. With AI Overview, you can use a video recording to initiate a search through Lens. And when you’re watching videos on YouTube, you can pull up Gemini and use its “ask about this video” tool. But Google might be working on a more general-purpose way to let you search basically any video.

With hardware advancements slowing down in recent years, smartphone makers have started turning to software to set themselves apart. The latest flagship smartphones from Apple, Google, and Samsung all loudly proclaim AI as a key selling point. But even though all companies use the same underlying technology, their individual implementations couldn’t be more different. So in this Google Pixel AI vs Samsung Galaxy AI comparison, let’s dissect their unique approaches and determine which Android giant truly reigns supreme in the AI arena.

Google Pixel AI vs Samsung Galaxy AI: Photography, editing, audio

Long before the AI era, computational photography was pushing the boundaries of smartphone camera quality. Thanks to AI, that trend has only accelerated now, sometimes in bizarre ways. For example, both Google and Samsung allow you to add or remove objects from your shots.

Android Auto adds a crucial feature to improve road safety for US drivers

    • Android Auto users in the US can now report accidents, traffic, and other road hazards directly through their car screens.
    • This highly requested feature was previously only available through the Google Maps mobile app.

After years of requests, Google Maps on Android Auto has finally added a much-anticipated feature: the ability to report road incidents like accidents, traffic jams, and speed traps in real time. Until now, Android Auto users in the US had been left without this function despite it being available on Waze (also owned by Google). Even though you could report incidents on the Google Maps phone app, doing that while driving was obviously unsafe, which meant most drivers didn’t bother.

Incident reporting was first introduced in Google Maps for mobile devices a few years ago, but it remained exclusive to phones. Oddly, while Google Maps on Apple CarPlay received this feature earlier this year, Android Auto users were left out. This changed briefly in July when Google rolled out the feature to Android Auto as well — but only in India.

Apple might launch its first-ever smart display next year with new HomeOS

    • Apple is reportedly developing a new operating system called “HomeOS.”
    • The company is expected to launch its first smart displays running on HomeOS in 2025.
    • These new devices will offer smart home control and Apple Intelligence features.

Apple has a knack for shaking up every category it enters, but there’s been one glaring gap in its lineup: smart displays. With the Amazon Echo and Google Nest dominating living rooms, it seemed like only a matter of time before Apple would throw its hat into the ring.

That time may finally be coming, with new reports hinting that Apple could launch not one but two smart home devices as early as next year, powered by a brand-new operating system called “HomeOS.”

I test smartwatches for a living and these are the only budget smartwatches I would buy

Testing wearables for a living is a lot like living in a perpetual state of opening presents in front of the gift giver. Sometimes, a smartwatch is an absolute home run, and I can’t say enough about it. Other times, I wish I could quietly put a device back in its box. But unlike opening a present, one of the factors I evaluate in any new smartwatch is cost.

Many of my favorite finds have been budget-friendly watches and fitness trackers thoughtfully designed to bring valuable tools to more wrists. These wearables pack accurate sensors, robust tool kits, and enough basic smarts to warrant a place on my wrist without costing me an arm or a leg. Depending on your ecosystem, the devices below represent the budget smartwatches I would buy.

Samsung still hasn’t nailed sleep tracking, especially on its newest form factor

After over a month with Samsung’s tiniest fitness tracker, I’m still not sold on keeping the device in my bedtime routine. Sleep tracking on the Galaxy Ring hasn’t stood up against other trusted devices, and one feature has annoyed me to no end. Considering overnight wear is one of the smart ring’s biggest selling points, I’m disappointed to say the least.

I wasn’t convinced by Gemini, but the Pixel 9 is bringing me around

    0

I’ve never been a big fan of voice assistants. I’ve had Google Assistant in my pocket for years, yet I don’t think I’ve relied on it for much more than turning on my smart lights or setting kitchen timers. Honestly, I don’t love speaking out loud to an assistant when I can get the same result with a few quick taps. So, when my colleague Rita asked me to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini and see how I got along, I put it off as long as possible. After all, if I didn’t want to talk to a robot before, why would I want to talk to one now?

As it turns out, I just needed the right kind of robot. I needed Gemini, but I needed it on the Pixel 9 series before I felt confident Google knew what it was doing. Here’s what I learned from switching assistants.

Microsoft’s beefed up Recall security model includes a blessed uninstall option

    0
    • After months of controversy, Microsoft is finally confirming the ability to uninstall Recall.
    • The company has done a full review of Recall’s security, and explains why users should trust it.
    • Recall will finally be available for testing on Copilot Plus PCs in October.

Big companies don’t need to listen to the little guy, right? Progress is coming for us all, whether we like it or not? One of the many AI-adjacent controversies to grab headlines this year has been Microsoft’s announcement of Recall, a feature for Copilot Plus PCs that uses AI processing of automatically grabbed screenshots to create a record of your historical usage. After facing delays, and rumors of an uninstall option, Microsoft is actually stepping up to explain that it hears us, that it’s made some changes to Recall in the interest of security — and that you really can uninstall it.

Recall’s power is a big reason why so many people are concerned about it. If it knows basically everything you do on your PC, anyone who has access to Recall has access to all of your data — it’s a security nightmare. And that’s part of why when the arrival of Microsoft’s KB5041865 update made it look like it would be possible to uninstall Recall, so many people were interested. At the time, though, Microsoft explained that this was in error, and it seemed like Recall would always be there, like it or not.

The Galaxy Tab S10’s stale design has at least one unexpected advantage

    • The Galaxy Tab S10 series maintains a similar design to its predecessors, benefiting buyers with cross-generation accessory compatibility.
    • Existing accessories from the Galaxy Tab S9 series can be used with the new Tab S10 models and vice-versa.

Samsung has officially unveiled its flagship tablets for 2024: the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. While they pack some notable changes under the hood, the design hasn’t strayed too far from their predecessors. But before you dismiss that as a snooze-worthy move, there’s actually a big win here for anyone already invested in Samsung’s tablet ecosystem.

As first spotted by Sammobile, Samsung has made the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra fully compatible with accessories from the Galaxy Tab S9 series — and vice versa. This means you won’t have to hunt for new accessories if you’re upgrading from last year’s models, and your accessories — like the official keyboard covers — should work flawlessly with the corresponding model from the Tab S10 series.

Samsung upgrades the budget-priced Galaxy Watch FE with LTE support

    0
    • Samsung is adding an LTE option to its budget-priced Galaxy Watch FE.
    • The LTE-connected smartwatch is priced at $249.99, or $50 more than the Wi-Fi edition
    • Launched earlier this year, the Galaxy Watch FE is based heavily on the Galaxy Watch 4.

Today’s the day when Samsung’s latest “Fan Edition” smartphone goes official, but the new Galaxy S24 FE isn’t the only FE model taking the spotlight. Earlier this year, Samsung expanded its wearable lineup with the addition of the affordably positioned Galaxy Watch FE. At its launch event this morning, Samsung is sharing a little bit about what’s next for this hardware, as well as announcing a new LTE edition.

The Galaxy Watch FE, if you’re not familiar with it, emerged a few months back as a lower priced alternative to the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra. And while the name might have you thinking that this follows the same design principles as Samsung’s FE phones — a few downgrades from the flagships, but still recent, powerful hardware — we ended up discovering that the Watch FE is for all intents and practices a rebranded and refreshed Galaxy Watch 4.

Less than a decade ago, foldable phones seemed like the stuff of sci-fi. But in 2024, there are at least a dozen foldable phones available, even though only a few are readily accessible in the United States. Today’s foldables typically fall into one of two categories: foldable phones that turn into tablets, and flip phones that resemble traditional smartphones when unfolded but feature a flip design reminiscent of phones from yesteryear.

These niche devices certainly have a market, but they could become irrelevant in the not-too-distant future. Why? In a word, rollable phones could be the real endgame here. Let’s take a look at what a rollable phone is, who’s working on it, and how it could be a superior alternative to today’s foldables.

    • Google Earth now offers historical imagery, allowing users to explore aerial photos dating back up to 80 years.
    • Street View is also expanding to nearly 80 countries, with fresh imagery added for existing countries.
    • Google also announced improvements in satellite imagery using AI to remove obstructions like haze.

Google has announced a series of enhancements to its Earth and Maps platforms aimed at providing users with a more immersive and informative experience. These updates include the introduction of historical imagery in Google Earth, a substantial expansion of Street View coverage, and the use of AI to refine satellite imagery.

A highlight of the update is the addition of historical imagery to Google Earth, allowing users to journey back in time and witness how landscapes have transformed over the decades. This feature should offer insights into the impact of human activity and climate change, presenting a stark visual record of how forests, cities, and natural features have evolved.

T-Mobile vs US Mobile: US Mobile can use all three networks, but does Tmo still stand stronger?

    0
T-Mobile has quickly become a dominant force in the mobile world, though it is far from your only choice. Not only are there two other major networks, but there are also plenty of smaller carriers that run on T-Mobile’s network. Then there’s US Mobile, which stands out on its own, thanks to its new status as the so-called “super carrier.”

US Mobile is the only prepaid carrier that can switch between all three major networks. While the process isn’t necessarily instantaneous, it can be very helpful and grants the carrier a level of flexibility unseen elsewhere. So, how does US Mobile compare to T-Mobile? Good question. Let’s dive in and take a closer look at US Mobile vs T-Mobile.

T-Mobile vs US Mobile: Pricing and value

    • Winner: US Mobile

T-Mobile has a reputation for offering better pricing than the other two major US carriers, though it’s dropped the ball a bit recently as its pricing has increased significantly in recent years. The cheapest T-Mobile plan starts at $50 for one line and offers a relatively barebones experience with no perks and even lower priority than some of its more expensive plans. There are ways to get T-Mobile’s service even cheaper, as five lines on its Essential plan will run you as low as $24 per line, but keep in mind that this doesn’t include taxes and fees.

There’s a new look on its way for Google Gemini

    0
    • Google Gemini beta testers are starting to get access to a clean new interface for Gemini’s home screen.
    • The refresh hides your chat history one tap away.
    • Gemini also gets a bit more personal, welcoming you by name, just like on the web.

Google’s been hard at work over the past few months building its Gemini chatbot into a proper, full-featured evolution of Assistant. And while there’s still a lot of work to go there, Gemini’s already proven itself to be incredibly impressive, especially when it comes to advanced functionality like Gemini Live. Beyond just developing features, Google’s also been refining the way we access Gemini, and it looks like a fresh new look for the app is currently in testing for beta users.

We spotted these changes with version 15.38.46.29 beta of the Google app, and compared to the interface we’ve been using thus far, Gemini’s working to clean up its UI for a more clutter-free look. That involves dropping the suggestions up top, and hiding a lot of the rest of what we had behind the new icon in the top left. It’s there that you’ll tap to access your history of past chats. And below, Google’s giving us easy access to Gemini’s customizable Gems, for particularly tailored conversations with the chatbot.

ASUS ROG Phone 9 wishlist: All the features I want to see

    0

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 has only been around about eight months, and even a bit less than that in the United States. So far, it’s gotten great reviews and is easily looking to be one of the best phones for gaming to date. Not only does it build on everything that comes before it, but it adds new features like dust resistance that help make it a bit more mainstream-friendly.

Even if it’s one of the best Android phones around, no phone is perfect. There are certainly a few things that could be improved upon next year with a new model. With that in mind, here is my ROG Phone 9 wishlist, as well as a quick look at all the rumors we’re currently aware of.

Samsung is notoriously conservative when it comes to hardware upgrades for its base and Plus flagship phones. Unfortunately, it sounds like you shouldn’t expect a main camera upgrade any time soon.

PSA: With RCS now on iOS, be careful when renaming group chats

    • It turns out that Android phone owners can rename a group text for iOS owners in the group.
    • Apple has long allowed any iPhone users in a group text to rename the group, though.

Apple recently released iOS 18 and one of the bigger additions is RCS support, offering a more modern messaging experience between Android phones and iPhones. However, it turns out there’s one group chat quirk you have to be aware of.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold gets an exclusive new Meet feature that seems really useful

    0

Credit: Ryan Whitwam / Android Authority
    • Recently, Google rolled out a new exclusive Google Meet feature for the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
    • The feature allows you to use both the front and inner cameras to show two live feeds at once.
    • Additionally, you can show the same feed on the inner and outer displays, allowing anyone around you to interact with the call.

In our hyper-connected world, video calls are just a way of life. Most of the time, you’ll be conducting a call on your own, but sometimes you do calls as a group with many other people physically in the same space. In those situations, it can be tricky because everyone needs to huddle around your laptop — or even worse, your smartphone. Thankfully, Google has a solution to this problem that’s exclusive to its new Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

Using Google Meet on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, you can now utilize both the inner and front-facing cameras to create a dual feed. In other words, the people you’re chatting with on the video call will be able to see you through the inner camera and then see what’s going on in front of you on the front-facing camera.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the one phone I want to carry without a case… and the one I shouldn’t

    0

Credit: Rita El Khoury / Android Authority

If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a clumsy person who should never be trusted to carry anything fragile. Despite my best efforts, I drop my phones fairly regularly, so that’s why I’ve been using TPU cases for as long as I can remember. TPU absorbs the shock of falls and bumps and has been my trusty sidekick on this tech writing and phone testing journey for over a decade.

But every time I see a foldable phone, there’s an evil little voice in my head that whispers, “You should carry this one without a case, Rita.” Every. Single. Time. But more so in recent times, as foldable phones have become so thin, so solid, and so much like regular smartphones. Gone are the days of thick bricks that can kill a man; a modern foldable like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is barely thicker than a Pixel 9 Pro XL and perfectly sized for everyday carry and use.

Jony Ive confirms partnership with OpenAI on a new piece of AI hardware, despite market failures

    • Jony Ive has confirmed that he is working with OpenAI’s Sam Altman on some sort of new AI-powered hardware device.
    • Ive was the lead designer for the early iterations of the iPhone during Jobs-era Apple.
    • So far, the major AI devices we’ve seen have failed miserably, such as the Humane Ai Pin and the Rabbit R1.

In the past year, we’ve seen a slew of devices based around generative AI that were claimed to be “the next big thing.” The Humane Ai Pin and the Rabbit R1 are two significant examples. However, both failed miserably for myriad reasons, with the most significant reason being people don’t seem to want dedicated hardware for AI services — they just want to use their smartphones.

Despite this, we’ve learned today that Jony Ive — the man most directly responsible for the designs of the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and more Apple products under Steve Jobs — is working with OpenAI’s Sam Altman on some sort of new AI-powered hardware. This was revealed in a profile on Ive in The New York Times.

The OnePlus Open is $400 off right now, reaching a record low price

Foldable smartphones are often prohibitively expensive. The best foldable smartphones usually start at around $1,800 or $1,900, and prices only rise as you upgrade the storage. I don’t know about you, but I’m not about to spend nearly two grand on a phone. The OnePlus Open price is a bit more reasonable at $1,700, but right now, you can get it much cheaper at $1,300. That’s a $400 discount and the lowest we’ve seen this phone go for.

Buy the OnePlus Open for just $1,300

The mystery of the Pixel Watch 3’s Performance Loop Band may nearly be over

    0
    • Multiple retailers are getting ready for Google’s Performance Loop Band for the Pixel Watch 3.
    • So far, it’s been spotted in Canada on Best Buy’s and Amazon’s sites, but shows as out of stock.
    • Earlier rumors pointed to a potential October release.

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Google’s latest smartwatch, the Pixel Watch 3, is out and ready for you to take home, but the same can’t be said for all of its official accessories. Right after the Watch 3 itself debuted, a mysterious “Performance Loop Band” briefly surfaced on Amazon before the listing was pulled — and we’ve been waiting for it ever since. And while it’s still not here, some recent developments suggest that Google may finally be getting around to releasing it.

Our first tease of this band arrived in the lead-up to last month’s Made By Google event, when a leak attempted to detail all the official watch bands debuting with the Pixel Watch 3. And indeed, that source suggested that the Performance Loop Band in particular would not have immediate availability, and could be delayed until sometime around the end of October.

New T-Mobile BOGO promo means you could get two lines for free, if you act quickly

    0

Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
    • T-Mobile is known for offering BOGO promotions from time to time that include benefits like a free secondary line with the activation of two new lines. Did you know you can technically stack these offers? Typically the opportunity doesn’t come up, but this time is different.
    • Right now T-Mobile has a BOGO line offer that’s about to expire. For those that take advantage this week, there are reports you’ll have a second opportunity as a new BOGO offer will go into place early next week.
    • Unless T-Mobile makes some sudden changes to its terms and provisions, those who time it right should be able to take advantage of both deals if they need four new lines.

While T-Mobile may not have as many promotions and freebies as it once did, it arguably remains the best of the big three carriers when it comes to special promotions. Need several new lines? Maybe your kids are old enough to be added to your postpaid plan, or perhaps you want to share an account with friends or family to split the savings. Whatever your reason, if you act fast, you could get two lines for free — though there are a few caveats.

One of the better deals that pops up occasionally is a BOGO (buy-one-get-one) offer where you get one phone line free via bill credits when you sign up for two new lines. Such a deal is currently active but is expected to expire soon. To take advantage of this deal, simply apply the promo code SP097 and promo ID OR21053. Sign up for two lines, and you’ll get one free.

Google Calendar is finally getting a dedicated birthday event

    0

    • Google is finally making it easier to add birthdays to Google Calendar.
    • The service is getting a new birthday event type that removes all unnecessary event properties.
    • The feature will roll out to Google Calendar on Android starting next week.

Adding birthdays to Google Calendar is an unnecessarily complicated process, as the service doesn’t have a native option to let users create birthday events. Instead, it syncs birthday information from Google Contacts, requiring users to add birthdays to contact entries to view them in their calendars. Alternatively, users have to rely on a workaround by creating a full-day yearly recurring event, which is less than ideal. Thankfully, that’s about to change soon.

Google is finally adding a dedicated birthday event to Google Calendar on mobile and web. As spotted in a teardown earlier this year, this adds a new “Birthday” chip to the event creation screen that removes all unnecessary event properties.

Google’s cute talking Pixel and iPhone are back to welcome Apple to the world of RCS

    0
    • RCS is here, and that means texting between Android and iOS just got a whole lot nicer.
    • Google brings its talking Pixel and iPhone back to help promote the accomplishment.
    • Of course, Google can’t help but criticize Apple just a bit for being this late to the party.

This week has been a big one for mobile communication, and with the release of iOS 18, iPhone users are getting their first major taste of RCS. The cross-platform messaging standard isn’t just a much-needed modernization of old-fashioned SMS text messages, but an opportunity for smartphone users everywhere to really start interacting on a level playing field. Understandably, Google is very hyped about the whole thing, and has cooked up another of its cute little anthropomorphized iPhone and Pixel ads to help share the news.

You might remember these guys from earlier appearances in the likes of the Pixel 8 afterparty, but now we’ve got our iPhone and Pixel showing up for a therapy session in what appears to be an impressively faithful recreation of Dr. Melfi’s office from The Sopranos (you knew you saw that circular table and tissues before).

    • Xiaomi has confirmed the Mix Flip will launch globally in September.
    • The phone might be unveiled at the Xiaomi 14T series launch happening on September 26.
    • The Mix Flip boasts a massive battery, super-fast charging, and powerful cameras.

Launched in China just two months ago, the Mix Flip grabbed our attention for its impressive features, positioning it as a serious competitor to established flip phones like the Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Now, after weeks of speculation, Xiaomi has confirmed the Mix Flip will be expanding to international markets soon.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the Mix Flip will be “coming to global markets this September.” Notably, the company is also launching the Xiaomi 14T series in Europe on September 26, so it’s likely that the Mix Flip could be unveiled for global markets on the same day.

YouTube’s latest UI change makes liking and disliking more tedious

    • The “Like” and “Dislike” buttons on YouTube for Android TV and Google TV have been combined into a single button.
    • If you click the new button, it will bring up a mini pop-up menu for liking or disliking.
    • The redesign adds one more step you need to follow to like or dislike a video.

Google likes to occasionally fiddle around with the layout of YouTube, often to the chagrin of its users. For example, back in April, the company tested out a new UI design that relocated the video title, description, and comments to the right-side panel. The change was widely panned at the time. Now the company is trying out a new tweak that will probably also end up being controversial.

According to 9to5Google, a change to the “Like” and “Dislike” buttons on YouTube for Android TV and Google TV has rolled out. Previously, there were dedicated buttons for Like and Dislike above the playback progress scrubber. These buttons existed alongside other buttons like Captions, Live Chat, Save, and more. You can see an example of how that layout looked in the left image below.

Apple is (momentarily) no longer the second-biggest smartphone maker

    0
    • Xiaomi moved more smartphone volume over the month of August than Apple, with only Samsung shipping more.
    • This marks the first time since 2021 that Xiaomi has managed to outpace Apple.
    • Xiaomi sales are on the rise, but this is mostly a consequence of Apple sales slumping ahead of its latest launch.

When you’re a smartphone user in the West, it’s easy to fall into the trap where the market starts looking like Samsung vs Apple, and everything else is a distraction at best. Of course, the actual landscape is far more varied and interesting than just that, and even with lots of upheaval as manufacturers come and go, there are still plenty of other major brands selling phones — and in some cases, a lot of phones.

Xiaomi is one of those players where you’ve probably heard its name quite a bit, but may not have a great sense for just how big it is on the international smartphone market. To simply acknowledge its bigness risks understatement, but now we have one very clear way to put it: Last month, Xiaomi sold more smartphones than Apple.

Google Messages might make it easy to juggle multiple accounts (APK teardown)

    0
    • Google Messages appears to be working on a way to indicate the profile being used to send messages.
    • The app is also expanding its profile management tools, suggesting this is all part of a broader effort.
    • This functionality may be part of in-development dual-SIM support.

Now that iOS 18 is out, many iPhone users are getting their first taste of RCS. For Android fans, that just means a whole lot of new people to start engaging with using the full set of RCS features in Messages. Today we’re checking out one way Google’s been working on improving Messages that could be handy for users with multiple accounts or who work with multiple SIMs.

We’re looking at version messages.android_20240916_01_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic of the Messages app, where we’re able to access some early work towards a UI that displays a new “Sending as…” indicator reflecting the Google account you’re currently signed into Messages with. So far we’ve only been able to activate this message when engaging with a group chat, and haven’t seen any kind of similar text with one-on-one conversations.

Pixel 10 codenames point to another four phones next year

    0
    • Codenames have arrived for the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
    • All the upcoming non-folding Pixels share names referencing different breeds of horses.
    • We also get new support for the Pixel 9a’s “tegu” codename.

What’s in a name? If you’re a Pixel smartphone, you know you’re going to end up as the Pixel-something-or-other, with maybe a Pro, Fold, or XL tacked on at the end, but that’s not how your life began. Long before the spotlights fire up at a Made by Google event, and months before hardware starts making it to retailer shelves, Pixel phones begin with a codename. Today we’re checking out how the next generation of Pixel phones is taking shape, and what those codenames could possibly be.

Looking forward out onto the Pixel horizon, the next launch on our radar is likely to be the Pixel 9a next spring. We already connected that phone to the codename “tegu,” which picks up additional confirmation from a new report by AndroidHeadlines. But in addition to the Pixel 9a, the site also reveals potential codenames for the whole Pixel 10 family.
